SASCOC saluted the victorious South African rugby sevens side after they grabbed the gold medal at the World Games in Cali, on Friday.

The sevens side beat 33-24 in the final to win gold in the final World Games sevens competition as the code has now been incorporated into the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, .

“What a fantastic win,” said SASCOC CEO Mr Tubby Reddy. “This win certainly goes down as a historic moment for South African sport as the guys will be remembered for winning the last World Games rugby sevens gold medal.

“It’s very heartening to see this group of players under the wing of coach Vuyo Zangqa go all the way here in Cali. They have made Team SA proud as well as the entire nation back home.

“It’s also great to see that we have certainly upped our game since the last Games in 2009 where we won three medals.

Lifesaving and sevens rugby also both won medals in 2009 and these Games saw our tug-of-war girls force their way onto the podium and announce themselves as a force to be reckoned with.”

Team SA have now won two medals in the lifesaving code and one in tug-of-war and rugby sevens. In keeping with our medal incentive scheme, Ms Jean Kelly, Chef de Mission of Team South Africa confirmed that SARU will receive R300 000 from SASCOC that will go towards the continued growth of the Rugby 7s team.

The Games come to a conclusion on Sunday.

ORIENTEERING

Michael Crone made amends for his failure to finish the sprint event of the orienteering action here at the World Games on Saturday when he ended 33rd in the distance event.

The Johannesburg medical student gave a good account of himself at the scenic and rustic Parque Salud on the outskirts of the city.

He clocked 44min 57sec for the course, just under 11 minutes slower than winner, Matthias Kyburze of .

“I’m pretty happy with the way I went,” said Crone. “I slowed a bit towards the end and maybe lost about 20 seconds at control No 31 near the end.

“But there were no major mistakes and I guess I just ran too slowly. In hindsight I should also have drunk a bit more fluid.”

As expected Crone had to watch out for the treacherous bamboo thickets. “It’s not the big bamboo but the little bamboo and we went through a patch with lots of thorns.

“I was actually quite pleased to be wearing glasses at that stage,” he said, sporting numerous little slices on his arms.

“I definitely prefer the city type terrain to the park but maybe this was a good thing as it exposes me to this sort of stuff.”

Meanwhile in the aerosports competition our lone competitor Chris Teague ended 23rd out of 36 competitors as American Curtis Bartholomew took gold in the canopy parachuting competition.

Teague was scheduled to jump at 2.30pm on Saturday but then organisers decided that only the leading nine contenders needed to jump.

Aero sport and Orienteering were Team SA’s final competitors and the team will fly home with four medals – one gold courtesy of the rugby sevens side, two bronze medals in lifesaving and one more in tug-of-war. That beats the two bronze and one silver medal return from the last games in City, Taiwan.
