DECEMBER 8, 2019 NOTES FROM THE PASTOR Twentyfive years ago, journalist John Fr. Mark Brauer, Pastor Fialka brought to public consciousness the profound deficit in retirement funding Fr. Paul Graney among religious institutes. His front page Associate Pastor Wall Street Journal article added new urgency to a movement already Fr. Derik Peterman underway to address the crisis. Two Associate Pastor years later, bishops in the United States launched the Retirement Fund for Religious. OUR VISION The following are facts as to why they need our help: To know Christ and For most of their lives, elder religious worked for little to no pay. There were no 401(k) plans or pensions. to make Christ known The funding shortage is compounded by rising health care costs and decreased income. And, as more religious reach retirement age and leave compensated ministry, income will further decline while care needs increase. By 2029, religious past age 70 are projected to outnumber religious under age 70 by nearly three to one. Since 2009, the annual cost to support senior women and men religious has exceeded $1 billion. In 2018, 72 percent of the religious communities providing data to the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO) had a median age of 70 or higher. Our elderly Catholic sisters, brothers, religious order priests need our help. For years, these selfless women and men ministered for little, if any, compensation M educating the young, nursing the sick, promoting justice and peace. Their sacrifices now leave a substantial gap in retirement savings. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious provides vital funding for prescription medications, nursing care, and more. Please share in the care and give to those who have given a lifetime. Our Lady of Sorrows Parish has been consistently generous in supporting this important appeal. By our contributing to this fund, we join God in leveling the valleys and mountains that they now face. This year’s annual appeal is on December 7 & 8. Thank you for your care, concern, and generous support of the women and men religious who have served us well for so many decades. Peace. Fr. Mark Brauer Please sign the petition to ban Dismemberment Abortions. Representatives will be present at all doors before & after Masses this weekend. We are called to help all God’s people for such a time as this. Fr. Brauer, Fr. Graney & Fr.
