We are nearly at the end of 2020, what an unexpected year it has been. With a set of numbers like 2020 in the title, it was a year that promised so much! Community get-togethers! Celebrations! and Remembrance!

All these things did happen but just not as we had expected! Our social world has taken a knock with this Covid-19 virus, but many of the Parish organisations have carried on as best they can. The WI took the ‘Virtual’ path, community get-togethers via ‘Zoom’. The Twinning Association had a good turnout for their October lunch, and the members of the Friendship Club are now social distancing down at John and Dawn’s. Fundraising continued with the St Lawrence Ladies Action Group for the Poppy Appeal, with an open-air pop-up stall in the Moignard Liberation Garden. St Lawrence Battle of Flowers have appointed a new committee and offer us an opportunity to enter a prize draw. Another change has been at the St Lawrence Youth Project where Emily Caton has replaced Anna as the Youth Leader, you can meet Emily within the pages of this edition. Celebrating milestone birthdays continues at Stuart Court as well as Halloween. Parish Retirement PARISH MATTERS Many of you will have been helped by Joy Le Cornu when you who have had cause to visit the Parish Hall over the years, but sadly, we said goodbye to her at the end of August when she from the Connétable retired after 20 years of working in the Parish Office. She had served under three Constables during that time and, although she had seen many changes in the way technology now plays a part in the daily life of the Parish administration, the personal touch that Welcome to the Winter 2020 Joy brought to her work and dealing with the public remained edition of Les Laurentins. evident. With the current restrictions in place, it was a very small group of us who gathered to thank her for her years of service to As the number of COVID-19 cases increase the Parish and to wish her well in her retirement as she spends across the Island, I hope that you are more time with her husband Den and family, sentiments which I keeping well and managing to cope with know many of you will share. the additional restrictions that we are now facing as we go through what is being referred to as the “COVID Winter”.

Although as I write this we are not in a lockdown situation, additional restrictions were implemented recently following the outbreak of multiple clusters of infection. Just as we are approaching the festive season, when as a Parish many of us meet for social events such as our Christmas Fair and Christmas lunch, it is likely that the Health Minister will make an order restricting the numbers at formal indoor gatherings and making it a legal requirement for us to wear face masks inside public places, such as shops.

Changes in our way of life have been impacting upon each of us as we come to terms with having less social contact, maintaining physical distancing, constantly washing and sanitising our hands and potentially for the foreseeable future, wearing masks inside public places.

Having spoken to a lot of people, I know that most of us are happy to “do our bit” and of course we know now that very recently, a Battle of Flowers number of companies have confirmed they have produced (in Although there was no Battle of Flowers held this year, we are record time), vaccines that are thought to be effective against this all hoping that we can get together again next year to enjoy life changing virus. If that is the case, then hopefully our lives in this special Parish activity. From February renovation work for many months, during which time it has been of next year, our collection will be undertaken by MBM Services, following a successful tender process. The company is run and managed by St Lawrence Parishioner Mark Bingle, who is looking forward to ensuring that there is a smooth transition when he assumes responsibility. In order to do that as safely as possible for his staff, we are all asked to place our refuse in a wheelie bin, which can be easily attached to the refuse vehicle so that the operators do not need to lift them. Wheelie bins should now also be used if the amount of glass you have for collection is too much to be put in the glass recycling container. There are also some changes to the current glass collection days; please note that glass will be collected in the third week of every month (see collection details on Page 42). Liberation 75 Photographic Exhibition I am grateful to everyone who has contacted me with messages of congratulation about the photographic exhibition that is on display in the Moignard Liberation Garden. It is testament to the hours of work that Karen Blampied and her team put into it, as well as giving recognition to everyone who contributed to the fascinating stories and memories. Following a visit in September the Lieutenant Governor, His Excellency Sir Stephen Dalton, also wrote to me and I am pleased that he has allowed me to share his letter in these pages.

A couple who have lived and worked in Jersey all their lives have accumulated assets of £3 million, including their main residence. Their only daughter went to University in the UK and has remained there ever since. On their death, the daughter will inherit all their wealth. This leaves their daughter with a potential UK inheritance tax exposure of over £1 million. Without planning whilst the couple are alive, 40% of their hard-earned wealth in Jersey may be taxed by HMRC in the UK.

Speak to us and we will explain how your own UK resident children need not face the same inheritance tax scenario.

It is proving to be so popular with parishioners and others from around the Island, as well as visitors to Jersey. Seldom is it possible to pass the exhibition without seeing quite a number of people wandering around the garden spending time reading the information

on the panels, and no doubt, reflecting on the sacrifices that were made by those living so close by over seventy- five years ago. Indeed, the panel introducing the exhibition shows German soldiers marching down the main road in front of the pub, shop and houses only a few feet away. It is particularly poignant to note that the buildings have changed very little over the years and it is possible to glance across the road and imagine what emotions that event might have stirred in the parishioners of St Lawrence at that time.

Karen Blampied, the inspiration and co-ordinator for the project, had invited everyone involved to meet together for the first time in many months to celebrate the achievement and success of the project. Sadly, not everyone was able to attend Alfie Pipon and Matt p13 Winter2020

Evans were greatly missed, but around fifteen people were present including Parish Deputies Gregory Guida and Kirsten Morel who were both part of the team. The celebration was toasted with a glass of champagne and Biscuits de Roses de Reims, which Karen encouraged everyone to dunk into their champagne, as is the tradition in France. The exhibition has been almost two years in the making, with the first coffee morning inviting parishioners to come along with their memorabilia, and to tell their stories, taking place in January 2019. Many months of hard work followed hearing and recording stories, taking photographs, compiling the information for proof-reading, laying out the artwork for the panels and

finally the production of the panels and the erection of them in the garden. The gathering was also a good opportunity for the team to meet Max Guegan and Sean Guegan from Sign Tech. Max had not only converted the design to fit the panels but also organised printing and construction of the panels.

Both the Connétable, Deidre Mezbourian, and Karen Blampied spoke about the journey that had taken place since Karen had first presented the idea to the Connétable in 2018. They thanked everyone for their interest and dedication to the project and celebrated the fact that it was one of very few projects that had been able to take place to mark Liberation 75 this year. Deidre also took the opportunity to thank Pat Sabey and her team who had been arranging the Family Fun Day event planned for Sunday, 10th May which, due to the Covid-19 situation, had sadly been cancelled.

Following the speeches, everyone posed for a group photograph in the extremely windy conditions. p14 Winter2020 A Child’s Occupation Autograph Book During the Occupation Memory Lane event at St Lawrence Church, Marlene Farrow brought in her aunt’s autograph book. Dawn has been running the Friendship Club for several years now and, traditionally, they meet in the Parish Hall on the last Wednesday of each month between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. The group usually number around 15-20 senior citizens who meet to have a game of bingo and a friendly chat. They had been unable to meet since lockdown began in March but as restrictions started to ease (and with the Parish Hall remaining closed to the public). Dawn decided to host the group in her home instead. She says that it was lovely seeing everyone Barbara Malzard and Doris Gates again at the first ‘at home’ gathering in August. The temporary change in venue, however, has been a great success and given an added homely feel to the afternoons. competitive as the bingo games may be, however, members are keen to share their prizes to ensure everyone goes home with Sadly, mainly due to the weather, the numbers were quite small on something. Mary Le Vesconte, one of the founder members of the the day I visited but nevertheless there was a warm, friendly and, club, on winning her second bingo prize, offered it to one of the dare I say, slightly competitive atmosphere when I arrived during other ladies in the group who had not yet won anything - “We are the mid-Bingo session. The bingo caller is Brian Hacquoil, ably a friendship club you know” she said. supported by his ‘assistant’ Tina Heath. Dawn originally became involved with the club by helping Tina’s mother, Doreen England, Dawn says that the bingos are extremely popular with prizes who had been the driving force of the group for many years. As ranging from tins of fruit and soup and packets of biscuits to home-made jams and marmalades as well as fresh eggs from the farm. The afternoon ended with a cup Dawn (standing) with Margaret Picot and John Emmanuel ()sitting of tea and cakes, followed by the raffle. The proceeds from the bingo cards and the raffle usually go towards the group’s annual Christmas lunch which, last year, was held at the St Brelade’s Bay Hotel. Sadly, it is not taking place this Christmas, but Dawn says that she will organise a lunch in 2021 as soon as it is safe to do so.

As with everyone else, I’m sure, I came away from Dawn and John’s home feeling relaxed and happy having spent a delightful couple of hours in a warm and friendly atmosphere chatting and laughing together. The group is open to anyone to attend – there are a number of couples that usually go along, Dawn told me, but it is most welcoming to people who live on their own. If you are interested in joining or just want to pop along to find out what it is all about, you can telephone Dawn Emmanuel on 862132 for more information. Banking, by

Celebrations at Stuart Court

We have had several birthday Celebrations at Stuart Court. In September one of our residents Yvonne Rouault celebrated her 101st Birthday, she does not mind sharing her age with your readers as she is very proud of this fact. As you can see Yvonne had a cake almost as big as herself!

Time, like change, is inevitable and it passes by so quickly when we are so busy with our daily lives at Stuart Court we try not to forget to enjoy and live our lives to the fullest with every passing tick of the clock.

We try to take time and enjoy every moment, keep our dreams alive, continuously expand our personal space for guided reflection and contemplation. During the pandemic we have all striven to keep infection at bay and accept risks, and most importantly, live a wonderful life because looking back we will remember today, the lessons we have learnt to be thankful for them.

You can’t keep the WI down – thanks to our Committee, ST LAWRENCE WI by Anne Bougard and especially our Secretary Liz Dicker, we have all kept in touch and have met together on several occasions. When lockdown was eased the first outing arranged for us was a visit to La Mare Vineyards where afternoon tea was served. There were then lunch outings to Jersey Pearl and a lovely afternoon was spent at where tea was served, and members took the opportunity to explore the grounds. The latest outing was dinner at St John’s Inn where members were able to relax and have a chat around the suitably distanced tables.

We have also been kept up to date with activities carried out by other Jersey WIs by the receipt of regular newsletters and reports. During the summer our Island Chairman visited our Press Correspondent (yours truly) to present the Communications Award which was won by St Lawrence for the second time. More outings are being planned for the future, but these will be notified to members as and when Covid guidance allows. In the meantime, stay safe and we hope to be able to meet monthly at some time in the not too distant future.

As Autumn gives way to Winter, thoughts turn to more substantial reds to accompany stews, casseroles, lasagnes & meat dishes generally. As with the second Article illustrating some “exotic” white wines, I would encourage you to seek out a few of the more unusual reds or traditional reds grown in other areas.

Popular red grape varieties by Vino Veritas Firstly let’s briefly recap the regular reds which most of you will have tried : Cabernet Sauvignon (at home in Bordeaux, USA & everywhere else in the world), Syrah/Shiraz (N. Rhone, Australia & now popular in other countries), Tempranillo (Spain), Merlot (don’t watch the film “Sideways” if you like Merlot !; sometimes called Ribena for grown ups) (widely planted), Pinot Noir ( do Winte watch “Sideways”) (Burgundy, New Zealand, USA), Sangiovese (Italy) . Less well-known reds Good, and generally affordable, examples of less well-known reds can be found locally in supermarkets and wine merchants. Winter definitely calls armers for hearty Syrah/Shiraz but please also experiment with a few of those suggested below. Here goes:

Alicante Bouschet – originally from France but increasingly used in quality reds from the Alentejo in Portugal; unusually the flesh/juice is red; dark colour; black fruits?

Carmenere – well established in Chile; good with BBQs & meat generally; dark berries and plums?

Grenache – the major grape in S. Rhône: often blended (Chateauneuf du Pape, Côte du Rhône & below in “GSM”); full of character; real quality in Australia now as a monocast; called Garnacha in Spain where it (and Tempranillo) produce excellent wines; aromas of leather in older wine; red fruits?

GSM –blend of Grenache, Syrah & Mourvedre; classic Rhône grapes used a lot in Australia; do try as an alternative to Syrah on its own

Malbec – the “national” grape of Argentina; probably known to you and a good restaurant choice; rich, fruity & spicy; blackberries?

South Africa- there are a lot of South African wines now available in Jersey; look out for Merlot, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Malbec amongst others

Touriga Nacional - Portugal’s iconic grape variety, used extensively in Port but increasingly in real quality reds from Douro, Alentejo & Dao areas, blackberries or violets on the nose?

Zinfandel / Primitivo – It took DNA fingerprinting in the 1990s to confirm what experts had begun to suspect: California’s Zinfandel grape and the Primitivo from Southern Italy are one and the same! Headily aromatic; sweet, spicy fruit bomb; blackberries and blueberries.

I do hope you can find a few of the above different reds to try, preferably in a large bowl shaped glass so you can swirl the wine (not too vigorously else your partner will end up wearing it!) to release the aromas.

Remember: “Today is the first day of the rest of your life”. QUARTER PAGE 2020 JFTU MOWERS
