Front Page Picture : Beresford Street Kitchen photographs are From the Editor courtesy of Stephen Wyatt. Featured articles As I write, the white stuff is dropping from the sky, but it is not settling – yet! February usually does bring snow and very cold winds from the North. However, P10 La Cloche continues to grow and grow, although I admit that the contents of the Making magazine were looking rather sparse at the beginning of January. Then, in the paper last fortnight and particularly in the last week, the copy material and flowers photographs were pouring in, much to my pleasure and relief .

Our Parish Personality in this edition is Barry de la Mare, better known for his classic and vintage cars. A fascinating story, and some lovely pictures of his cars, in particular the one P car he bought as a teenager, and still has it in his possession today. Barry maintains his own 12 cars himself, and was a founder member of the Old Motor Club, which he continues Parish to support with enthusiasm to the present day. personality A new charitable innovation commenced last year and is working very well, it is the Beresford Street Kitchen, located in Beresford Street, St Helier, and provides necessary work Barry experience for autistic people and others who suffer the ‘invisible’ illnesses, ie mental de la Mare health issues, including Downs syndrome. The adults who manage the business in the frontline have suffered the stigma of mental health and are excellent role models for the young people working their way up the career ladder in the restaurant/cafe and P20 hospitality business. It is a tremendous morale booster to anyone keen to build on their strengths and confidence when entering the wider world of adulthood. The hot chocolate De La Salle is highly recommended! They offer some delicious food for lunch, and afternoon tea. A Celebrations more detailed report and pictures inside. The Parish has been busy, too, with Father Christmas in December, and elections for honorary positions on the and Roads Inspectors. Also the annual New Year lunches for our Senior Citizens in January, which were well attended. In the meantime, St Saviour’s Church is going through a sea-change and the inside of our Parish church is looking more like a building site. In December, after Christmas, the organ pipes were removed and the pews from the far left hand side of the central aisle have been P22 removed ready for the new lighting and new plaques to be installed. The construction Beresford work should be finished by the end of March, in time for celebrating Easter, and a special Street event for the blessing of the church and its new look is being organised for June 3rd, 2018. Kitchen Put that date in your diaries! All church services are being held in the Parish Hall, for the time being. St Saviour’s Battle of Flowers Association has been struggling for several months and it has been touch and go whether or not they will enter a float this year. They have managed to make the decision at last to enter a paper float, since they no longer have the facility of P27 a large shed to build a big float and also a junior float. But to maintain their good relations Community with the Parish and particularly their faithful followers, a paper float is the best idea, and most economical. They will need all the help they can get to make thousands of paper project in flowers. Please get in touch as soon as you can! Napal Anyone who is keen to write or take photographs of Parish events, can certainly do so, and send in their contributions to the Parish office, or direct to me by email at [email protected]. If you know of any event that should be covered and promoted in La Cloche, please let me know. P Cara Billot Miller 32 - St Paul’s FC

Hospice Raffle The 2017 Jersey Hospice Christmas Cake Raffle winner was Mr Mirto Sappe . The total amount raised was a wonderful £1,651.32! p10 Spring 2018 St Saviour Parish Magazine ST SAVIOUR’S Battl eof Flowers Association The committee have managed to make the decision - at last - to enter a paper float, since the use of a large shed to build a big float and also a junior float is no longer available. But to maintain the good relations with the Parish and particularly the faithful followers and team of helpers, a paper float is the best idea, and the most economical.

Although the Association are still looking for a new permanent building/shed for building future floats, they have managed to secure a temporary solution to enable them to enter this year’s Battle of Flowers parade. Sadly, due to a lack of space they have taken the decision (not lightly) to enter only one float rather than the usual two this year, but this float will be a joint effort with adults and children working together. So, the St Saviour’s Battle of Flowers Association will be entering a Paper Flower float rather than the normal fully floral one. The committee have had a hard time trying to decide what to do for 2018 due to lack of premises, but it was felt that rather than not enter at all this year, making a paper entry would be the best and cheaper option. This way St Saviour can still be part of the parade and keep all the loyal followers/helpers on board, but save much needed funds towards a future structure.

Our launch date was extremely busy with four elements which encompassed large numbers of the Lasallian community. Even the unpredictable Jersey weather was kind to us, giving a sunny and warm September day.

The Centenary service for the Primary school was held in the Sports Hall led by Chaplain David Cahill and attended by all Primary staff and children. The Superior General of the De La Salle Brothers, Brother Robert Schieler and Brother Aidan Kilty, had travelled from Rome to be with us along with past Head teachers and Brother Provincials, Sean Sellors and Laurence Hughes. It was an appropriate and happy celebration for our younger pupils. The Mass at St Thomas’ Church was attended by all Secondary staff and pupils and approximately 120 guests. Despite the Bishop being unable to attend through ill health, it was a joyous occasion, personalised to the College, and judging by the positive feedback received, enjoyed by the congregation. The final school based occasion was a Primary School picnic in the Sports Hall where the Brothers distributed De La Salle gingerbread people to all the pupils. We are having a formal opening at 9.45am on Sunday 3rd June. I Rector do warmly invite all those who live in St Saviour’s Parish. It is your By Rev Peter Dyson church and has been one of the centres of community life for 1000 years – and I hope it will continue that way. Both the church and the churchyard are such a resource for us all – spiritually, for meetings, architecturally, historically and, the churchyard, a haven for flora, fauna and animals. So, whether you come to church every week or once in a blue moon; whether you have oodles of faith or none – or are a member of another faith, you will be so welcome and if you can, please join us on 3rd June. Everyone has something to give and to receive. And as at the time of writing, we are looking at ways of helping the Parish church re-connect with all our parishioners on their life’s spiritual journey in all their varieties. For myself I find traditional worship both important and helpful, but I am well aware that is not the case for a lot of people – and so we are exploring several gentle and informal ways of how the church can come alongside people helpfully in our contemporary age.
