Long Island Geobibliography Project March 2010 Long Island Geobibliography Project March 2010 Project Supervisor: Dr. Gilbert Hanson Project Staff: Students of the Geosciences Department Project Coordinator and Library Liaison: Cynthia Dietz Library Staff Editor: Yuet Tran Long Island Geobibliography Project The Long Island Geobibliography is a bibliography of publications relating to Long Island geology. It was produced by students of the Geosciences Dept. under the Supervision of Professor Gilbert Hanson, and maintained in EndNote by Melville Library. It was reformatted recently for DSpace. The DSpace report displays fields thought most important for searching and browsing, including: Author, Title, Year Published, Subject Phrase, Keywords, Holding Location, Call Number and Journal/Publication. A number of other fields are available from a MS Excel file (LIGeobiblio2010Edited.xls), including: Edition, Material Type, Abstract, Notes, Volume, Page Number, ISBN, ISSN, URL and Contact Information. RecordNo is the field the user may use to identify matches between the DSpace record and the associated Excel file row. The Excel file’s second worksheet contains a subject thesaurus of more than 760 subject phrases. A phrase, when used in a search, may help the user locate a reference to a work within the bibliography. Sykes, John G. Armbruster, Won-Young Kim, and Leonardo Seeber Abstract A catalog of 383 earthquakes in southeastern New York, southwestern Connecticut, northern New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania, including metropolitan New York City and Philadelphia, is compiled from historical and instrumental data from 1677 through 2006. A magnitude-felt area relationship is used to calculate the equivalent magnitude mbLg prior to the advent of abundant instrumental data in 1974. Revised locations are computed for a number of historic earthquakes. Most hypo- centers are concentrated in older terranes bordering the Mesozoic Newark basin in the Reading, Manhattan, and Trenton prongs and in similar rocks found at a shallow depth beneath the coastal plain from south of New York City across central New Jersey. Historic shocks of mbLg 3 and larger were most numerous in the latter zone. The largest known event, mbLg 5.25, occurred just offshore of New York City in 1884. Many earthquakes have occurred beneath the 12-km wide Ramapo seismic zone (RSZ) in the eastern part of the Reading prong, where station coverage was the most ex- tensive since 1974. The southeastern boundary of the RSZ, which is nearly vertical, extends from near the surface trace of the Mesozoic Ramapo fault to depths of 12–15 km. Because the Mesozoic border fault dips about 50°–60° southeast, earth- quakes of the RSZ are occurring within middle Proterozoic through early Paleozoic rocks.

Stone Ridge, NY 12484 INTRODUCTION: EARTHQUAKES IN THE NORTHEASTERN UNITED STATES Although the area within a 100 km radius of New York City is clearly not as seismically active as most areas near plate boundaries, this area has had its share of moderate earthquake activity. For most earthquakes in the interior of the North American plate--unlike the situation along plate boundaries--it is not clear whether geologic faults mapped at the surface are the faults along which the earthquakes are occurring. The purpose of this field trip is to examine several geologic features in the greater New York City (NYC) area that might be related to earthquake activity. As we proceed, the following question will be addressed: Are seismically active fa ults in the NYC area delineated by geological fe atures that are observable at the earth 's surface? To understand earthquake phenomena in the NYC area, it is helpful to picture this area in the context of earthquake activity throughout the northeastern United States (NEUS). The NEUS has one of the longest records of reported earthquake activity in North America (Fig. 1). Earthquake activity was noticed in this region by early European settlers, and as the population density grew, an increasing number of earthquakes were reported.

HAZARD PROFILE This section provides profile information including description, extent, location, previous occurrences and losses and the probability of future occurrences. Description An earthquake is the sudden movement of the Earth’s surface caused by the release of stress accumulated within or along the edge of the Earth’s tectonic plates, a volcanic eruption or by a manmade explosion (FEMA, 2001; Shedlock and Pakiser, 1997). Most earthquakes occur at the boundaries where the Earth’s tectonic plates meet (faults); however, less than 10 percent of earthquakes occur within plate interiors. New Jersey is in an area where plate interior-related earthquakes occur. As plates continue to move and plate boundaries change over geologic time, weakened boundary regions become part of the interiors of the plates. These zones of weakness within the continents can cause earthquakes in response to stresses that originate at the edges of the plate or in the deeper crust (Shedlock and Pakiser, 1997). The location of an earthquake is commonly described by its focal depth and the geographic position of its epicenter. The focal depth of an earthquake is the depth from the Earth’s surface to the region where an earthquake’s energy originates (the focus or hypocenter). The epicenter of an earthquake is the point on the Earth’s surface directly above the hypocenter (Shedlock and Pakiser, 1997). Earthquakes usually occur without warning and their effects can impact areas of great distance from the epicenter (FEMA, 2001).
