Most chapters contain practical classroom examples to assist in the implementation of the concepts and are written for students of varying competencies, behaviors, and ethnic and cultural origins. Boehm 157 - 167 Introduction This manual is designed as a resource guide for pre-service and classroom teachers who have an interest in geographic education. The chapters cover a variety of topics ranging from the nature of geography to the methodologies of geographic education and career opportunities available to those who wish to continue in the field. Included are the most recent developments in geographic education such as - the five themes, the national standards, technology, and authentic assessment strategies. Each chapter offers suggestions and ideas that can be included in general geography/social studies methods courses or in in-service seminars for practicing classroom teachers. The manual is designed for those in the classroom to better understand some of the methods and approaches that will assist in making geography teaching and learning more mean- ingful and exciting for students. Most chapters contain practical classroom examples that will assist in the implementation of the concepts described in the text. These examples are designed to meet the needs of pupils of varying competencies, behaviors and ethnic and cultural origins. Due to the restriction on the length of each chapter, only an introduction to the basic ideas could be provided. Natoli Abstract:This chapter examines the nature of geography from several viewpoints and many of the ordinary decisions we make about Earth that indicate our propensity for geography. It also explores the common characteris- tics of geographers' interests, the metaphors they use for reflection, the lenses through which they view Earth in per- ceiving and accommodating different perspectives that influence our conceptions of geographical reality. It outlines the fundamental interrelated themes, ideas, and scientific methodologies used to investigate geographic problems as well as the significance of cartography for understanding the nature of geographic reality.It provides a rationale for studying geography in the midst of constant change and the disorder that marks the character of Earth. Finally, it appeals to the responsibility implicit in studying geography for participatory citizenship and for becoming stewards of Earth. Fifty Years of Historical Geography in Canada Graeme Wynn Department of Geography University of British Columbia ABSTRACT: In this essay I enlist Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers to provide a title and a structure for inevitably personal reflections on the scholarly contributions of Canadian historical geographers and the changing fortunes of historical geography in their country since the 1960s. From the “Northwest Passage” (“one warm line…”) to “Make and Break Harbour” (where “the boats are so few”) this is a tale of considerable achievement, but one that, may lack a particularly happy or optimistic ending unless we attend to “The Field Behind the Plow” (and “Put another season’s promise in the ground”). Because this story, however told, bears the marks of influence from the United Kingdom, the United States and elsewhere, this essay speaks to developments beyond the territory of Canada and the geographical interests of those who live within its borders. Like several of Rogers’ songs, it might also be considered something of a parable. hen Robert Wilson invited me to give the fourth HGSG distinguished lecture he observed: “You may speak on whatever topic you like. It could be about some aspect Wof your current research or about the state of historical geography (or both).” In the end I decided to do both – and more. A key area where physical geography can contribute to land management is in the delimitation of landscape units. Such units are fundamental to formal socio-economic zoning and management in territorial planning. However, numerous methodologies—based on widely varying criteria—exist to delineate and map landscapes. We have selected five consolidated methodologies with current applications for mapping the landscape to analyse the different role of physical geography in each: (1) geomorphological landscape maps based on landforms; (2) geosystemic landscape maps; (3) Landscape Character Assessment; (4) landscape studies based on visual landscape units; (5) landscape image-pair test. We maintain that none of these methodologies are universally applicable, but that each contributes important insights into landscape analysis for land management within particular biogeophysical and social contexts.

The importance of ecosystem services was demonstrated in the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment which was a scientific appraisal of the condition and trends in the ecosystems of the world, including an appraisal of conservation actions. Many ecosystem services are considered to be degrading, such as pollination for agriculture, so it is important to assess the ecosystem services provided by current land use types and then move strategically to conserve and improve them.

Emphasis is placed on how this information relates to students with learning disabilities. The paper emphasizes the importance of effective teaching of geographic literacy in students with learning disabilities. There is a lack of activities related to geography in the special education curriculum and the student's Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) does not generally include geography goals. The paper questions the artificial activities that are in place in the special education curriculum. This review of the literature is intended as a search for ideas, strategies, and ways to effectively reach the population of students with learning disabilities. (Contains 37 references.)     Faculty Hiring Proposal 2015-16: Landscape Ecology and Environmental Geography Position Description: We seek a broadly trained faculty member in landscape ecology or environmental geography to teach in interdisciplinary, team-taught programs with sustainability and environmental studies themes. Although both landscape ecology and environmental geography are already highly interdisciplinary fields, we seek a faculty member who can cross greater interdivisional divides to teach with other faculty from diverse fields such as the visual and 3-dimensional arts, environmental history, computer science, and creative writing. Competitive applicants will be able to demonstrate previous experience teaching in this way, and success in team-teaching interdisciplinary courses. The field of landscape ecology integrates biotic, abiotic, and geomorphological patterns with humanistic and holistic perspectives across the natural and social sciences. We seek someone well-versed in the most important concepts in both landscape ecology and environmental (or integrated) geography: relationships among pattern, process and scale, and the spatial aspects of interactions between humans and the natural world. It is crucial that this applicant be able to communicate complicated terminology to entry-level college students. We are also interested in applicants with specific teaching experience in wildland fire, disturbance ecology, invasive species ecology, biogeography, landscape geomorphology, resource management, international issues in geography, and GIS-based cartography. Other desired traits include a history of teaching atmospheric science, outdoor or field-based classes, hands-on sustainability or restoration-themed classes, and climate change or energy topics. Experience with landscape architecture and the ability to teach with architects/designers in programs like Sustainable Design would also be a benefit.
