Vaccination (smallpox): December 31, 1852.

1874 October 23 – Birth of son Edvard in Oppdal. Age: 22 According to the 1875 Census (in ), Edvard was born in Oppdal parish. Of course, the interesting (and unknown) story here is why was Edvard’s mother, Andrea Jonsdatter Øien – a woman whose family resided in Orkdal – living in Oppdal? She must have been in Oppdal since at least February, 1874, and given that travel during late winter was challenging in those days, she had probably been in Oppdal since summer or fall 1873.

Shortly after Edvard’s birth, the nascent family of Peder, Andrea, and Edvard traveled to Orkdal, where Edvard was baptized on November 28.

One possibility, in the late 1800s there was an Øien farm near where Oppdal Station exists today, and another farm on the south side of River Driva, about 9 miles (14 km) west of Oppdal. Maybe these folk were relatives of the Øiens in Orkdal, and Andrea had traveled to Oppdal for an extended stay? She would have been about 27 years old (certainly not a naive young girl), but the marriage register lists her as “Pige”, implying that she had not been previously married.

Peder Eriksen Rønningen January 21, 2021 Revision 0.12 8

On close inspection, the structures in these two pictures appear to be the same – placement and panes in windows, position and slant of timbers in the front walls (and although many houses in the area were built with a similar layout and appearance, the slanted flue pipe on the roof would probably be unique). If this is the case, then the lower picture which appears to have a train in the background, means that this house must have been located between the Gamle Kongeveld highway and railroad tracks (close to where E6 is now). This would place it closer to the Halset farm

Above photograph and typewritten note is from Inga Groset’s photo album. Obviously “mid-1940’s” date is wrong. The note was probably typed a number of years after the actual event.

Sundalen, Romsdal (now Sunndal, Møre og Romsdal), Norway

The Old Norse form of the name was Sunndalr. The first element is sunnr which means "southern" and the last element is dalr which means "valley" or "dale". Before 1870, the name was written Sunddalen (or Sunndalen); during the period from 1870– 1917, it was spelled Sundalen; and since 1918, it has been spelled Sunndal. Green circle is the location of Hov church. Red circle is the location of the Furu gard.

Sundalen is where the River Driva meets Sunndal Fjord; about 35 miles west of Oppdal.

First, John and Marie obtained permission to leave Oppdal. They most likely traveled by foot or carriage from Oppdal to Storen, and from there by train to (the railroad didn’t reach Oppdal until 1921). In Trondheim, one could purchase a travel “package” for transport to the United States (possibly all the way to Chicago). They boarded a ship which sailed to Hull, England, then traveled by train to Liverpool. They got off the train at Liverpool then boarded the steamship Victorian. The ship may have stopped briefly in Ireland, and then continued across the North Atlantic Ocean. The ship sailed past Newfoundland and into the Gulf of St Lawrence,

Peder Eriksen Rønningen January 21, 2021 Revision 0.12 19 then up the St. Lawrence River to Quebec City in Canada. They disembarked and immediately boarded a train for the 110 mile to St. Albans, Vermont. This is where they went through US customs. The train continued from there south to Albany, New York, then another train from there to Chicago. Yet another train on the Great Northern Railway took them from Chicago to Minneapolis, Fargo, Minot, Havre, Spokane, and finally Seattle. 1925 April – Return to Norway John and Inga returned to Norway with daughter Agnes. In 1932, John wrote about this... In 1919 I had to go to Chicago and make some improvement on the machine I had sold Consolidated Wafer Co. In a short while the machine was producing twice as much from a barrel of flour and saved 50% gas. I worked there for 6 years but then I and my family went to Norway to stay. I bought some machines and started a shop close to Oppdal Train Station with the intent of making motor scooters. But I found the conditions very bad. I ordered machines from Trondheim for 10,000 kroner, but had to wait six months for delivery. I finally got them but they were the wrong kind, so I had to send them back. Peder Eriksen Rønningen January 21, 2021 Revision 0.12 26 1903 April 23 – Immigration to USA Departed Liverpool, England on April 14 aboard the SS Aurania. Gustav arrived in New York, New York, USA in 1903, with a final stated destination of Seattle, Washington to “Visit Mr. Ole Groseth, cousin, at his home in Seattle, Washington”. The 1905 ship manifest of Gustav’s brother John’s arrival indicates that he is going to join Gustav in Arlington, Washington (just north of Seattle). Based on a 1906 picture of Gustav in Alaska, Gustav’s “visit” was somewhat long. However, he did return to Norway at some later date (because there is another ship’s manifest in 1910 listing Gustav).

This 1903 manifest is “interesting” because the last name of the person immediately above Gustav on the list – it is “Bjerkaas”, very similar to the last name of Bertha Bjornaas, the woman who becomes his wife in 1921. Coincidence? However, the Trondhiem Emigration register shows the destination of Edvard Olsen Bjerkaas (b: 1884) as Irene, South Dakota, as does the ship’s register (although harder to read/decipher).

Image: http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=7488&iid=NYT715_346-0256

There is person named Edvard Olsen Bjerkaas recorded in the Oppdal church baptism records, born November 16, 1884 . However, there is no daughter listed of the same father (Ole Halvorsen b:1855) or mother (Anne Hansdatter b:1850).

Image: http://interactive.ancestry.com/1629/31198_129766-00074/7100273 This index, which lists the date of “Declaration of Intention” and “Final Entry of Admission”, doesn’t record the “Final” date for Gustav, which is consistent with Gustav’s return to Norway.

Technically, at this time Bertha’s surname is Bjornaas (1888–1977). Presumably Bertha is in the center, and Gustav (John’s brother and Bertha’s future husband) is snapping the picture. Date unknown (but must be between 1918 and mid-1919). John and Inga moved to Chicago in 1919, and there is no evidence that they attended Gustav and Bertha’s wedding in 1921).

With some effort it may be possible to identify the newspaper which was used as the “tablecloth”. The page showing at the bottom left may be the bottom of a front page (speculation based on what appears to be a picture of a face).

The current church building was completed in 1912, so the wedding was conducted in the original facility. http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=cybertour.cfm&fileId=8166&frame=22

Peder Eriksen Rønningen January 21, 2021 Revision 0.12 48 Immanuel Lutheran Church (Watson Vernon, 1912) 1215 Thomas Street, Seattle, Washington.

Immanuel Lutheran was founded in 1890 by 33 worshipers of Norwegian heritage. The congregation's first building was at Minor and Olive. In 1907 it purchased a lot at the corner of Thomas and Minor. In 1908 the basement of the new church was completed. Lacking funding to continue building the new church, the congregation held services in the basement for several years. In 1911 they finally managed to secure funding.

When the church building was dedicated in 1912, it had one of the largest Lutheran congregations on the Pacific Coast. Two bishops from the Norwegian State Church assisted with the dedication ceremonies.

Einar may have been traveling with a friend Ole Dorum (age 19) as they are listed consecutively on the manifest, both from Oppdal, and both destined for Seattle. Oppdal baptismal records show Ole Ingebrigtsen Dørum (born Jan 10, 1889), father Ingebrigt Olsen Dørum (b:1859), mother Marit Ingebrigtsdatter (b: 1862) The Dørum farm is west of Oppdal, a little more than half way to Festa. Ole Dørum baptism record: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi- win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=11&filnamn=oppddobt&gardpostnr=11537&merk=11537#ovre There doesn’t appear to be any blood relationship, and in the baptismal sponsors there are no recognizable names; so apparently just friends, off on an adventure to America.
