October 19th 2011 will certainly be going down as a great day for me and my family, and I hope for St Martin as well. For me, the most satisfying part of polling day (apart from the result) was the fact that St Martin was the top Parish for turnout, with over 63.5% of you coming out and making the effort to vote. I would like to think it was a reflection on the hard work that Bob and I put into our campaigns…so a very BIG “Thank You” to you all. St Martin scored a hat trick last year, because having a new Connétable, Rector and Deputy inside a twelve month period is something that doesn’t happen very often, but Michel, Gerry and myself have already got off to a really good start. Bel Val Farm is the home of Colin and Paulette De La Haye, who have worked the farm for the last 30 years. Covering some 200 vergees, the farm grows mainly Jersey Royals and also a small area of daffodils, parsley, runner beans and anemones for the export and local market. Included in the 200 vergees are 10 vergees of steep South facing côtils overlooking Bel Val Cove which produce some of the earliest potatoes in the Island. It was the hard work, dedication and passion that goes into working the côtils that Sir John and Lady McColl came to see. All the côtils are hand worked, using a tractor and winch and traditional ploughs and harrows dating back 100 years. A highlight of Year 6 at St Martin’s School is the annual residential trip to France. Maya Shobbroke Walton, a Year 6 student, reports. The French Trip, to most of us, was like a dream that had found its way into reality. It was always in the mist on the horizon, and even when it happened, I only half believed that it was happening. On the morning we set out for the boat, we did some brilliant activities including foraging and zorbing (the only problem with it was that it didn’t go on for long enough). However, when we arrived at Chateau de Tertre (the PGL centre we were staying at) the long coach journey was soon forgotten in an astonishing swirl of nice food, hot chocolate machines, Left: A leap of faith climbing, shopping, competing and dancing. Far left: Visit to the Some of the activities that stand out most in American War my memory are archery, climbing and trapeze. Cemetery above Omaha During archery we played a game called Beach in Normandy Pizza. If you hit the white circle on the target Above: A trip not to be you got cheese, black: olives, red: tomato forgotten sauce, etc. Climbing was worth doing for the sense of achievement you got when you reached the top, and the free feeling of being up in the air. But what was really discussed and anticipated was the trapeze. Basically you climbed to the top of an extremely unstable pole, then made a leap of faith and attempted to grab hold of a bar hanging on two chains in mid-air. Many people caught it, although being at the top of the pole rather resembled balancing on a very wobbly branch the size of a small plate ten metres above the ground. I would like to mention that although this sounds slightly scary and unrewarding, it was exhilarating and fun when you jumped off the pole. As each person was being lowered down, we played animal charades. Unfortunately, trying to impersonate an animal in mid-air made us look like a concussed squid sleepwalking whilst having a nightmare about a calamari restaurant (nobody suggested that as the animal of course). You can imagine how my horse impression turned out. Later in the week, we went to the Normandy landing beaches. By the time the next issue of this magazine is published, the Rates Assembly will have taken place, and the Rates Demands will have been sent out. Remember that you then have three months to make your payment to avoid the infamous ten percent surcharge. About twenty percent of the rates were paid by internet home-banking last year, about double that of the previous year, when we first introduced the facility. Branchage The first will be on Thursday 5th July, with the second Visite being held on Thursday 6th September. Please remember that not only must your hedges and overhanging branches be trimmed back, but that all trimmings must be removed from the roads and footpaths. Wi-Fi at the Hall? We have requested an estimate for the installation of Wi-Fi at the Public Hall, but would be interested to hear your views as to whether it would be a well-used facility.
