Jared Goodrich Batman Takes Parade By Storm (How Comic Book Culture Shaped a Small City’s Halloween parade) History Research Seminar Spring 2020 1 On Saturday, October 26th, 2019, the participants lined up to begin of the Rutland Halloween Parade. 10,000 people came to the small city of Rutland to view the famed Halloween parade for its 60th year. Over 72 floats had participated and 1700 people led by the Skelly Dancers. School floats with specific themes to the Star Wars non-profit organization the 501st Legion to droves and rows of different Batman themed floats marched throughout the city to celebrate this joyous occasion. There have been many narratives told about this historic Halloween parade. One specific example can be found on the Rutland Historical Society’s website, which is the documentary called Rutland Halloween Parade Hijinks and History by B. Burge. The standard narrative told is that on Halloween night in 1959, the Rutland area was host to its first Halloween parade, and it was a grand show in its first year. The story continues that a man by the name of Tom Fagan loved what he saw and went to his friend John Cioffredi, who was the superintendent of the Rutland Recreation Department, and offered to make the parade better the next year. When planning for the next year, Fagan suggested that Batman be a part of the parade. By Halloween of 1961, Batman was running the parade in Rutland, and this would be the start to exciting times for the Rutland Halloween parade.1 Five years into the parade, the parade was the most popular it had ever been, and by 1970 had been featured in Marvel comics Avengers Number 83, which would start a major event later in comic book history. -

Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way. -

Petitioners, the children of the acclaimed comic-book artist/creator Jack Kirby (The Fantastic Four, X-Men, The Mighty Thor, The Incredible Hulk, etc.), served statutory notices of termination on the Marvel respondents regarding the key works Kirby authored as an independent contractor in 1958-63. Section 26, the “work for hire” provision of the 1909 Copyright Act, applicable to pre-1978 works, states simply: “The word author shall include an employer in the case of works made for hire.” For six decades, including in 1958-63, “employer” was duly given its common law meaning, and “work for hire” applied solely to conventional employment, not to independent contractors like Kirby. It follows then, in 1958-63 Kirby was the original owner of the copyrights to the works he authored and subsequently assigned to Marvel, and his children have the right to recapture his copyrights by termination of such assignments under 17 U.S.C.§304(c). -

SCIENTI FRICTION 1O THIS IS AN AMATEUR PULICATION AND MAY CONTAIN UNEXPECTED HAZARDS (1) There is no editor or publisher in the usual sense. That is, there is no one to whom huge mail sacks full of material are submit ted, and who then need only pick the best, or that which best con forms with the publication’s policy of what sells publications. Instead, any one at all -- in particular anyone whose writing would be summarily tossed into the ash can, with at best a brief hint of admiration for the perpetrator's chutzpah, by any editor worth the name — can have his inane gibberings "published" (if we may so degrade the worth of the term) in this bizarre collection of differ ently colored and differently textured sheets of paper which you hold in your hands. (2) There is no copy editor or proofreader. Therefore any unortho dox spelling or grammatical construction, whether due to gross ignorance (as is nearly always the case) or due to the so-called writer's egregious arrogance in thinking he owns the English language and can use it as he wants, will simply appear -- in actual ink, as if such abominations were merely symbols on paper rather than un thinkable, anathema, bad news, and the pits. (3) The various pages of this publication are produced not in hygenic industrial facilities, but, for the most part, in residences, or in the strangely painted back rooms of half-remodeled clubhouses, where the sheets of paper on which this noisome baloney is to appear sit around in half-opened packages likely to be dripped on by mad dogs, (4) There is no art director (and few who were even good at cutting things out of construction paper in kindergarten) to oversee such elementary matters as margins, page layout, typography and so on.
