Readings of Reading: Purpose and Process in Teaching Literature Gregory Grene Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2021 © 2020 Gregory Grene All Rights Reserved Abstract Readings of Reading: Purpose and Process in Teaching Literature Gregory Grene What do we hope to teach in teaching literature, and how can we best serve that purpose? These are questions that are no less urgent than they are fundamental, and should, in fact, be constantly in our minds as we engage in our practice. This discussion will entail a conversation between the theories behind, and the process of, teaching literature to adolescents, with a series of observations and thoughts rooted in specific texts and classes. I will start by querying how we define our mission, and then situate this debate in its historical context. I will look at how current influences are affecting this mission, before examining in a more granular sense how we attempt to trace progress and process. I will root this discussion in both theory and practice, utilizing my own teaching and extant student artifacts. I will argue that the elliptical nature of the process means that our assessment must be multifaceted, and that a mirror elliptical approach on our end can yield richer understandings, for both teacher and students. Jed Murr University of Washington Abstract The Unquiet Dead: Race and Violence in the “Post-Racial” United States J.E. Jed Murr Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Eva Cherniavksy English This dissertation project investigates some of the ways histories of racial violence work to (de)form dominant and oppositional forms of common sense in the allegedly “post-racial” United States. Centering “culture” as a terrain of contestation over common sense racial meaning, The Unquiet Dead focuses in particular on popular cultural repertoires of narrative, visual, and sonic enunciation to read how histories of racialized and gendered violence circulate, (dis)appear, and congeal in and as “common sense” in a period in which the uneven dispensation of value and violence afforded different bodies is purported to no longer break down along the same old racial lines. Much of the project is grounded in particular in the emergent cultural politics of race of the early to mid-1990s, a period I understand as the beginnings of the US “post-racial moment.” The ongoing, though deeply and contested and contradictory, “post-racial moment” is one in which the socio-cultural valorization of racial categories in their articulations to other modalities of difference and oppression is alleged to have undergone significant transformation such that, among other things, processes of racialization are understood as decisively delinked from racial violence. -

Although not all critics of religion are atheists, and atheists display diversity among themselves, A Wesleyan Open Inclusivist Approach to Religious Diversity and New Atheism argues that New Atheists are sufficiently similar to religious people to be fruitfully approached utilizing conceptual tools that pertain to religious diversity, interaction, and dialogue. -

Postcolonialism Cross-Examined Taking a strikingly interdisciplinary and global approach, Postcolonialism Cross-Examined reflects on the current status of postcolonial studies and attempts to break through traditional boundaries, creating a truly comparative and genuinely global phenomenon. Drawing together the field of mainstream postcolonial studies with post-Soviet postcolonial studies and studies of the late Ottoman Empire, the contributors in this volume question many of the concepts and assumptions we have become accustomed to in postcolonial studies, creating a fresh new version of the field. The volume calls the merits of the field into question, investigating how postcolonial studies may have perpetuated and normalized colonialism as an issue exclusive to Western colonial and imperial powers. The volume is the first to open a dialogue between three different areas of postcolonial scholarship that previously developed independently from one another: • the wide field of postcolonial studies working on European colonialism, • the growing field of post-Soviet postcolonial/post-imperial studies, • the still fledgling field of post-Ottoman postcolonial/post-imperial studies, supported by sideways glances at the multidirectional conditions of interaction in East Africa and the East and West Indies. Postcolonialism Cross-Examined looks at topics such as humanism, nationalism, multiculturalism, nostalgia, and the Anthropocene in order to piece together a new, broader vision for postcolonial studies in the twenty-first century. By including territories other than those covered by the postcolonial mainstream, the book strives to reframe the “postcolonial” as a genuinely global phenomenon and develop multidirectional postcolonial perspectives. The Lineage of Foresight Peter Hayward Introduction What does the explication of the Gebser structures of consciousness and the resultant worldviews of foresight offer to an understanding of individual foresight and of the possibility of developing a social form of foresight? The following propositions arise from the previous work and will be used to interrogate the literature of future studies, especially thirty-five years of the journal, Futures (1968-2003). • Foresight is an attribute of the development of individual consciousness. Instinct and emotion are the sensory modalities of primary consciousness and they produce a sense of the present. Imagination plays a pivotal role in the emergence of foresight as it moderates emotion and instinct and is one of the key enablers higher-order consciousness. Yet imagination appears to be progressively removed from foresight as the mental structures of consciousness become predominant. • The expression of foresight is mediated by the historical, cultural and social milieu in which it is practiced and what emerges is a ‘layering’ of foresight. The dynamic of foresight oscillates between an external and internal focus. The increasing complexification of the external world drives the foresight focus outward, from the observer, and the realisation of the immoderation in that external focus turns the focus inwards, in order to solve the immoderation or to re-scale the perspective. Over time the scope of the external focus becomes more circumspect, complexity causes a reduction in hubris, while the inward reflexivity becomes more encompassing. • Education, or the development of ‘knowledgability’, is an aspect of consciousness development. External knowledgability and education liberates foresight from exclusive rationality. -

THE MANIFEST DARKNESS: EXORCISM AND POSSESSION IN THE CHRISTIAN TRADITION by JAMIE HELEN PARSONS (Under the Direction of William Power) ABSTRACT The thesis of this paper is as follows: The belief in demonic possession is historically integral to the Christian faith, and the corresponding practice of exorcism is experiencing a modern resurgence. I will address the theology of possession and the practice of exorcism within the context of Christianity, with particular focus on Catholic exorcism and Protestant deliverance. The foundation for this study is developed through a discussion of theodicy and the evolution of adversarial personalities within the Christian tradition. Following this, an examination of the practice of exorcism, its role within the religious experience, its therapeutic benefits and hindrances, its primary controversies, and a few sample cases, will further develop the thesis. Egocentrics regard themselves and their own opinions or interests as being the most important or valid. Self-relevant information is seen to be more important in shaping one’s judgments than do thoughts about others and other-relevant information (Windschitl, Rose, Stalkfleet & Smith, 2008). Egocentric people are unable to fully understand or to cope with other people's opinions and the fact that reality can be different from what they are ready to accept. 1 In younger children 2 In adolescence 3 In adulthood 4 See also 5 References 6 External links According to Butterworth and Harris (1994) during childhood, the child is unable to distinguish between what is subjective (things that are strictly personal or private) and objective (what is public knowledge). Essentially, children believe that those who have a different perception than their own are either considered false or nonexistent. Jean Piaget (1896–1980) claimed that young children are egocentric. Piaget was concerned with two aspects of egocentricity in children; language and morality (Fogiel, 1980). He believed that egocentric children use language primarily for communication with oneself. Piaget observed that children would talk to themselves during play, and that this egocentric speech was merely the child’s thoughts (Junefelt, 2007). He believed that this speech had no special function; it was used as a way of accompanying and reinforcing the child’s current activity. He theorised that as the child matures cognitively and socially the amount of egocentric speech used would be reduced (Junefelt, 2007). -

He is the former officer-in-charge of the Terrorism Prevention Branch of the United Nations. He writes (in a personal communication to the author on June 7, 2014): “Humiliation often leads to feelings of revenge and the desire to exact vengeance for oneself or others with whom one identifies and this is a major driver for terrorism.” Shane Paul O’Doherty, a former IRA bomber turned pacifist, explains that his path to terrorism began when he was a child, and it began with humiliation, with him becoming aware that he was an “inferior” class of person. “In 1916, a bunch of poets and artists launched a revolution against the British from Ireland’s capital, Dublin. …The British executed the ringleaders of this ‘rising,’ and those deaths inspired a successful uprising against the British that ended with Ireland split in two. Suddenly there was a border, and Irish Catholics on the north side of it found themselves treated like second-class citizens.”2 The leading question of my global life mission is the following: We, as humankind, stand before unprecedented challenges. -
