Sashiko is a very old form of hand sewing using a simple running stitch, sewn in repeating or interlocking patterns through one or more layers of fabric. It is important to keep the stitches as even in length and as regular as possible.
The objective of this class is to become familiar with Sashiko. We will learn what Sashiko is through reading materials. To practice Sashiko stitching, a material we are using in the class has a traditional Sashiko pattern pre-transferred onto the fabric in the form of a stencil. Some Sashiko paper patterns are also provided at the class.
We will also learn how to trace patterns in the second half of the class.
Material package ($20) includes: Flat-woven cotton fabric that has a Sashiko pattern pre-printed Sashiko thread Sashiko needles Traditional Sashiko patterns Reading materials
Participants must bring the following items to the workshop: Waxed carbon (Must be waxed) Soft tracing wheel (not spiky one) FQ of flat-woven fabric (We practice transferring patterns and stitch) Flower pins and thimbles Sheet protectors (light weight) Scissors Tracer pen or a ballpoint pen
