STUBAIER HÖHENWEG TRAIL STAGES Fantastic High-Alpine Hiking Experience in the Alps

Hiking through lush green pastures, surrounded by awe-inspiring summits, listening to the murmuring of brooks, taking deep breaths of clear mountain air and enjoying the nature along the Stubai Höhenweg Trail: This is a holiday for body, spirit and soul! The tour along the Stubai Höhenweg is a hut-to-hut trek; from high pastures to the cragged limestone rock formations of the Kalkkögel Mountains – from crystal-clear mountain lakes to the icy glacier giants. The Stubai Höhenweg Trail is a multi-day circuit hike along the impressive moun - tain ridges at the back of Stubai Valley. Without entering the glacier, this multi-day tour crosses climatic borders and leads along flowering mountain pastures to mostly well-equipped Alpine Club huts, where one can recharge with the regional culinary delights offered there. The circuit hike starts and ends in Neustift. It is possible to return to Neustift from seven of the eight overnight spots. This way the trail can also be conquered in several stages. Impressive glacial paths, 3,000m-high mountains or classic glacier tours invite to enjoy unforgettable mountain experiences. The Stubai Höhenweg is a high-altitude trail, all sections of which lead through alpine and high-alpine terrain. Some sections are secured by steel cables and steps. The mountains surrounding Franz-Senn-Hut and Regensburger Hut have been mostly formed by alpine granite. The summits and ridges are cragged and especially suitable for climbing. A good head for heights and surefootedness are essential. On the Stubai Höhenweg Trail one can experience the diversity of alpine land - scapes in a small area and this makes it quite unique.

ASCENT TO STARKENBURGER HUT Alternative 1: Gondola from Fulpmes After the uphill ride with the Kreuzjoch gondola to the Schlick 2000 top terminal the hut can be easily reached in a 1.5 to 2-hour hike.

Alternative 2: By foot from Neustift From Neustift (1,200m of altitude gain, steepest ascent), from Neder or from the Schlick 2000 base terminal in Fulpmes. All ascents take approximately 3.5 to 4 hours 11

FROM STARKENBURGER HUT TO FRANZ-SENN-HUT approx. 7 hours, | 440m of altitude gain « 530m of altitude loss Follow the signposts for “Seejöchl” and “Franz-Senn-Hütte” across the south-western slope of the foothills of Hoher Burgstall Mountain to Blachnsattel. Across the extremely rocky and stony terrain below the Kalkkögel Mountains to Seejöchl (2,225m). Continue to Senders - jöchl above Schlicker See Lake. From there steeply downhill in serpentines on the southern slope to Rote Wand face (some sections are secured by ropes), then on the same altitude level, later on slightly descending to Hochalm Hut. From there continue to Hohe Schöne and take the brief, very steep descent into Viller Grube. Brief ascent to Stei - niger that is secured by steel cables in some sections. The trail then crosses the south-eastern slopes of central Oberbergtal Valley. Finally a brief descent leads to Franz-Senn-Hut.

FROM FRANZ-SENN-HUT TO NEUE REGENSBURGER HUT approx. 4 hours, | 650m of altitude gain « 500m of altitude loss This crossing is one of the shortest and easiest sections of the Stubai Höhenweg Trail. The view of the Stubai main ridge that can be enjoyed from Basslerjoch is unequalled. From the hut the route continues almost on level terrain into the “Kuhgeschwetz”. There the ascent to Schrimmennieder starts. Across the first escarpment you get to “Unnütze Grübel” and after another brief ascent on a distinct ridge. Now the tour continues on slightly descending terrain into Obere Platzengrube. Follow it to its eastern edge. On some steep serpentines you make quite a few metres of altitude gain; then a long crossing to the right to Schrimmennieder follows. From Schrimmennieder the trail continues in many bends downhill to the trail that leads from Milde - raunalm Hut to Neue Regensburger Hut. Follow the almost level trail into the valley and to the hut. 12 STUBAI VALLEY Stubaier Höhenweg Trail Stages

FROM NEUE REGENSBURGER HUT TO DESDNER HUT approx. 6 hours, | 900m of altitude gain « 850m of altitude loss From the hut you follow Hohe Moos into the valley and continue then on the ascending trail towards Falbesoner See Lake. Before your get to the lake the trail crosses the valley below Hochmoosferner glacier and leads to the steep ascent to Grawagrubennieder (2.5 hours from Neue Regensburger Hut). From Grawagrubennnieder you pass below the tongue of Grawandferner glacier and cross steep and rocky slopes. Pass below Mutterberger See Lake. Now you continue slightly descending to the bottom of Glamergrube, ascend on the other side across Wilde Grube to get on top of a saddle and then down to Dresdner Hut.

FROM DRESDNER HUT TO SULZENAU HUT approx. 2.5 hours, | 400m of altitude gain « 500m of altitude loss From the hut to the mid-terminal of the Stubai Gletscherbahn lift. Across a bridge behind the building; cross Fernaubach Brook and ascend across screes to the Trögler/ Peiljoch junction. Experienced mountaineers can climb Trögler Mountain (approx. 2 hours); serpentines lead to the summit and the descent down to Sulzenau - hütte Hut takes about one hour (watch out: secured by rope). This is not recommended in wet weather or in snow conditions. The trail across Peiljoch is steep, yet well secured by ropes (approx. 1.5 hours). The descent on serpentines to Sulzenau Hut and the follwing crossing of the moraine of Sulzenau glacier takes approx. 1 hour.

FROM SULZENAU HUT TO NÜRNBERGER HUT approx. 3.5 hours, | 650m of altitude gain « 550m of altitude loss The trail leads across several brooks in eastern direction and up to Grünausee Lake, the biggest lake of the and a picture-book resting place. Refreshed you continue uphill in north-eastern direction and pass another few crystal-clear mountain lakes. In good and safe weather you should climb Mairspitze Summit. From up there you enjoy great views of many sections of the Stubai Höhenweg Trail. Otherwise you can take the shortcut past Niederl. There are steel cables to secure the descent to Nürnberger Hut. Another alternative is the tour across Gamsspitzl Summit (3,050m). For this option you have to cross a steep snow field that persists often into August. 13

FROM NÜRNBERGER HUT TO BREMER HUT approx. 4 hours, | 600m of altitude gain « 450m of altitude loss On this stage you can see in an impressive way how the glacier has shaped the landscape and the stone formations. Form Nürnberger Hut you hike across extensive slabs marked by glacial striations until the trails leads down to Langetalbach Brook. On the other side of the val - ley the trail leads out of the valley and up the slabs into the so-called “Paradise”. From there you continue uphill to the 2.754m-high Zoll - hütte Hut at Simmingjöchl, from where you climb down to Bremer Hut.

FROM BREMER HUT TO INNSBRUCKER HUT approx. 7 hours, | 800m of altitude gain « 850m of altitude loss For experienced hikers and in good weather: trail downhill through a short chimney above Lauterer See Lake that is well-secured by rope and steps. For less experienced hikers: regular trail with descent below the material ropeway. Both trails up Drauljöchl start off slightly ascen - ding and get then steeper. Descend across boulders and cross the big Draulgrube depression. Afterwards rope-secured ascent across Wasen - wand Face (attention!) to Pramarspitze Summit. Continue through Glättegrube to get to the last ascent on the other side of the depression up Sendesgrat Ridge. Continue slightly downhill in the foot - hills of Habich Mountain and hike past Afaier See Lake to Innsbrucker Hut.

DESCENT FROM INNSBRUCKER HUT Alternative 1: Through Pinnistal Valley to Neder In takes approximately 1 hour to get from Innsbrucker Hut to Karalm. From there you can take a taxi back to the valley or hike through Pinnistal Valley to Neder (approx. 2 hours). Alternative 2: Take the gondola back to Neustift from the Elferlift top terminal. In takes approximately 1 hour to get from Innsbrucker Hut to Karalm. From there it is another 20-minute hike to Pinnisalm pasture. From the pasture a slightly ascending trail takes you to the Elferlifte top teriminal in one hour. Take the gondola back to Neustift. The panorama brochure of the Stubai Höhenweg Trail is available in every hut and in the office of the Stubai Tirol Tourist Board. FRANZ-SENN-TRAIL In the Footsteps of a Tourism Pioneer

Franz Senn was the priest of the municipality of Neustift from 1881 to 1884. The name of the priest, mountain guide and host Franz Senn is inseparably linked to the opening of the Alps for tourists. Franz Senn is also said to be the founder of the German Alpine Club. With the making and building of trails and huts, his efforts were dedi - cated to making high alpine areas accessible to humans and to get them into hiking in the mountains. Franz Senn thus also started the development of Stubai Valley for tourism. Starting point of the new Franz-Senn-Trail are the sights around the church of Neustift, the grave, the Franz Senn monument or the mural painting of the glacier priest. The circuit trail that is also accessible for prams leads from Neustift to Lehner Eben to the biomass power sta - tion in Auten. Interactive and artistically designed stations, like the

Above Milders the trail leads past the Eismandl fountain and back to Neustift. In Milders is the starting point of the alpine version of the trail that leads into Oberbergtal Valley. This trail section leads along the old ascent directly to Franz-Senn-Hut at 2.140m. Hikers follow the old paths that were already taken by Franz Senn and his followers. The alpine trail leads along the sunny side of Oberbergtal Valley. Follow the signposts for Sonnenweg Trail to get to Oberiss Alm. From there you get to Franz-Senn-Hut in approx. 1.5 hours.

: o t o F ELFER PANORAMA TRAIL

A fantastic mountain hike into the wild-romantic Pinnistal Valley amidst impressive mountain scenery.

Elfer Top Terminal – Elferhütte Hut - Karalm Walking time: 2.5 hours

The marked trail leads in many hair-pin bends from the top terminal of Elferbahn lift up to Elferhütte Hut. Shortly above the hut the Panorama Trail takes a right turn into the western slope of Pinnistal Valley. The trail ascends for some time and follows then the same altitude level for a longer while. From this route one enjoys a fantastic panoramic view of the wild-romantic Pinnistal Valley and the majestic mountain ridge of Habicht Mountain. In early summer one can admire blooming alpine roses along this hike. From an altitude of approx. 2,000m one descends into the wide, green Gratzengrübl in south-western direction and from there the path continues quite steep into the bottom of the valley to Karalm pasture. To get back into the valley you can take a pasture taxi or continue your hike to Pinnisalm pasture and back to the top terminal of Elfer lift (approx. 1.5-hour walk). It takes about 2 hours to hike along the forestry trail through Pinnistal Valley to Neder. 30 NEUSTIFT Contemplation Trail / Map page 28

7 STATIONS TO PAUSE In the Honour of God, to the Delight of the People

The priest of Neustift, Eduard Niederwieser, initiated the creation of a contemplative trail. It took two years to build the 5km-long trail without the help of technical aids. Seven artistic sculptures by the Neustift artists Hansjörg Ranalter and Gotthard Obholzer invite to reflect on the themes of the sculptures and the bible quotes. A song on Creation from the Book of Daniel, Old Testament leads through the trail.

The signpost at the junction of the Stubaitalstraße to the hamlet of Neder is a bronze sculpture by the Neustift sculptor Gotthard Obholzer. The Besinnungsweg contemplative trail starts above of Neder on the forestry trail at the entrance of Pinnistal Valley. A fire column made of colourful Kramsach marble marks the beginning. The trail with steps leads up into the forest. The trail features seven stations with more- than-man-sized sculptures and inscribed tablets. The Besinnungweg Trail ends in a clearing with an octagonal marble statue near Issenan - geralm pasture.

From there a path leads to the idyllically located Issenanger Alm. Numerous benches along the contemplative trail invite to sit down, experience nature, take deep breaths, enjoy great views and reflect on the inscribed tablets and the artistic stations. It takes two to three hours to cover Besinnungsweg Trail. On the way back it is possible to take the forestry trail through Pinnistal Valley. STUBAITAL Neustift/Pinnistal Valley NEUSTIFT 31

KAPELLENWEG TRAIL to the spring of Maria Waldrast & Gleins Upland Moor

VILLAGE OF MIEDERS - KOPPENECK – MARIA WALDRAST // WALKING TIME: 3 HOURS

Kapellenweg Trail starts at the village fountain of Mieders and leads towards Schmelzgasse uphill before it takes left turn at the first way - side shrine. The trail continues to a junction. There one follows the singposts and continues on the wide forestry trail until one is just below Koppeneck (possible to take Serlesbahn lift uphill). The the trail continues quite even to Maria Waldrast. Along the Kapellenweg Trail, an old pilgrimage route, one can visit 15 small chapels dating back to the 18th century and featuring colourful paintings. The easy and pram-accessible trail is especially popular among families and the elderly. The high-energy water from the Kneipp facility of the Waldrast spring is said to have healing powers.

MARIA WALDRAST - GLEINSER HOCHMOOR – GLEINSER HÖFE // WALKING TIME: 1.5 HOURS

From the Maria Waldrast car park the hiking trail leads slightly uphill towards Gleins and Gleinser Mähder to the Gleinser Hochmoor upland moor, where you get to the so-called “Eulenwiesen” pastures. The “Eulenwiesen” are hidden mountain meadows amidst a larch wood – an idyllic place with an especially peaceful atmosphere. In fall time the coloured larch trees show their most beautiful side. Traditional hay barns along the trail invite to spend a break. From there it is not far to Gleinser Höfe, from where one enjoys a beautiful view of the Stubai Valley and the Kalkkögel Mountains of the Schlick. From the end of June onwards free guided upland moor hikes take place on Mondays. 42 STUBAI Hiking Badge

WILDEWASSERWEG TRAIL

TSCHANGELAIRALM – SULZENAUHÜTTE HUT 3.5hrs | 5.5km | 803m of altitude gain Schoaßen, Lehner and Gissen (goat meadows, avalanche deposits and mudslides) The hiking trail starts immediately at the right bank of Brook and leads into the valley. The surrounding area has been formed by avalanches and mudslides and its vegetation has adapted to the conditions: berrybushes and birch trees that have been forced down into the valley, interspersed with thin lines of spruce trees.

GRAWA WATERFALL The waterfall and heart piece of the WildeWasserWeg Trail After a bend a clear view of the impressive Grawa Waterfall, the widest waterfall of the East Alps is revealed. Two vantage points – one at the same height as a tubulent water cushion, the second immediately above the the exposed edge – bring us close to the nature spectacle.

SULZENAU-ALM Two entirely different “trail philosophies” The steep hairpin bends enable us to experience the old pasture trail: direct, steep, straightforward. The wide basin has been shaped by the element of water: It features three waterfalls and an abundance of meandering brooks. From the idyllically located pasture hut the trail follows close to the foot of the most majestic of the three waterfalls and leads up to Sulzenauhütte Hut. i a b u t S

If you arrive early at Sulzenauhütte Hut, you can still undertake the rewarding hike to the Ten Lakes WildWasser Venue. With GPS (geo - caching equipment can be rented at the hut) you can easily hike from lake to lake.

SULZENAUHÜTTE HUT – DRESDNER HUT 3hrs | 5.3km | 531m of altitude gain | 425m altitude loss Pioneer landscape, hiking, where the glacier retreated only a short while ago. The trail leads across an escarpement that is torn by a gorge to Blaue Lacke, a big moraine lake. Then the trail follows the gently rising bottom of the valley, leads past gritty outwashed plains and polished glacial abrasions, always close to the roaring glacier brook, the flow of which changes every hour.

GLACIER ARENA On eye level with wildly torn seracs After a steep climb we get to the striking edge below Fererstube and Sulzenau crevasse. From there we can observe all glacial phenomenons close-by. We continue – while enjoying a fantastic view of the fissured Sulzenauferner Glacier and the Zuckerhütl – onto Peiljoch with its numerous cairns and hike then on the other side down to Dresdner Hut.

From Dresdner Hut it is easy to get to the “Stubai Haupt - kamm” WildeWasser Venue by lift. From there one can hike back to the hut. 48 WILDEWASSERWEG TRAIL / Map page 50-51 i a b u t S

DRESDNER HUT – REGENSBURGER HUT 7hrs | 12.4km | 1314m of altitude gain | 1331m of altitude loss | highest point 2,880m; A hall of mirrors; hoping for a lull in the wind This stage leads past several mountain lakes. Some folds in the land - scape are home to smaller lakes and ponds that accompany us to Egesennieder. From there we diagonally cross over to Wilde Grub’n. On the other side we cross Glamergrubenbäche brooks and get to Zunterkopf and Mutterberger See Lake (2,479m), a perfect resting place. The beautiful lake is even home to char fish.

Moors, Spring Meadows and an Object Lesson in Mountain Solitude Descending from Mutterberger See Lake the path leads past two idyllic wetlands with expanses of water, meanders and cottongrass in abun - dance; continue to Grawagrubennieder vantage point. From there one can impressively observe how Hochmoosferner Glacier has been shaping the landscape. On descending you can slide down along some last snow patches – but be careful! Glacier lakes, siltations and moors give an insight into natural processes that often cover several thousands of years.

Hohe Moos is a windswept upland moor on mammilated rocks with a very specialised vegetation that thrives in the nutritient-poor earth, the run-offs of the glacier have filled the basin with. 49

REGENSBURGER HUT – FALBESON 2hrs | 4km | 1076m altitude loss This is where it comes full circle The descent starts with narrow hairpin bends. Half-way down one can make a detour to get near the two-tiered waterfall at a section where it is a bit more flattened. The trail gets less steep and leads to Falbsoner Ochsenalm (1,810m). From the pasture we follow the forestry trail and leave it then shortly after the first bend. Numeorus steep hairpin bends lead down into the valley basin of Falbeson.

Day Stages The trail can be either conquered as a whole or divided into several day excursions or shorter tours, the starting points of which are at the road and easily accessible by car or bus. These routes are less challeng- ing and are also suitable for children. From Grawa Alm (1,530m) to Grawa Waterfall, on its left bank past the two vantage points up to Sulzenau Alm and back on the old pasture trail – 2 hours. From Mutterberg Alm by lift to the mid-terminal (2,300m), across Peil - joch to the Glacier Arena and past Sulzenauhütte and Sulzenau Alm back to the base station – 4.5 hours. From Mutterberg Alm by lift to the mid-terminal (2,300m), past Egesennieder to Mutterberger See Lake, across the Ruderhofbäche Brooks and along the Mutterberger Kaskade back to the starting point – 3 hours. i a b u t S

Two hiking trails lead to the vantage platform at eye level with the waterfall. One starts in the of Gasteig, the second one in the district of Volderau and on both of them it takes approx. 45 minutes to get there.

The “Höllenrachen” is a gorge that is approximately 20 minutes into the valley from Franz-Senn-Hut, the result of abrasion by Alpeiner Bach Brook over the centuries. Experienced via ferrata climbers can conquer the gorge with suitable equipment on the spectacular via ferrata, some sections of which are underground. Hikers using the regular trail can also enjoy breath-taking views of the narrow gorge. Alpeiner Ferner is the historically most important glacier of the Stubai Alps. Old depictions tell of its former dimension, when its tongue was approx. 80m high and reached to an area only a few hundred metres behind Höllenrachen gorge. It completely filled the moraine bed that can still be seen today. Already in middle of the 19th century the glacier was systematically measured and since approx. 1835 the tongue has started to melt away and since approx. 1850 it has continiously retreated.

Easy, comfortable hiking trail – also suitable for children. 54 WILDEWASSER VENUES / Map page 56-57 i a b u t S

TEN LAKES From Sulzenauhütte Hut the trail leads slightly ascending towards Nürnberger Hut and to Grünausee Lake (2,330m), a beautifully colou - red moraine lake that reflects Wilde Freiger Mountain. From there you continue to Schafgrüebl. This flat calderal features another nine mountain lakes and ponds that are easy to find with the map. At each lake is a geocache point; you can hike from lake to lake with a GPS device (equipment rental at the hut).

DRESDNER HUT LOOP TRAIL In close cooperation with the Dresden Section of the German Alpine Club a loop trail was built in summer 2008. Starting from Desdner Hut the trail leads past small lakes and ponds on a plateau from where one enjoys a fantastic view of the glacier and the summits. Down the slope one gets to the glacier brook. One can easily notice and also experience how the power of the water has shaped the landscape here. The trail now continues to the place where the glacier brook flows into Fernaubach Brook and returns then to Dresdner Hut. 55

TOP OF TYROL SUMMIT PLATFORM

Another WildeWasser venue is especially easy to get to: A ride with the Stubai Gletscherbahn lift to the Schaufeljch top terminal and a 10- minute hike bring you to the new summit platform at Große Isidor. This WildeWasser venue offers a spectacular view of the majestic glaciers.

Below the platform one can see the water divide between Stubai Valley and Ötztal Valley. Snowflakes that fall to the left and the right of this divide, meet again near Innsbruck. Snowflakes that fall down at Wilder Pfaff on the other hand, unite only in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul.

On the hike from the platform down to the valley one can experience glacier phenomena at close hand that are usually reserved to moun - taineers. Crevasses are the result of the moving ice masses. Big moraine ridges remind of the enormous dimensions the alpine glaciers had not too long ago.

DIVE INTO THE ETERNAL ICE The Stubai Glacier stands for royal skiing, varied pistes, snow from October to June and for family-friendliness. At the Stubai Glaicer, the biggest glacier ski area of , the TOP OF TYROL summit platform hovers at 3.210m of altitude. From the summit platform one enjoys an incredible view far into the surrounding mountains. Free information hours give an insight into the world of glaciers. 20 tons of steel were assembled down in the valley, flewn onto the mountain with helicopters and anchored in the rock. The platform covers 80m² and juts out beyond the rock face by 9 metres. From the summit platform a 20-minute hike brings you to Joch - dohle, Austria’s biggest mountain restaurant. It nestles in the foothills of Schaufelspitze Summit and invites to stay. From Jochdohle restau - rant the glacier path leads down to the Eisgrat top terminal. Where in the winter skiers wedel across the slopes, hikers walks across the eternal ice in the summer months.

Stubai Glacier visitors have the opportunity to cast a breathtaking glance inside a glacier. A new 130 metre long ice grotto leads right through the middle of the glacial ice close to the Eisgrat station at an altitude of 2.900 metres. Special skills are not necessary, but certainly sturdy shoes and a warm jacket, since the temperatures in the ice grotto are also below zero degrees Celsius at the height of summer. 60 E-BIKE
