From the Desk of Superintendent Jenny FROM THE DESK OF SUPERINTENDENT JENNY STARCK November, 2020 This has been a year of planning and adjusting plans. The community and parents spoke clearly that face to face instruction for all students was the preferred delivery meth- od. Although we have had to take a two-week switch to virtual instruction, we will still work within the goal of face to face with students as much as possible. We have increased cleaning protocols especially in bathrooms and areas of higher traffic. The elementary school is able to keep students in grade level class cohorts which helps as there are posi- tive cases identified. We have developed a weekly dashboard on the COVID - 19 banner of the website where we update the numbers of students and staff in quarantine or test- ing positive. STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE School District of Cadott The current school district Strategic Plan will expire in June 2021. The school Community 426 Myrtle Street board has been working with Howick Associates to develop a template for a new, multi- Cadott, WI 54727 715-289-3795 year plan that will be shared with the community for feedback in the spring. This multi- www.cadott.k12.wi.us year plan is developed into an annual scorecard that has annual goals and strategic ac- tions around continuous improvement methods. The district has used this process for several years and continues to see gains in the areas of focus. RESEARCH TO PRACTICE INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES The Cadott School District was fortunate to receive a grant from the Department of Public Instruction that will focus on improving academic results for students with disabili- ties and students in poverty. This includes research-based instructional strategies and fur- ther development of Professional Learning Communities with our staff. More information is available on the link on our website. FREE BREAKFAST & LUNCH EXTENDED THROUGH THE END OF THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR We have been informed that the USDA has extended the free meal program through the end of the school year. This means that all students who eat breakfast and/or lunch will be counted, but will not be charged for up to 1 BUSINESS NAME breakfast and 1 lunch per day. This applies to all students age 18 and younger. Reminder: If a student choses to only take milk, but no meal, there will be a charge of $.40 applied to the student’s lunch account. For parents who have children who are taking classes from home-you are eligible to pick up a breakfast/lunch meal for your child each day. Please contact Karita Harvey at 715-289-3795 Ext. 18000 or [email protected] for more information. By: Terri Goettl, Elementary Principal In the midst of a global pandemic the elementary is thriving! Students' Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Skills are improving! Comparing our SEL data from the fall of 2018, 2019, and 2020, the percent of students with typical/ strength SEL skills have consistently increased from 87%, to 91%, to 92% respectively using the Devereux Stu- dent Strengths Assessment (DESSA). The DESSA measures: Self Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, Goal- Directed Behavior, Personal Responsibility, Decision Making, and Optimistic Thinking. These are key protective factors that support academic success. -Research shows that classrooms function more effectively and student learning increases when chil- dren have the skills to focus their attention, manage negative emotions, navigate relationships with peers and adults, and persist in the face of difficulty (e.g., Ladd, Birch & Buhs, 1999; Raver, 2002). -Children who are able to effectively manage their thinking, attention, and behavior are also more likely to have better grades and higher standardized test scores (Blair & Razza, 2007; Bull et al., 2008; Epsy et al., 2004; Howse, Lange et al., 2003; McClelland et al., 2007; Ponitz et al., 2008), -Children with strong social skills are more likely to make and sustain friendships, initiate positive rela- tionships with teachers, participate in classroom activities, and be positively engaged in learning (Denham, 2006). Social and emotional skills also serve as important protective factors in the face of negative life events or chronic stressors (Buckner, Mezzacappa & Beardslee, 2003; 2009) Social and emotional skills support general wellbeing, such as job and financial security as well as phys- ical and mental health, through adulthood (Mischel et al., 1989; Moffitt et al., 2011; Jones, Greenberg & Crow- ley, 2015). Now more than ever, a focus on student mental health and social and emotional skills is needed to continue to excel during these challenging times. Keep up the amazing work Cadott Elementary Students and Staff! ANNUAL ASBESTOS NOTICE In compliance with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), this is notice that the Cadott Community School District has an Asbes- tos Management Plan at the school district office. The plan is available for inspection by the public, par- ents, and district employees.
