Instructor: Steve Greenhouse 2 I am your instructor: ◦ I am not a paleontologist (I’m a recently retired electrical engineer). Paleontology and paleoanthropology are long-time interests of mine. ◦ I hope and expect there will be plenty of discussion and questions. ◦ So, I won’t have all the answers, but I’ll try to get them. ◦ I apologize in advance for mispronouncing some biological names (e.g., Archaeopteryx). This course will present evolution from a scientific point of view: ◦ It is, after all, a scientific discipline. ◦ This course is under the OLLI Science Program, not the Religion Program. 3 There is a lot of material to cover in 8 sessions: ◦ Slides I have generated. ◦ There are 17 DVDs from the “Great Courses” available (~30 min each). We investigated the ‘performance’ of characters from external morphology and the other character systems and the effects of abundant missing entries by comparing the data decisiveness, retention and consistency indices of four different character partitions. The results indicate that the performances of the different partitions are not related to the proportions of missing entries, but instead are negatively correlated to their proportion of informative characters, suggesting that the morphological information in this group is subject to high levels of homoplasy. -

Date: August 1, 2016 To: Academic Affairs From: Frank Galey, Dean, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Re: Entomology Graduate Program Review I would recommend this program be continued with additional review and study at the University of Wyoming with the following comments. This program has 4 faculty members; two of whom have significant extension/state service responsibilities. Despite that, the faculty have attracted significant grant funding and have been very productive in terms of publication. The program works closely at the PhD level mentoring students in the interdisciplinary Program in Ecology (“PIE). Courses for this program consistently attract appropriate enrollments and the material is important to students in other programs. In addition, graduates of the program fill an important niche in providing the state with expertise in invasive species management. Given the larger picture of having slightly below minimum graduation rates in other MS programs in the department, I would recommend investigating the consolidation of all of the MS programs in the department (ESM) under an agroecology or other similar rubric. Even if this is done, it would be difficult to see significant savings given the service requirements of two of the faculty members. The Doryctinae is a considerably diverse, poorly studied group of parasitoid wasps and one of the most diverse subfamilies within Braconidae. Taxonomic knowledge of this group remains highly incomplete, specially in the tropics. In Mexico, it has been reported as the subfamily with the highest number of recorded genera. A preliminary Barcoding study carried out in the Chamela region, located near the Mexican pacific coast in Jalisco, identified 185 barcoding species of Dorytinae assigned to 19 identified doryctine genera. This work updates the later study, representing a three years effort to assess the species richness of this subfamily for the Chamela region. Materials and methods. -
