The Late Rosh Hayeshiva of Ner Israel as remembered by his talmidim

The list consists qf hundreds qf names, and all of them have two things in common-perhaps the two are really one: They are talmidim (disci ples) qf Ner Israel-married men who had studied under Rabbi Yaakov Yitz chok Ruderman '"~l.And each and every one cannot be reached by telephone for several hours every day. They are all keeping their appointed times for learning. * * * Retumingfrom a recent convention qf Torah Umesorah, the National Organi zation for Hebrew Day Schools, Rabbi Ruderman remarked that he was amazed and gratified to have met so many Ner Israel alumni involved in chinuch (Torah education}, virtuallyfrom border to border.from coast to coast, in other lands. ... * * * Unyielding dedication to studying and teaching Torah is a trait that is not easily learned. Yet somehow those who were in the immediate presence of the late qf Ner Israel, Rabbi Ruderman, were changed. They learned to love Leaming, and theyfeel compelled to educate others in that same love.

The Jewish Obseroer, November 1987 7 Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchok Rudennan was among the pioneers who came to America before World War II to strivefor the impossible and achieve it: planting the seeds of Torah in the treife American soil.

The Jewish Obseroer, November 1987 27 that he must have known would offend his audience, and at his novel thesis that the stony-hearted, silent Pius was a courageous foe of the Holocaust. What a bully pulpit our Jewish leaders had given him to preach what was anathema to them and to humiliate his hosts! It was as if he had seized the moment to say that he would make his own speech es and speak his own mind. But they emerged from Miami boasting that they had forced the Pope to be concil iatory and to utter code words here and there that presaged a "new be ginning in Catholic-Jewish rela tions." As another old say ing puts it, "Spit in his face and he'll say it's raining." How ironic that secular, Reform and Conservative Jews who heap scorn upon the "galus, mah yafzs mentality" ofOr thodoxJews should themselves have been shown to be without clothes! if only thefool were not mine!

36 The Jewish Observer, November 1987 from yeshiva and was asked to be mashgiach in a factory in my local town. For forty dollars, the half day of , I work was well worth the effort. Of I course, I asked the Rav's assistant, 'What should I be looking for?" And was told, "Don't worry, just go there." I persisted, but was again told, "There's nothing to look for, just be there." While at the factory, I began snooping around. This was my first expertence in a factory and I found it very exciting. I noticed that at one point on the line. every ten minutes one of the workers would feed in a box of shortening to the machinery. On the floor, there were six boxes lined up. The first two were vegetable shortening, the next four were lard. When I asked the worker, 'What Is this lard? This is a Kosher produc tion run!" he responded, "Oh, golly. Rabbi Jr., you're rtght!" There's no doubt that these types of incidents are fairly common and we take it for granted that many fac tortes need more than a fifteen-year old novice sitting around.
