Press Enquiries Louise Swanne Riva PR 0208 704 4500 [email protected] GEEJAM OPENS IN PORT ANTONIO, JAMAICA A Stylish Equilibrium Between Ultra Modern Technology and the Intrinsic Grace of Jamaica’s Organic Vibe Resonate at New Resort PORT ANTONIO, JAMAICA — Island Outpost, record mogul Chris Blackwell’s boutique hotel collection, announces the opening of Geejam in Port Antonio. Originally founded by music producer Jon Baker as a recording hideaway that played host to No Doubt, Common, India.Arie, Björk and Gorillaz, among others, Baker has now joined forces with fellow music industry veteran Steve Beaver to metamorphosize Geejam into an insider escape. The result? A stylish equilibrium between ultra modern technology and the intrinsic grace of Jamaica’s organic island vibe and sensibility. Located on six acres of the lush San San Estate, the property extends from the foothills of the John Crow and Blue Mountain chains to the Caribbean beachfront. Within immediate proximity is Frenchman’s Cove -- voted by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the world’s top five beaches. Just minutes away is the equally enchanting Blue Lagoon, while several other stunning beaches offer ideal spots for exploration. Guests can choose to take to the sea on a jet ski, scope out the waves on a surf safari, or simply chill out with a Champagne picnic in a private cove while rafting down the Rio Grande. The property also borders Drapers, which was a little known village until Gwen Stefani gave it props at the 2003 Grammy Awards after they recorded No Doubt’s multi-platinum album Hey Baby at Geejam.

  • The Jolly Boys Perform in the Bar at the Geejam Hotel, Baker Also Recognized That He Didn’T Have Forever to Capture the Aging Group on Record
JUNE 2011 ISSUE MMUSICMAG.COM Jamaica, performing often in hotels—where they became favorites of Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack pals during their visits to the country. In recent years the Boys have been regulars at Geejam Studios, a residential recording studio and resort hotel. That’s where studio founder and former Island label executive Jon Baker fell in love with mento. “This music talked about politics, rum addiction, sex,” Baker says. “I saw this music was very similar to rock ’n’ roll.” While watching the Jolly Boys perform in the bar at the Geejam Hotel, Baker also recognized that he didn’t have forever to capture the aging group on record. “I realized that three of the faces I had known around the ’hood weren’t there anymore,” he says. So he teamed with Jolly Boys percussionist Dale Virgo to produce Great Expectation, choosing songs they thought could help introduce mento to a younger generation. “We make sure it has the feel of the classic mento,” Virgo says, which means combining elements of African music, merengue, salsa and calypso, played on acoustic instruments. Derrick Henry, Albert Minott, Joseph Bennett William Richards William The first song tracked was Winehouse’s “Rehab.” “We looked for a song that had a retro feel that could work,” BBakeraker says. “We did ‘Rehab,’ and it was a THETHE JOLLY BOYSBOYS no-brainerno-brainer.. After Albert learned the lyrics, he just went in there and nailed it.” Though Melding a unique traditional folk style with Minott wasn’t initially familiar with some of unexpected new elements the songs, you’d never know it from the fi nished product.

BEFORE READING HIGHLIGHTED BLUE TEXTS ARE HYPER LINKS AND ALSO EVERY IMAGE THUMBNAIL Jon Baker wears a lot of hats. He’s one of Jamaica’s most respected hoteliers, as the co-founder of Geejam Collection. His flagship,Geejam Hotel, doubles as a recording studio and celebrity hotspot frequented by Katy Perry, Rihanna, Drake, and John Legend (among many others). Photographer: Wil Kaner He’s also an interior design buff who has taken on the restoration and reopening of Audrey Hepburn’s favorite villa in Port Antonio—an addi- tion to Geejam that’s just opened up for official bookings. He’s a music industry legend as the founder of Gee Street Records, helping develop the careers of Doug E. Fresh and P.M. Dawn. And if that weren’t enough, now he’s wearing a dramatically different hat: vintage car repairman. Photographer: Wil Kaner Baker insists that his latest calling was long lying dormant in his DNA. “I had a very interesting upbringing in London,” he told Bloomberg from his resort in Port Antonio. “My mum was a relatively well-known fashion designer in London in the ‘60s, and my dad would restore cars and take them to auction.” So after years of using his mother’s design influence in his hotel proj- ects, Baker had an epiphany. Why not restore some of Jamaica’s prized classic cars—many of which have fallen into terrible disrepair—and pre- serve a piece of the island’s history while adding an amenity for his hard-to-impress guests? Bob Marley’s 1976 Range Rover.
