The PAS and American Abolitionism: A Century of Activism from the American Revolutionary Era to the Civil War By Richard S. Newman, Associate Professor of History Rochester Institute of Technology The Pennsylvania Abolition Society was the world's most famous antislavery group during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Indeed, although not as memorable as many later abolitionists (from William Lloyd Garrison and Lydia Maria Child to Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth), Pennsylvania reformers defined the antislavery movement for an entire generation of activists in the United States, Europe, and even the Caribbean. If you were an enlightened citizen of the Atlantic world following the American Revolution, then you probably knew about the PAS. Benjamin Franklin, a former slaveholder himself, briefly served as the organization's president. French philosophes corresponded with the organization, as did members of John Adams’ presidential Cabinet. British reformers like Granville Sharp reveled in their association with the PAS. It was, Sharp told told the group, an "honor" to be a corresponding member of so distinguished an organization.1 Though no supporter of the formal abolitionist movement, America’s “first man” George Washington certainly knew of the PAS's prowess, having lived for several years in the nation's temporary capital of Philadelphia during the 1790s. So concerned was the inaugural President with abolitionist agitation that Washington even shuttled a group of nine slaves back and forth between the Quaker State and his Mount Vernon home (still, two of his slaves escaped). The PAS was indeed a powerful abolitionist organization. PAS Origins The roots of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society date to 1775, when a group of mostly Quaker men met at a Philadelphia tavern to discuss antislavery measures. -

Some of the 1 female descendants were grieved that they and their children could not be noticed. This just appeal could only be met by urging the want of space allotted, and the difficulty of identifying many of them after having parted with their patronymic. It is our purpose, as far as we are able, to amend this acknowledged wrong and add more information, not then accessible, of those who retain the name, as well as those who by marriage have dropped it. \J The name Dunster signifies a dweller upon a dun, or down, and is of Saxon origin. There is a market town in Somersetshire, England, and a castle there by that name. Hence, we suppose, the origin of the crest v (Book of Family Crests, Vol. I., page 155, and Vol. II., plate 85, No. 25,) —" Dunster, out of the top of a tower, ar. an arm emboss, vested gri., cuffed of the first, hold- ing a tilting spear, sa." But no knowledge or intimation has ever reached the writer that that or other crest was ever used or referred to by the American head of the family. -

Genesis 34-36 genesis God’s Book of Beginnings Dinah and the Shechemites (Genesis 34) 34:1-5 While they were camped outside the city of Shechem Genesis 33:18, Leah’s daughter, Dinah Genesis 30:21, walked through the city. However, Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hittite (“ruler of that area”) saw Dinah, “took her and violated her”. After these events, Shechem felt love for and spoke tenderly to her, then expressed to his father his desire to marry Dinah. With no marriage commitment between Shechem (Hamor) and Dinah (Jacob) prior to this incident, the act could only be considered rape. Also, there are many descriptive words in the account that also support the criminal nature of Shechem’s actions (“took” v.2, “violated” v.2, “defiled” v.5, etc). 34:6-12 When returning from the fields, Jacob’s sons found out what happened to Dinah. Jacob’s response was patient, while his sons were immediately outraged. Hamor and Shechem attempted to quell angry reactions by going quickly to Jacob, claiming Shechem’s great love for Dinah and offering marriage between Shechem and Dinah. In addition, they offered any amount of dowry (the bride price) Jacob would request. Furthermore, Hamor also suggested the two groups intermarry and generally intermingle their property Joshua 23:12-13. These verses contain the first Biblical mention of the nation being referred to as “Israel” v.7. 34:13-24 Dinah’s brothers responded “deceitfully” to the suggested solution. They pretended to agree with everything Hamor and Shechem offered, but only if the men of Shechem would be circumcised. -

It’s an odd question, mostly because Jews are the only ethnic group who would actually have the audacity to ask it about themselves. It is diffi cult to imagine Swedes, Bosnians, or Italians sitting around and pondering that question. Jews have never been able to aff ord the luxury of that lack of introspection. The German liberal rabbi and theologian Leo Baeck put it this way: “The Jews have always been a minority. But a minor- ity is compelled to think, and that is the blessing of being a minor- ity.” So, why does there need to be a Jewish people? It’s quite sim- ple: the Jews were God’s last resort. The Book of God’s Disappointments For a supposedly “Jewish” book, the TANAKH (the Hebrew Bible) certainly takes its time in getting to the Jews. The fi rst eleven chap- ters of the Bible have nothing to do with Jews or Judaism. -

Review of Joy A. Schroeder, Dinah's Lament: the Biblical Legacy of Sexual Violence in Christian Interpretation

SCHROEDER, DINAH’S LAMENT: THE BIBLICAL LEGACY OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN CHRISTIAN INTERPRETATION (MINNEAPOLIS: FORTRESS PRESS, 2007) Judith Mckinlay, Otago University Had I realized when I offered to review this book that this was a study of Christian interpretation spanning the period 150 to 1600 C.E. and not that of today, I might not have sent off my email response. What I would have missed! This book ties interpretation to context with immediate relevance for today, as well as providing such a guide through the commentators of the period that I was fully absorbed from beginning to end. Although this is one of a number of recent re- ception history studies, the author is not a biblical scholar but a church historian, and a feature of the book is the wide range of early material that she has managed to access: sermons, letters, and priests’ handbooks, as well as hagiographies and popular literature of the time. One of the most fruitful sources is the Glossa ordinaria, a Vulgate text with interlinear and marginal glosses dating from 1100s. As would be expected most, though not all, of these works were written by clergy for clergy; a few journals and letters written by women provide another view. Schroeder skillfully guides the reader through centuries whose worldviews and assumptions about the meaning of virginity, chastity, and women’s place in the home were significantly dif- ferent to mine. If I was surprised to find women, who differed significantly from their male counterparts in their attitudes towards the victims of rape, voicing some of the same gender as- sumptions, I needed to be reminded that they too were shaped by the cultural understandings of their world, just as we are by ours.
