E-mail: [email protected] Abstract.- The occurrence of the beetle family Torridincolidae is reported from Paraguay. Adults, pupae and larvae were collected within the Atlantic Forest ecosystem from the vicinity of waterfalls in the Yvytyruzú Cordillera, De- partment Guairá. A checklist is given for all Torridincolidae species described to date. Key words: Torridincollidae, Myxophaga, Paraguay, new records, World checklist. Resumen.- La ocurrencia de la familia Torridincolidae se divulga de Paraguay. Se colectaron adultos, pupas y larvas en la ecosistema del Bosque Atlántico cerca de saltos de Cordillera del Yvytyruzú, departamento Guairá. Se da una checklist de todas las especies de Torridincolidae actualmente descrito. Palabras clave: Torridincollidae, Myxophaga, Paraguay, nuevos reportes, checklist mundial. Lepiceridae, head morphology, systematic position, function Abstract. Adult head structures of Lepicerus inaequalis were examined in detail and interpreted functionally and phylogenetically. The monogeneric family clearly belongs to Myxophaga. A moveable process on the left mandible is an autapomorphy of the subor- der. Even though Lepiceridae is the “basal” sistergroup of the remaining three myxophagan families, it is likely the group which has accumulated most autapomorphic features, e.g. tuberculate surface structure, internalised antennal insertion, and a specific entogna- thous condition. Adults of Lepiceridae and other myxophagan groups possess several features which are also present in larvae (e.g., premental papillae, semimembranous mandibular lobe). This is probably related to a very similar life style and has nothing to do with “desembryonisation”. Lepiceridae and other myxophagans share a complex and, likely, derived character of the feeding appa- ratus with many polyphagan groups (e.g., Staphyliniformia). The mandibles are equipped with large molae and setal brushes. The latter interact with hairy processes or lobes of the epi- and hypopharynx. This supports a sistergroup relationship between both sub- orders. We investigated the ‘performance’ of characters from external morphology and the other character systems and the effects of abundant missing entries by comparing the data decisiveness, retention and consistency indices of four different character partitions. The results indicate that the performances of the different partitions are not related to the proportions of missing entries, but instead are negatively correlated to their proportion of informative characters, suggesting that the morphological information in this group is subject to high levels of homoplasy. -

Report on travel to Ecuador during May 11-25, 2011 by Prof. Scott R. Shaw Two UW faculty members (Scott Shaw and Greg Brown), thirteen UW undergraduate students, three graduate students, and one post-doctoral researcher studied for two weeks in mid-May 2011 at the Yanayacu Biological Research Station on the eastern slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes. Yanayacu Station is at 7,100 feet elevation and encompasses nearly 5,000 acres of primary cloud forest situated at one of the world’s most biologically diverse sites. Shaw and Brown’s travel on this expedition was funded partly by a 2010 Global Perspectives Grant and partly by a UW International Programs Faculty Travel Grants. The Global Perspectives Grant is also partly funding Shaw’s participation in the upcoming May 2012 Ecuador expedition. Other funding for students on the May 2011 expedition was provided by the UW Honors Program, UW Environment and Natural Resources Program, Wyoming NASA Space Consortium, UW International Programs, and the National Science Foundation. Led by entomology Professor Scott Shaw, the 2011 research and teaching expedition to Ecuador continued his National Science Foundation funded study of tropical plants, plant-feeding caterpillars and their interactions with parasitic wasps that kill the caterpillars (the CAPEA project: Caterpillars and Parasitoids of the Eastern Andes). CAPEA is an ongoing, long-term biodiversity research project dedicated to the inventory of caterpillars, and discovery of information about their life history, food plants and their associated parasitoids (mostly wasps and flies). Our study site is the Yanayacu Biological Station (YBS), located at 2200 meters elevation in the Quijos Valley of Napo Province, in the Andes Mountains of northeastern Ecuador. -
