MEDAL TABLE AFTER DAY 2

SASCOC congratulated Team South African medal-winning lifesavers at the 2013 in , on Saturday

Lifesaving provided two bronze medals on day two of the Games, in the shape of Armand Marais (50m manikin without fins) and then in the 4x25m relay. Team members were Paul van Achterbergh, Barjo van Niekerk, Marais and Dolfie Visser.

“What a great start to the Games,” said SASCOC President Mr Gideon Sam, who has taken time out to visit every code that has been in action to date.

“These two medals will serve to inspire the other codes representing Team here in Cali. It’s great to see our sportsmen and women’s hard work in training coming to fruition on the international stage.

“Still, I said before the team left South Africa that I like nothing better than hearing the national anthem on foreign soil, so I’m still looking forward to experiencing that here in Cali.”

NEWS:

GENERAL:

From a very hot Cali, Team SA members have been competing, training and supporting the rest of Team SA.

Today saw Christopher Teague scouting out the skies and the venue where Canopy Piloting will be taking place when he leaps out of the airplane at speeds in excess of 170 km per hour.

Bianca and Mandy ( and Trampoline) have been very frustrated as their International Federation decide if Bianca’s competition will be taking place or if the competition will be cancelled. Read more further in the update.

Michael Crone and Tania Wimberley were plotting on their maps (care of Google maps) where Michael will be competing. They have found various terrains very similar to the competition terrain. This is where you will find Michael for the next couple of days. Michael will be competing in the sprint and middle distance events in .

The women’s Tug-of-War team were putting the final touches to their preparation for competition which starts and ends tomorrow.

The Rugby 7’s team took to the swimming pools today to do some recovery training after the epic journey to Cali and then spent the afternoon in the BodyTech gym which has given the whole of Team SA free access to their facilities, for which we are very grateful.

LIFESAVING:

Lifesavers win Team SA’s first medals at World Games

July 28th, 2013 Published in Media Releases

Two medals within the space of 20 minutes had Team South Africa’s World Games campaign up and running on Saturday.

Lifesaving was the code that first came to the medals party as Armand Marais took bronze in the 50-metre manikin without fins. He clocked 30.52sec as Stefan Costamanga of won with a 29.43 world games record.

And he had barely had time to towel off and allow his medal moment to sink in when he was playing a crucial part in the men’s 4x25m manikin relay bronze medal for the South Africans.

The team will sleep a bit easier now that the first (and not the last) medals have been secured after just two days of competition.

At the previous Games in City, Taiwan four years ago, the first of three medals only arrived on the penultimate day of the Games. Again it was lifesaving who provided a medal, with barefoot waterskiing (silver) and Sevens Rugby (bronze) also reaping reward.

“I’ve had this goal for eight years,” said an emotional Marais afterwards. “I’ve won medals at all the other big lifesaving competitions but the guys have always told me that a World Games medal is the big one. And they were right… I’ve still got goosebumps at the whole experience.

GYMNASTICS

SA gymnast still in limbo at World Games as the FIG reports unacceptable conditions at Cali’s Gymnastics venues

Saturday July 27, 2013

Our one gymnast at the World Games in Cali, Colombia, Bianca Zoonekynd is getting itchy feet before her scheduled events, writes Mark Etheridge.

That’s because after repeated delays and hitches leading up to the tumbling and double mini-trampoline disciplines, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) informed its member federations participating at the World Games 2013 Cali about unacceptable conditions at competition and training facilities.

FIG was concerned about the considerable risk that competitors in Trampoline, Tumbling, Acrobatic and might face.

The competitions in Ribbon had to be cancelled on Thursday due to strong air draughts caused by the provisional air condition system.

Francisco falls short in snooker at World Games

Saturday July 27, 2013

By Mark Etheridge in Cali, Colombia

It was close but not close enough for Team South Africa’s Peter Francisco as the veteran snooker ace went down in the round of 16 at the World Games on Saturday.

Francisco opened up in style, beating Englishman Nigel Bond (or Niguel) as the local organisers described him, 100-13 in the first frame.

But Bond bounced back to win the second frame 58-14 and the next 69-33.

Francisco had to win the third frame 62-21 to tie things up a two frames apiece. http://www.roadtorio.co.za/2013/07/27/francisco-falls-short-in-snooker-at-world- games/
