  • Wakanda Rising: Black Panther and Commodity Production in the Disney Universe
Wakanda rising: Black Panther and commodity production in the Disney universe > Shenid Bhayroo Department of English, St Joseph’s University Philadelphia, Philadelphia, United States of America [email protected] ABSTRACT This article examines the superhero film Black Panther as a cultural commodity produced and distributed within an industrial capitalist system. The film has not only generated millions of dollars for the Disney Company, but has also stoked collective imaginations and energised the agency of audiences with its portrayal of the Afrofuturistic utopia, the kingdom of Wakanda, untouched by the ravages of colonialism and ruled by benevolent leaders endowed with superpowers. The film, is currently ranked first in terms of its lifetime gross revenues in the categories of comic book adaptation and superhero film and is the most successful of the Marvel Cinematic Universe characters’ films so far. Black Panther’s many firsts in the superhero genre reflect its non-financial feats: first to feature an almost entirely Black cast; first top-grossing film with an almost entirely Black cast; and biggest debut for an African American director (Disney 2018a). I demonstrate that while Black Panther showcases the work of African American filmmakers, storytellers and artists, and recognises Afrofuturism narratives, the film is also a commodity that sustains the system that produced it. Recognising and establishing the connections between commodity, cultural production and economics also offers a chance to identify opportunities for counter-hegemonies and challenges to the systemic erasure of Afro-histories. Keywords: Afrofuturism; Black Panther; commodity; Walt Disney Company; Marvel Comic Universe; political economy. Number 33, 2019 ISSN 2617-3255 page 01 of 20 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/2617-3255/2018/n33a3 Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) Introduction On 16 February 2018, four months after its record-setting opening weekend in the United States, global box office receipts forBlack Panther reached $1.4 billion.

Black Panther Transmedia: The Revolution Will Not Be Streamed Niels Niessen JCMS: Journal of Cinema and Media Studies, Volume 60, Issue 5, 2021, pp. 121-149 (Article) Published by Michigan Publishing DOI: https://doi.org/10.1353/cj.2021.0022 For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/788644 [ Access provided at 30 Sep 2021 00:43 GMT with no institutional affiliation ] Niels Niessen Black Panther Transmedia: The Revolution Will Not Be Streamed ABSTRACT The 2018 film Black Panther (Ryan Coogler) is a spectacular display of Black- ness on all levels of its production. But the film also tells the fairy tale of an extractive utopia in which technology is second nature, while the exploitation of bodies and ecosystems inherent to its high- tech mining economy remains unseen, much like in an Apple commercial. Only in light of the wider Black Panther transmedia universe (the comics authored by Ta- Nehisi Coates, Ken- drick Lamar’s soundtrack) does the film’s superhero texture yield to its full Afrofuturist potential: a speculative view of what Achille Mbembe calls the Becoming Black of the world. Once, the [American] Dream’s parameters were caged by technology and by the limits of horsepower and wind. But the Dreamers have improved themselves, and the damming of seas for voltage, the extraction of coal, the transmuting of oil into food, have enabled an expansion in plunder with no known precedent. And this revolution has freed the Dreamers to plunder not just the bodies of humans but the body of the Earth itself. The Earth is not our creation.

  • Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances by Bob Wolniak
Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances By Bob Wolniak ased initially on the Bob Fronczak list from Avengers Assemble and Avengers Forever websites. But unlike Mr. B Fronczak’s list (that stops about the time of Heroes Reborn) this is NOT an attempt at a Marvel continuity (harmony of Marvel titles in time within the fictional universe), but Avengers appearances in order in approx. real world release order . I define Avengers appearances as team appearances, not individual Avengers or even in some cases where several individual Avengers are together (but eventually a judgment call has to be made on some of those instances). I have included some non-Avengers appearances since they are important to a key storyline that does tie to the Avengers, but noted if they did not have a team appearance. Blue (purple for WCA & Ultimates) indicates an Avengers title , whether ongoing or limited series. I have decided that Force Works is not strictly an Avengers title, nor is Thunderbolts, Defenders or even Vision/Scarlet Witch mini- series, although each book correlates, crosses over and frequently contains guest appearances of the Avengers as a team. In those cases, the individual issues are listed. I have also decided that individual Avengers’ ongoing or limited series books are not Avengers team appearances, so I have no interest in the tedious tracking of every Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, or Hank Pym title unless they contain a team appearance or x-over . The same applies to Avengers Spotlight (largely a Hawkeye series, with other individual appearances), Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Vision, Wonder Man, Hulk, She-Hulk, Black Panther, Quicksilver, Thunderstrike, War Machine, Black Widow, Sub-Mariner, Hercules, and other such books or limited series.

Between the Reservation and Me: Race Identity in the Works of Ta-Nehisi Coates and Sherman Alexie by Cameron T. Green April, 2018 Director of Thesis: Wendy Sharer Major Department: English I will be analyzing the works of Ta-Nehisi Coates and Sherman Alexie, primarily as these works relate to how both authors tackle the issue of racial identity, as well its affect on their writing. In order to accommodate the requirements of an English Studies thesis, I will be discussing the themes of race identity in the writing of these two authors across two mediums each: one primarily textual and one primarily visual. I will also be looking at how their discussion of identity changes from the textual to visual medium. In the case of Ta-Nehisi Coates, I will predominantly be looking at his prose, specifically his seminal book Between the World and Me and how the author tackles race identity and race relations. Finally, to move to the more visual medium, I will be analyzing themes of race and identity in Coates’ take on the Marvel Comics superhero Black Panther in Coates’ Black Panther (2016), Black Panther: World of Wakanda, and Black Panther and the Crew. Sherman Alexie is arguably the most influential American Indian writer in history. His writing is nearly always grounded in issues of race and identity, specifically as an American Indian in contemporary America. I will first be looking at his fiction writing, including his short story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. I will be analyzing Alexie’s feature length script Smoke Signals, the first all-Indian movie, which is based on his collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven.
