2. [Antarctica][ south pole][ Falkland Islands][ Crozet Islands][ expedition][ exploration][ Richard Byrd][ Raymond Edward Priestley][ Roald Amundsen][ international law][ shipwrecks] A Collection of Materials of the Promotional and Scholarly Records of Antarctic Exploration, predominantly 1908-1936. Antarctica. 1877-1964. A collection of over thirty-five (35) items relating to Antarctic Exploration. The collection dates from 1877-1964, with the bulk of materials from 1908-1936. The collection includes scholarly articles and publications as well as government reports about expeditions, various promotional material for exploration fundraising events or sold after the expeditions such as books or films. These periodicals and promotional materials include numerous images from photographs and first hand accounts of Antarctic Expeditions. Also included are three letters, two from various societies, such as the Royal Geographic Society and the Scott Polar Research Institute, discussing various scholarly articles on Antarctica published by previous polar explorers. The third letter is a short communication from the Richard E. Byrd Antarctic Exploration II Team, prior to its departure discussing the expedition's library. There are several unique items in the collection is a menu with hand finishing for a banquet thrown by the Mayor of New York City for Richard E. Byrd before his Second Antarctic Expedition (1834-1935), and an etching of Byrd done by Waltet Tittle. A rather striking item in the collection, due to is psychedelic cover in green and pink, is a playbill from the Carlton Theatre in London during its run of Paramount's exclusive film of Byrd's First Expedition. Another highlight in the collection is one of the scholarly articles: a typescript of Raymond Priestley's article "The Psychology of Exploration" which reflects on his part in the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), and discusses the psychological effect the expeditions add on the individual, such as depression, hallucinations, and polar madness. The article is divided up into four parts: 'The Voyage South from Civilization', 'Winter and Summer at Winter Quarters', 'Spring and Summer Sledging' and 'The Catastrophic Phase (May or May Not Occur)'. In the article he recounts Boston Book Fair 2019 – Part 1 6 [email protected]

several demonstrating the toll these expeditions can have. "When crossing MacMurco Sound, one of the sailors reported a sledge party approaching from the direction of Hut point. Campbell and I walked rapidly toward the party when suddenly its leader drew aside and commenced to semaphore vigorously. We could neither of us make out anything more than disjointed letters, but at Campbell's request I endeavored to establish communication. The signaler, however appeared to be quite demented and we soon gave up our attempt and endeavored to close with the party by walking. As we approached we grew more and more doubtful of their identity and finally, they proved to be emperor penguins. Our desire for relief, and perhaps, some mirage , had converted a small body of four emperors in a perfect facsimile of a sledge party."

3. [American civil war][ business history][ correspondence][ shipping][ merchant][ trade][ new York][ new Orleans][ tariff] George Clement Lord. A Collection of 21 Letters belonging the Lord's Family Shipping Company. Kennebunk, ME and Boston, MA. 1836-1861. A collection of twenty-one (21) letters belonging to the Lord Family of Kennebunk, ME, mostly regarding their shipping company, Boston Book Fair 2019 – Part 1 8 [email protected]

which was also based in Boston, MA. The letters date from 1836 to 1861, and are mostly addressed to George C. Lord. Though a few of the letters are from employees or customers of the company the majority are from family members involved in the business. These members (and their relationship to George) are: his father, Captain George Lord, his brothers Edward W Lord and Charles Edward Lord, and later, his son, Charles E. Lord. A variety of shipping business subjects are covered in the letters, such as the types of cargo and their value (some goods mentioned are cotton, tallow, logwood, salt, railway supplies, and coal), several legal cases for the settlement of claims due to cargo loss, the sale of ships, insurance policies on the ships and cargo, various ship Captains employed by them, ship routes, and the various political policies that effect the shipping business such as the Letters of Marque issued by Confederate President Jefferson Davis that effectively sanctioned piracy as legal. Some of the ships mentioned in the letters are: "International', 'Josephine', 'G. W. Brown', 'Regulator', 'Crimea', 'Golden Eagle', 'Hayes', 'Royal', and 'York'. The names of the ships owned by the company often reflect the names of family members or past favored employees. Also discussed are various family matters, such as relatives' health or present life. One letter from a customer discusses the transport of 'fleshpots of Egypt', which could alternatively mean either actual pots of meat or prostitutes. While in the end the author does seem to be referring to actual meat, the terminology he uses prior to that is more than slightly ambiguous. The last two letters in the collection are from 1861, on the eve of the American Civil War and discusses the author's, Charles E. Lord, displeasure at the hypocrisy of the North who no longer want a war when it hits them in their pocket books, as well as the effect the war is having on the shipping business. Four of the letters come with corresponding envelopes, however the majority of the letters were folded paper with stampless post. The collection is arranged chronologically, one letter is missing a date. Below are some excerpts from the letters:

"Thirdly your sympathy and sorrow expressed for my having had to pay twice the 3/9 to the port to look after the fleshpots of Egypt I thank you for. But surely you who no doubt go nightly and perhaps daily down into that very Montezuma [?]of Egypt enjoying and all the luxuries of that balmy, soft, and delicious land - ought not to chasten a poor old fellow who can no longer journey there and can only now enjoy the remembrance of the part by scenting fleshpots of that magical country in the shape of a thigh of pork." - Daniel Nason to George C. Lord, December 2, 1847

"Please ask father to write us how much insurance they will want on the Wm Brown, we will cancel present policies and take out new ones for the voyage. Present policies expire Dec 1st - should think $36000 on the ship and either 10 or 15000 on charter out. They must bear in mind that the commission on the homeward charter are to be paid lost or not safe - say $1500(sic)- perhaps $12000 on charter would be enough. No news here. we notice the Henry Mann [?] seen Aug 31 - Lat. 28 South of the Island of Madagascar, then out 70 days - at that rate she would not be in Rotterdam before Christmas - but we hope to hear of her at Falmouth by the steamer Boston Book Fair 2019 – Part 1 9 [email protected]

due tomorrow morning." - George C Lord to his brother Edward W. Lord, September 1, 1852.

"In regards to business affairs I have nothing, I am sorry to say, very interesting or cheering to relate. The 'International' is in Dock discharging- has her between docks/decks? now about clear. While she was laying in the river they were obliged to keep one pump going most of the time to keep her free of water and when at sea in rough weather both, but since she has been in Dock, she leaks but very little - say one to two inches per hour.... Political affairs in the seem to have assumed a more peaceful aspect and yet as to the future we are as much in the dark as ever. I am sorry to see that the passage of the Tariff Bill has caused a great change in the minds of the people here - their sympathies seem to have made a complete change from the North to the South. It is very easy to see how deep seated their philanthropy is for the poor downtrodden slave when their own interests are at all encroached upon. I think the change in the Tariff just at this time was a very unwise thing with the North and one which will fail to have its desired effect. It will operate against the commercial interests of the North and be of no benefit to the manufacturing interest. Foreign merchandise with fine it way into the country through the Southern ports and Canada without paying the high duty and that the whole object of the tariff will be frustrated [?] . Therefore in my opinion, if the new administration wish to save their 'credit and bacon', they had better abandon the Tariff scheme at once and look to some other source of revenue." - Charles E. Lord to his father, George C. Lord, April 2, 1861

"The truly deplorable state of the anarchy which our one peaceful and happy country is now in makes all news coming from there of thrilling interest, though saddening to the hear to contemplate. It is comforting to now that the people of the North are so united and that party lines are so completely obliterated. If war must come I hope the President will bring all the resources of the country into the field and make on bold strike at the Rebels. It is too late now for any half way measures. they have desperate men to deal with and desperate measures must be used to put them down or the country is lost and ruined further... The underwriters at large are now asking from 1% to 10 % additional premium on cargo in American ships, depending upon their position or account of the Letters of Marque issued by Jeff Davis. " - Charles E. Lord to his father, George C. Lord, May 4, , 1861

4. [Quasi War][ shipping][ mercantile trade][ market value] Captain John Thissell. A collection of nineteen (19) relating to John Thissell a Captain and sailing master from Beverly, MA. The letters

Boston Book Fair 2019 – Part 1 10 [email protected]

are either written to or from Captain John Thissell and date from 1779-1809 with the bulk of materials from dating from 1801-1802.

Between 1799-1800 Thissell was captain of a brig (sailing vessel with two square-rigged masts) called the Rover, and in 1801-1802 he was Captain of a ship called The Mary. Both ships were owned by Israel Thorndike (1755-1832) who was an American merchant, politician and industrialist also from Beverly, MA. Thorndike made his fortune in trade, first concentrating in merchant routes along the North American Coast and in the Caribbean before breaking into the Chinese trade.

The bulk of the materials in this collection specifically deal with the trade conducted during and immediately after the Quasi-War, an undeclared war between the United States and France from July 1798 to September 1800. This unofficial war was caused by several factors, one of which was the fact that the United States was trading with Britain, whom France was at war with at the time. The French in response authorized privateers to attack and seize American shipping vessels. This dangerous environment caused a rise in market prices that fell shortly after a peace treaty was reached.

Several letters in this collection deal with just that, as Thissell had set sail immediately prior to news of this peace treaty. In response to the news Thorndike wrote several concerned letters about the value of the cargo now that their fortunes had turned. Additionally, there are several letters from a market in Naples writing about the current prices for a variety of goods. The last letter in this collection dates from 1809, and is written by Captain Thissell to his wife from St. Lucia. This most

likely was one of, if not the last letters his wife received from him, as he died in St. Lucia that same year. One of the letters is a hand copied duplicate, with the original addressed to Genova and the duplicate sent to Barcelona. This was done by the author of the letter as he was unsure of which port Captain Thissel would sail to. One of the letters is in French. Below are excerpts from the letters:

“Since my last of the 25th which informed you all of the particulars of my business and that I had landed 16 or 17 hundred quintals of my fish, I have to inform you that I have landed all my fish, it weighed out 3119 quintals and expect to have to make in deduction on the verry [sic] much wetted and broken fish, the quantity cannot as yet ascertain.” - Captain John Thissell to Israel Thorndike, February 6, 1801

“Since you sailed we have accounts of Peace betwixt England and France, which will of course totally alter all commercial arrangements therefore your object must be to conduct the business of the Mary voyage so as to loose as little as possible, you had therefore better sell your fish whenever you can git [sic] a tolerable offer for it, and as for your dry goods you had better sell them 15 pr. below their invoice price rather than leave them unsold, but if you can’t sell them you must leave them in the hands of some good reproachable House directing them sold as soon as a good price can be obtained for them, and take as large an advance on them as you can obtain, and if good Spanish bills can be bot [sic] on good terms invest your fund in them...” - Israel Thorndike to Captain John Thissell , November 19, 1801

“By directions from our good friend Mr. Israel Thorndike of Beverley, we are desired to hand you these few lines, to inform you of the state of our Market for your cargo, which we hear consist in East India white cotton pieces, some fish, nankeens of one box, mail for Genoa and our market. We beg leave to inform you that East India cotton goods will not answer to bring here, excepting however the nankeens for which we may always obtain $1.25, say one Spanish Dollar and a quarter piece, in quality of yellow short of a better price as the season advance- your fish in quality of small cod would obtain at present $9, say nine Spanish Dollars per quintal English, there is no sale also for spices here excepting pepper. The above quolations [sic] are on board or free of duties.”- Naples Market proprietor to Captain John Thissell, December 22, 1801

“Dear and honored Wife-This is the first opportunity I have had since I left home to inform you of our unfortinate [sic] voyage, we have enjoyed a tollorable [sic] good state of health since we left you, and I am in hopes that you and our little children, Mothers, Brothers, Sisters, and all of our friends have enjoyed the same, and I am in hopes that in God, in due time we shall meet again. We arrived at St. ??Pears Martineaua??, after a voyage of 43 days and stayed their three hours only, fish in this island after paying charges is but 1 ½ dollars per quintal… I have nothing moar [sic] at present to inform you only my best wishes for your health and happiness and that the time will soon arrive when we shall meet again. I am your true and loving husband until death.” - Captain John Thissell to his wife, St. Lucia, July 13, 1809

(#20128003) $1,300.

General wear. Captain John Thissell was born in 1773 to Captain John Thissell, Sr (1749-1897) and Lucy Lovett (1756-1834) in Beverly, MA. He followed in his fathers footsteps and became a sea captain. He married Rebecca Ober (1774-1850) and had approximately six children: John Thissell III (1800-1829), Benjamin Thissel (1802-1848), George Thissel (1803-1831), Boston Book Fair 2019 – Part 1 12 [email protected]

9. [diary][ Georgetown][ Perkins school for the blind][ poetry][ music][ concerts][ daily life] Charlotte Alice Osgood Haskell. Diary of Charlotte A Osgood of Georgetown, MA. Georgetown, MA. 1885- 1889. A diary of a young woman from Georgetown, MA, named Charlotte Osgood. Her family were prominent in local society. Covering four years, the journal starts with almost daily entries. As the years progress, the entries diminish in frequency, but are always picked up again during some of the exciting times in Charlotte's life. For example her trip to Provincetown in August of 1886. Charlotte also toured at Perkins School for the Blind and met Laura Bridgmen (the first American blind and deaf individual to be educated). The rest of her entries generally start with a note on the current weather, and detail her activities for the day. Such as who visited who, and where she went. Her daily activities consisted of a variety of meetings, such as church meetings, choir meetings, and missionary meetings. Charlotte loved music and often went to concerts and plays. Some of the quotes do revolve around the theme of government, perhaps an influence of her father. Towards the end of the journal, Charlotte has recorded a variety of her favorite songs, poems, and quotes, as well as a few recipes (for Lemon Sherbet and pop over. Below are a few excerpts from the journal.

"Started south for Boston, about ten I saw Lanceirs and Major Perkins. Had a splendid time at the Blind School. Saw Mr. Anofer and Laura Bridgeman, left around 12:30. Dined at Marstou on drek [?} and banana fitters Went to the Museum and saw Devin Bouciciult in "the Lift", enjoyed it very much." - February 22, 1886

"In the afternoon, we went to Long Point and had beautiful time, took off my shoes and stockings, water awful cold. Singing in evening." - August 23, 1886, Provincetown Trip

"When things go right, things come right for them" - Quote from The Squire of Sandal-Side by Amelia Edith Huddleston Barr

"Judgment is a factor of government, so long as gov. continues, judgment goes and is going on all the time..."

[color meeting][ African American][ yorktown][ health][ woman's health][ correspondence][ church][ religion] A Pair of Letters from to her Family discussing her trip to Yorktown, particularly her experience at a "Colored Meeting" Yorktown. January 1869. A pair of letters from Emily to her family keeping them appraised of her trip to Yorktown [NY] in January 1869. The two letters are written within a day of one another, with one addressed to her parents and one to her brother. The family's last name is not mentioned. The letters are jam-packed with the events of daily life. She is somewhat ill perhaps with consumption and speaks often of her health. Additionally religion plays a significant role in her writing. Of note in the letters is Emily's description of a 'colored meeting' she went to, which was a church service for African Americans. Emily writes about how the 'spirit' moved the church members to what she perceived as frightening noises and groans, and that due to this she wouldn't feel comfortable going to another service. The letters also discuss Emily's health and

her fear that she might have bronchitis. As well as updates on her family. Measures 7 ¾” x 4 ¾”. Below are a few excerpts from the letters.

"I went to a colored meeting one evening and does seem to me I could not go again, they hold it late about 10 o'clock and the spirit moves them to such noises and actions, sometimes they would screach [sic] and shot and sing and groan till it seemed like confusion confounded. I pittied [sic] them for there is no white-folks church to learn from and I was almost frightened so I did not get to sleep until late that night." - Emily to her parents, January 12, 1869

"Samuel saw an old French Dr. on the boat- when he went to B. - and told him how I was, said he should call it a dry consumption. He said worse than Dr. Powers. Sad I ought to stay here a year and then not stay where it was a cold winter. Said he thought if I could have the chills it would change the course of the disease... I think our little bute [sic] is getting to be a little fast, got so she runs away from school (well seems to me I should have one of the boys go out to help her from running away - Little boys I mean) It seems Emilus likes me best and don't hesitate to tell of it - I know Abbie must feel bad to have him say anything." - Emily to her Brother, January 11, 1869

Marginalia in every blank space. From a margin note:

The column, made from bronze of canons captured at the Battle of Austerlitz, is shown crowned with the figure of Napoleon in military uniform, as reinstated by Louis-Phillipe on July 29 1833, the third anniversary of the July Revolution. Most probably it was this occasion that prompted this peep-show's publication. There is a German plagiarism of this peepshow in the David Robinson Collection. 23. [democrat][ political][ budget][ money][ Albert Palmer][ government][ campaign][ republican] How the Democrats Have Spent the Public Moneys of the City of Boston. Boston, MA. 1883. A booklet that compares and contrasts the "expenditures of the Board of Aldermen, Common Council, and principal committee of the City Government, for refreshments and carriages" between 1882 and 1883. The booklet starts off with an address by Boston Mayor Albert Palmer (1831-1887) condemning the amount spent on entertainment, before detailing out the budget for two different parties thrown by the Board of Alderman. According to a synopsis of one of the parties, each guest must have had about two quarts of liquor and over ten cigars each in order for the budget to check out. The booklet ends with the statement: "The men who have so disregarded their duties and obligations as city officials will only continue their nefarious work, should they be able to get their hands into the coffers of the State." 12 pages, included printed wrappers. String binding. OCLC 11 (Oct 2019). Measures 8 ½” x 5 ½”. (#29017661) $75.

24. [politics][ government][ state government][ Tammany hall][ budget][ corruption] The Democratic Record: Disloyalty to the Constitution! Sympathy with Rebellion! Fraud! Theft! Robbery and Plunder by the Million! The Mission of the Party Consummated by Tammany. New York. [1871- 1872]. A political flyer condemning the corruption by the Democratic Party, and more specifically the Tammany Hall and its Grand Sachem, William M. Tweed (1823-1878). Tammany Hall, alternately called the Tammany Society, Society of St. Tammany, the Sons of St. Tammany, or the Colombian Order, was a political organization in New York that was first founded in 1786. Tammany Hall had particular influence over the Democratic Party and New York City and New York State Politics. Tammany Hall was also know for its graft and political corruption, but even more so under the rule of William M. Tweed, who supposedly swindled the New York tax payers out of $25 to $45 million dollars, though later more recent estimates have placed that number as high as $200 million. This 8 page flyer, most likely printed on behalf of the Republican party, details out the expenditures of the Democratic Party between 1860-1870. What is interesting is that the flyer never names Tweed specifically, but rather the Democratic Party and Tammany Hall. The flyer however does point out some corruption on the part of the Republican Party, but, it continues on to assert that "a few dishonest men may have crept into position where for a season they exercised their dishonest Boston Book Fair 2019 – Part 1 27 [email protected]

purposes against the public funds; but this much is safe to say: all the moneys stolen by Republican officials during the ten years and half of the rule of that party , is not sufficient to pay the annual interest of the amounts stolen by the Democratic national administrations or upon the sums plundered from the people of the Country and State of New York during the last few years." The flyer ends with this last argument against the Democratic Party: "This is the Democratic record, made up from its own history. It ever has been, and it ever will be, a thieving, depredating, unprincipled cabal, whose only impulse has been self-aggrandizement, though it cost of national treasure, life and honor to accomplish its nefarious ends. It cannot change its disposition and policy in this respect any more than forty thieves could refrain from robbery when temptation afforded an opportunity. In view of history, no honest Republican, no candid Democrat, can vote for or give countenance to Democratic nominees, no matter how insignificant the trust for which they have been named." 8 folded pages. Paper has rough edges. OCLC 2 (Oct 2019, one is dated 1871 the other 1872, but appears to be the same item) Measures 9 ¼” x 6" (folded), 18 ½” x 11 ¾” (#29017720) $150.

25. [train][ tunnel][ fundraising. government][ state government][ rail road][ state funding] Reasons Why Boston Should Aid in the Construction of the Hoosac Tunnel. Alfred Mudge & Son. Boston, MA. 1860. A political booklet hoping to sway public opinion to supporting state funding for the construction of the train tunnel called the Hoosac Tunnel. The booklet asserts eleven different reasons in support of this idea, such as "The principle is right in itself" and "All towns along the line of the road have subscribed". Additionally there are several printed copies of letters of support of the project, and its Chief Engineer, Herman Haupt, from a variety of individuals. For example, J. Edgar Thomson, President of Pennsylvania Rail Road Company who states "I learned that my friend, H. Haupt Esq., finds some difficultly in securing Boston cooperation in carrying through the Hoosac Tunnel from a want of confidence in the completion of the work. I am surprised at this feeling of distrust in Boston, the seat of American enterprise, when we consider the practicability of the work and its immense advantages to that city when completed. I should have supposed that it would have been a project that met with special favor." There was strong opposition to state funding of the project lead by the Western Railroad Company and it's President Chester W. Chapin (1798-1883). Chapin was able to block the measure in 1861, which resulted in the bankruptcy of Haupt and an incomplete tunnel. Fortunately the state did step in a few years later and completed the tunnel. 8 pgs., including wrappers. Thread binding. OCLC 3 (Oct 2019). Measures 9" x 5 ¾”. (#29017329) $85.

28. [right of property][ wood engraving][ poetry] Hulet Saw Mill, Poem Published on Broadside. Cosmopolite. Connecticut. 1854. A poem entitled Hulet Saw-Mill, which discusses both the mill, its owner, and how his estate was argued over after his death by his heirs. The poem itself its set to the tune of "King Solomon" and was written in September 1854 for Hulet Depot. At the top of the poem is a wood cut of a homestead, and there is also an ornamental border. Below is an excerpt of the beginning of the poem:

"My fancy took a sudden flight, while I lay on my bed, To the region where old Mashentuck lifts up its sullen head; The passage made me wary. I sat me down to rest Where many a winter rattle snake has made his winter's nest. While there I sat musing upon the lonely hill, My senses were attracted by the sound of Hulet's mill; I looked out to the southward, across the old shrub-plain, I saw the saw-mill tenders all marching in a train. There were a mixed-up multitude, as you may understand, The looked some like the ancient tribes, once in the holy land; They seemed to me like vagabonds while marching o'ver the ground, And not a Priest or Levite among them could be found."

A the base of the poem is the line "Printed not a hundred miles from Chepatchet", a town in Rhode Island. However, considering that Rhode Island is only approximately 37 miles by 48 miles, it is unlikely that this broadside was printed in that state. Indeed the OCLC entries list the place of publication as "[Connecticut?]". OCLC 3 (Oct 2019). Measures 15 ½”.x 5 ½”. (#29017690) $400.

Age toning. Separation at folds. General wear.

Below is an excerpt from each song/poem:

30. [][ battle of lake erie][ Oliver Hazard Perry][ Jesse Elliott][ naval battle][ poem][ patriotic poetry][ patriotism] Perry's Victory, Broadside Poem. No. 42, North Main, Providence, RI. [1815]. A poem about the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, and more specifically about the hero of that navy battle Commander Oliver Hazard Perry (1785- 1819), and his fellow naval officer, Captain Jesse Duncan Elliott (1782-1845). Perry is famously remembered for shouting "Don't Give Up the Ship", when the ship he was on, the U.S.S. Lawrence, was taking heavy fire. One of the lines in the poem states in regard to Perry and Elliott, "O had you but seen those noble commanders, Embracing each other when the conflict [was] over." These lines are highly ironic as there is significant evidence to support that neither of the men like each other and in fact that Perry felt that Elliott acted as coward during the battle. There were official charges filed, but nothing came of it. Below is an excerpt from the poem:

"Ye tars of Columbia give ear to my story, Who fought with brave Perry where cannons did roar, Your valour has gained you an immortal glory, A fame that shall last until time is no more! Columbian tars are the true sons of Mars, They rake fore and aft when they fight on the deep On the head of Lake Eire commanded by Perry They caused many Britains to take their last sleep."

A patriotic song for July 4th written in twenty numbered stanzas., four lines each. The poem doesn't focus on specific battles too much, but rather the bravery of our men and their Commanders, like George Washington. The song is printed in two columns with as small decorative border in-between the two. Below are excerpts from the poem:

"Their hostile banners were display'd, And Yankee doodle then was play'd; "Brave countrymen, let's drop a tear But soon their troops in blood did wade, To th' memory of each friend so dear, And quickly left their station." Who fell without a dread or fear, - Stanza 4 Defending of their Nation.

This particular version of "The Death of General Wolfe" is eleven (11) stanzas long and has been paired with the song "Captain Mulligan." Major General James Wolfe (1727-1759) was a British Army officer who is fought in the French and Indian War (otherwise known as the Seven Years' War), and was the hero of the Battle of Quebec (also called the Battle of the Plains of Abraham) where he died in battle. The second ballad on the broadside, "Captain Mulligan", does not appear to have been about a historical figure, but rather a fictional Irish sea captain and his love, Kitty O'Shea. Below is an excerpt from each ballad:

"This gallant youth did cross the ocean, To free America from her invasion; He landed at Quebec with all his party, The city to attack, both brave and hearty" - Excerpt from "The Death of General Wolfe"

"Love is a plague by night and by day, when that post you run your skull again; Love it was, or Kitty O'Shea That bothered the heart of Captain Mulligan..." - Excerpt from "Captain Mulligan"

January 9,1861. The Portland Pleasure Boat, also called , was a reform journal publican that was edited and published Boston Book Fair 2019 – Part 1 35 [email protected]

by Jeremiah Hacker, a Quaker Reformer and journalist. Hacker used the journal to promote his ideas on abolition, land reform, juvenile justice, organized religion (against), prison reform. It was a widely circulated publication between its founding in 1845 till 1862 when Hacker started preaching of pacifism at the start of the American Civil War. Due to the unpopularity of his ideas as many thought that the war was unavoidable and moral justifiable, between 1864-1866 he renamed the journal 'The Chariot of Wisdom and Love'. In 1866, Hacker moved from Maine to , due to the 'Great Fire' in Portland Maine in 1866, and there he returned to boat themed titles such as "Hacker's Pleasure Boat." This particular issue was printed on January 9, 1861, and includes a variety of articles, letters to the editor and short poems such as a sermon by Henry Ward Beecher, another sermon by Hacker himself, and an excerpt from an 1854 issue of "Friends' Intelligencer". Additionally there is a piece from the Christian Advocate called "Succotash In the Bowl", which is about a Native American who converted to Christianity. Another section call 'National Hall' where national news issues are discussed, which in 1861 are various issues that would lead up to the Civil War. Below are some excerpts from the issue:

"The South seem as unwilling as they every have been to hear both sides of their favorite schemes. Nay, they have so long brooded over their peculiar ideas, that they appear seriously to doubt whether any other views than their won can reasonably be said event to exist." - 'Hear Both Sides', E. Child, National Hall Section

"She who loves show is unqualified to show love. We should, therefore, avoid contracting an intimate friendship with a female, whose love of the gay and the frivolous has closed her heart to influence of heroic virtue." - Proverb, Pg. 2, unknown author

"Friend Hacker: You ask why it is that you get no more subscribers to the Boat than the small number that now take it. I think the reason is that you tell too much truth.- Most all people have some error in faith or practice, and by preaching the whole truth you are apt to hit nearly everyone. Be a little more careful; don't attack popular sins nor advocate such ultra notions about woman's rights; put in some paying advertisements of patent medicines, and I think you would find it pay better.... the fact is friend H., your carry some much sail on the Boat that most people dare not take passage in her. Some say that she will land her passengers in h--l [hell]." - Wade Ilsley, a letter to the editor, Captain's Office Section

"Every man has some prescription to offer for healing the breach between the free and the slave states... Let the slave states go peaceably if they will, give them all the forts within their territory, throw in all the implements of war that cannot be changed to implements of agriculture or other useful purposes and thank the for taking the infernal thins out of the way; then let the free State become Christian in the practice as they now are in profession, and they will become a model nation, giving light to all the world. A war between the north and south would be ruination of both; it would take centuries to recover from the injury done to either party. If the South is determined to destroy itself, leave it to its fate, after doing all you peaceably can do in the spirit of love to save it. In a few years the slaves will cut the throats of the whites and then you can stretch out your government again over the territory." - 'Healing the Breach', J. Hacker, Government Hall Section

Several men in Baltimore, who considered themselves "tipplers" rather than "drunkards"•, attended a temperance lecture, intending to scoff and then report on the meeting for the amusement of their friends in Chase's Tavern. Instead, the evangelist made such a deep impression on them that they decided to quit drinking together and to form a society to cure intemperance to rehabilitate drunkards and inebriates. On 5 April 1840 these six poor drunkards met in a grog shop in that city, took the pledge to reform, and organized a society, to which they gave the name Washingtonian.• (from Washingtonian Pocket Companion)

The six founders were David Anderson (blacksmith), Archibald Campbell (silversmith), John F. Hoss (carpenter), James McCurley (coachmaker), William K. Mitchell (tailor), and George Steers (wheelwright). (from Crowley)

Paper lore (tales told by one collector to another) considers the illustrated paper doll [with six costumes pictured] from the late Mrs. Waldron's Winterthur collection to be Queen Victoria. The tie frame is correct, and she is, of course, an imported doll, but she is minus an identifying box. However, she resembles the Queen. She is coiffured in Queen Victoria's style. She is richly bejeweled, and the Queen loved jewels. Her costumes are elegantly simple. However, the doll lacks the royal crown robe, and scepter that would identify her definitely as Queen Victoria. Still royal or not, this is a most beautiful, rare, and charming doll. Ferguson p. 30-31.

Alas, the box has not further proven nor disproven the lore.
