Nordic Performance Master in Folk Music 120 credits

1. Identification 1.1. Nordic Performance Master in Folk Music (KMNF1)

1.2. Decision Information Approved by the Artistic Development Board at KMH 2011-04-07. The programme syllabus takes effect from the autumn semester 2011.

1.3. Alteration Information Revised by the Education and Research Board 2020:7 (2020-11-05). The amendment takes effect from the autumn semester 2021.

2. Programme Description The study programme gives a high level of artistic skills in ensemble playing based on folk music traditions in , , and . The studies are conducted at the three Nordic higher music education institutions in Esbjerg, Helsinki and Stockholm with a final intensive period at the Ole Bull Academy in Norway. In order to prepare for the student’s future vocational career, courses with the aim of deepening the knowledge of the main instrument, ensemble playing, arranging, composition and music theory are conducted. Courses in marketing and stage performance are included as well. The student also gets the opportunity to take elective courses, and student-driven artistic projects as well as a degree project in the form of a diploma concert and concert tour are included.

3. Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding On completion of the programme, the student shall: • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the main field of study, including both broad knowledge of the field and a considerable degree of specialized knowledge in areas of the field as well as specialized insight into current trends within musical life,

• demonstrate familiarity with methods and processes for dealing with complex phenomena, issues and situations in the field.

Competence and skills On completion of the programme, the student shall: • demonstrate the ability to formulate new issues autonomously and creatively and contribute to the artistic development, solve more advanced problems, develop new forms of personal expression as well as to reflect critically on one’s own artistic approach and that of others in the main field of study, • demonstrate the ability to create and execute own artistic ideas with own developed personal expression, to identify, formulate and solve artistic and creative problems autonomously and also to plan and undertake advanced artistic tasks using appropriate methods within predetermined time frames, • demonstrate the ability both nationally and internationally to clearly present and discuss the work and artistic issues in speech, writing or in other ways and in dialogue with different audiences, • demonstrate the ability to cooperate closely with other musicians, ensembles and other partners, • demonstrate the competence and knowledge required to work autonomously in a professional capacity, • demonstrate a solid craftsmanship within the main field of study.

Judgement and approach On completion of the programme, the student shall: • demonstrate the ability to make assessments in the main field of study informed by relevant artistic, social and ethical issues, • demonstrate insight into the role of music in society, • demonstrate the ability to identify the need for further knowledge and take responsibility for ongoing learning.

4. Degree Konstnärlig masterexamen i musik 120 hp Degree of Master in Music 120 credits Students, who have completed the programme with passed grade, may apply for a degree issued in accordance with local degree regulations at KMH.

6. Previous Knowledge and Selection Criteria In order to access the study programme, the following is required: • General entry requirements for second cycle courses and study programmes. • Specific entry requirements: o Degree of Bachelor in Music, 180 credits, or corresponding qualifications. o In order to meet the entry requirements, you need to pass the entrance examination test LS 23.4 (Main Subject, Nordic Performance Master, Folk Music, Part 1) as well as pass the following entrance examination tests, which are also the basis for your ranking: LS 23.5 (Main Subject, Nordic Performance Master, Folk Music, Part 2) and LS 23.6 (Main Subject, Nordic Performance Master, Folk Music, Part 3).

7. Other Information The study programme is a collaboration between Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (FI), Danish National Academy of Music, Esbjerg (DK), Ole Bull Academy, Voss (NO) and KMH. The study programme ends with a joint diploma concert and concert tour.
