Jersey War Walks is written by local historian and author, Ian Ronayne, and published by Seaflower Books. It contains twenty walks, each covering a different part of the Island, together with maps and photos. Each walk guides the reader past a wealth of military and fortification history, explaining the background and purpose of sites visited, from the Iron Age to the Occupation. Given that 2012 is an Olympic year, there has never been a more Speaking about the book, Ian said, ‘I have grown up appropriate time to get involved in the Jersey Marathon. It’s perfect for children, charities and anyone just starting out in running. Race organisers are also looking for volunteers to help them with marshalling the race. No previous experience is required to be a volunteer marshal, which presents a fun chance for everyone to be involved in Jersey’s biggest sporting event of the year. The charitable event could not go ahead without the help of the hundreds of volunteers who give up their time each year. All volunteers get a free T-Shirt as thanks for all their efforts on the day. Have your say on health in Jersey A consultation is taking place on the future of health and social care in Jersey, and the Department of Health and Social Services would like to hear the views of St Helier residents. Jersey faces considerable challenges in the next few years over the type and level of health and social care services delivered to islanders. Under consideration is a wide range of issues, including an aging population, a growing demand for health and social care and a need to significantly invest in buildings and facilities. Now the department has issued a White Paper, which contains important proposals on direction and policy, and would like to hear what islanders think about it. There are two public meetings planned for 16 July, at St Paul's Centre during lunchtime and in the evening. Alternatively, anyone can write to The Public Consultation Office, FREEPOST JE 706, Jersey, JE1 1AF, or email [email protected]. A copy of the White Paper is available at www.gov.je/consult. The consultation closes on Friday 20 July. Town Crier-JULY2012.e$S_Governance style ideas 01/07/2012 10:58 Page 16

July2012 p17 Portrait of an artist St Helier resident for over 20 years and teacher of art for nearly 30, Mark Blanchard has created enduring and beautiful works of art in the major churches of his Parish.

When Canon Nicholas France was looking for an artist to involve in the major remodelling of the interior of St Thomas’ Church, he recalled admiring the drawings of local artist and teacher Mark Blanchard at an exhibition. During a two year period, Mark had to juggle his commitments as Head of Art at De La Salle College with the demands of creating both paintings and sculptures in time for the 2005 re-opening of the church. Then it was the turn of the ‘Town Church’ which has been undergoing a major renovation of both its exterior and interior fabric over the last few years: the relocation of the church organ meant that a new ‘St Helier Chapel’ could be created in an area that had been closed to the public, and Mark responded to an advertisement by the Dean, the Very Reverend Bob Key, who was looking for an artist to design a new stained glass window. The inspiration for the art work in the catholic church came, appropriately enough, from the name Thomas. Not only ‘doubting Thomas’, but also Thomas More are subjects, the latter’s imprisonment in the Tower of London requiring Mark to visit the place in which he was incarcerated. Sculptures were also required and Mark designed four archangels to occupy the plinths that had been vacant since the construction of the church in the mid-nineteenth century. For the Parish church of St Helier, the artist naturally drew upon the legend of the Island’s patron saint, as well as upon a personal connection with his predecessor in the De La Salle College art department, Fred Sands. Mark used a Fred Sands triptych of the life and death of St Helier as the source of his Above: Fred Sands design for the new church window. painting of St Helier As for future public art projects, Mark has Top: An Archangel submitted designs to the St Helier Roads on the walls of St Thomas’ Committee which has been seeking expressions of Top right: The new interest for a work of art to commemorate Major St Helier window Peirson, and he is also working on the design of Right: Mark’s new gates for De La Salle College. July2012 p23 St Helier Business St Helier based business Uniquely Flats was set up two years ago as Jersey’s first ‘flats only’ estate agency. When considering a identity for the new enterprise, owners Shelagh Marett and Vanessa Doublet, settled on a distinct “Wisely” owl logo, complete with vibrant pink colour scheme and “Wisely dedicated to flats” strap line. Now the business is spreading its wings and expanding into new services. St Helier business spreads its wings Uniquely Flats was set up after Vanessa was made redundant from a private bank. At the time, Shelagh was looking for a new challenge having worked for a large estate agency for five years. Having already worked together in the 1980s, both knew they were compatible, conscientious and extremely well organised, and so the partnership formed. Recognising a niche in the market for a flats only agency focused on sales and rentals, Uniquely Flats was the business. Now, with Uniquely Flats well established, Shelagh andBOB’S Vanessa MOTORCYCLE have launched Uniquely CENTRE Houses, this time with “Ollie” the owl logo, vibrant orange colour scheme and “For houses worth hooting about” strap line. ‘We felt that the time was right for us to branch out into the house sales and rentals market,’ said Vanessa, ‘and we are looking forward to the months ahead”. They have been joined by negotiator Sharon Fitzpatrick, who has a wealth of local experience in the Jersey property market, and is heading up the new branch of Uniquely Houses. Look out for their new car on a street near you and give them a hoot!

Myday There’s no such thing as a typical day,’ he says,’ and that’s why the job is so great. I couldn’t do the same thing day in day out. It would drive me mad. I in St Helier love being out and about in the van, the only downside is the traffic. Jonathon Hudson is an ambulance driver for the Jersey Society for the Prevention of ‘‘ Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) Animal Shelter. During his five years with the shelter, Jonathon has rescued all types of animals from all sorts of situations. ‘One of my most memorable days on the job was when I saved a peregrine chick that had fallen from its nest at the very top of St Mark’s Church spire. There are only several mating pairs of these magnificent birds on the Island, so to find a pair nesting in the heart of St Helier was fantastic. Peregrines are large birds of prey, and they are the fastest animals on the planet, so it was amazing to be able to rescue a chick and return it to its parents safely.’ But it’s a much more common bird in Jersey that takes up most of Jonathan’s time during the spring months. ‘St Helier has a huge problem with nesting seagulls,’ says Jonathon. ‘At this time of year I normally start my day with a call from someone complaining about the seagulls nesting rooftops in town, they make a hell of a lot of noise and can be on their roof,’ says Jonathon. ‘During the spring they nest on the quite vicious when they swoop down on people, so we are inundated with calls from people asking us to get rid of them.’ However, very few people realise that seagulls are protected birds which means you need a licence to remove a nest or even touch one of their eggs. ‘Our advice is always to contact a licensed pest controller, and whatever you do, don’t interfere with the chicks. If a baby chick has fallen from its nest move it out of harm’s way and leave it. Please don’t bring it to us.’ Jonathon explains that often people think they have done the right thing by bringing the chick to the shelter, ‘But more often than not we have to put the bird down as we are not allowed to raise chicks, or else we would become a Seagull sanctuary!’ Although each season tends to bring its usual problems, Jonathon loves the diversity of his job. ‘There’s no such thing as a typical day,’ he says,’ and that’s why the job is so great. I couldn’t do the same thing day in day out. It would drive me mad. I love being out and about in the van. The only downside is the traffic,’ adds Jonathon. ‘ I always panic when I get a call first thing in the morning to attend an emergency as I inevitably pull out the driveway and just sit in traffic for what seems like a lifetime. Unfortunately our ambulance doesn’t have a flashing light so I have to sit and wait for the traffic to move with everyone else. It’s incredibly frustrating when very often I know it’s literally a matter of life or death that I get to where I need to be as quickly as possible.’ But there are lots of good things about being based in town too. The shelter is close to many of the town veterinary surgeries which makes ferrying the animals to and fro much easier than if they were based anywhere else. ‘Also being situated on St Saviours Road we’re quite visible in the community,’ adds Jonathon. ‘It’s a busy road and part of the school run for many families which helps as people know where we are when they need us.’ Town Crier-JULY2012.e$S_Governance style ideas 01/07/2012 11:02 Page 25
