Keywords: Seiching, tides, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Indian Ocean Abstract—Short-period sea level changes around the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues in the central Indian Ocean have been analysed to determine the favoured seiche periods. The largest amplitudes are found inside the harbours of Port Louis, Mauritius (7 and 20 minutes) and Port Mathurin, Rodrigues (25 minutes), but these amplitudes are much smaller just outside the harbours, and the characteristic periods are found only locally, confirming that local topography controls the periods of the seiching. The extent and energising of these seiching phenomena calls for further investigation. Associated seiche currents, potentially much stronger than tidal currents, could influence harbour shipping movements. Analysis of the sea level data showed that there are significant spatial variations in the amplitudes and phases of the tides around Mauritius Island, but the around-island tidal variations are much smaller for Rodrigues Island. Duvat Department of Geography, Institute of Littoral and Environment, La Rochelle University, France Abstract In Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the questions of coastal erosion and sea defence structures raise specific issues that this paper will discuss in light of the analysis of the situations in Seychelles and Mauritius. These questions relate back to the role of post-colonial development strategies and have close ties with tourism as beaches have an important economic value. Thus, beach erosion has become a major concern both for the authorities, which lack well-documented analyses as well as the technical and financial capacities for developing appropriate strategies, and for tourism operators. The lack of consistent policies often leads to the systematic use of hard engineering structures without any consideration either for coastal dynamics or socioeconomic factors. Nevertheless, in western Indian Ocean states, beach erosion management has evolved positively for the past 15 years under the influence of internal and external factors. The respective roles of the Regional Environment Programme of the Indian Ocean Commission and of the initiatives of tourism operators in recent progress will be highlighted. Hydrographic Office and Services 1.1. Introduction Mauritius is an Island nation in the Indian Ocean with a land area of 2040 Square Kilometres and a large Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 2.3 million Square Kilometres. In 2011, the United Nations Commission on Limits of Continental Shelf endorsed joint management of 396,000 square kilometres of seabed in the Mascarene region by Republic of Mauritius and Republic of Seychelles. Being signatory to International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Convention of Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), Mauritius has national and international responsibilities to provide necessary services for enhancing safety of navigation in its area of jurisdiction. 1.2. Cooperation between India and Mauritius Republic of Mauritius and Republic of India entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on hydrography in 2005. The MoU has been subsequently extended at periodic intervals. The MoU provides for cooperation in the field of hydrography between the two countries, assistance in production of navigational charts, training of staff and surveys in the EEZ, ports and harbours of Mauritius. 1.3. Hydrographic Infrastructure The Hydrographic Unit of Ministry of Housing and Lands is the nodal agency for hydrographic surveying and nautical charting in Mauritius. The unit was established in 2013 under the aegis of MoU with India in order to develop hydrographic infrastructure and expertise. The unit has developed capacity to survey coastal and nearshore areas critical for shipping and surface navigation, carry out underwater search operations for wreck/ obstruction detection and survey shallow lagoons surrounding Mauritius and outer island territories for supporting economic and tourism related activities.

INTRODUCTION History of sea-level measurement In Mauritius, sea-level recording is available but in discontinuous mode. Information obtained from the Ministry of Housing, Lands, Town and Country Planning, indicates comprehensive levelling surveys were conducted all over island in 1881 by the H.M.S Navy and in 1902/03 by Mr. W.H. Harrison of the Colonial Office. Most of the mountains, hills and important places in Mauritius were measured to the nearest foot above the MSL. However, no details on the bench mark used for reference purposes could be found. On the other hand, from the Bench Marks surveying book of the Public Works Department (now the Ministry of Works), it was found that four bench marks were established in March 1915 in Port Louis. One of the bench marks which is relevant to this study was a brass plate fixed at + 6.096 m (20 feet) AMSL against a wall situated inside the yard of the Treasury building, Port Louis. The first hint about the existence of a tide-gauge was obtained from the Mauritius Marine Authority. Apparently the zero of this side staff was selected in 1929. It corresponded to the level of the mean low at spring tides which was obtained by taking the average of the low water spring tide levels over a 48 month period.

The Indian Ocean Islands rely on tourism for economic development. The climate is important for the tourism in the Indian Ocean Islands since the tourism is mainly based on sun, sea and sand tourism which rely on warm sunny conditions. The aim of this study is to analyse the content of TripAdvisor reviews spanning the period 2012 to 2016 for five Indian Ocean Islands namely: Comoros, Reunion, Seychelles, Mauritius and Maldives to determine the relative importance of suitable climatic conditions for tourist satisfaction.
