God is much more than what we can say about him! Still, the Nicene Creed provides an indispensable starting point and guide for understanding the true What Do We Believe? and living God as he has revealed himself to us. A Commentary on the Nicene Creed Part 1 of 10 We recite the Nicene Creed each week at Mass, but how often do we reflect on what we are saying, or even understand it? Over the course of a year, I am offering some thoughts and explanations on this important Christian text, piece by piece. SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE Faithfully, Fr. Kemp+ The search committee at St. Paul’s is the group in charge of receiving and interviewing candidates for a new rector to succeed Fr. Heschlē. It has been busy “I believe…” with several tasks. When we recite the Creed, we say, “I believe,” but this does not mean that it is just my personal religious opinion. Rather, by saying “I believe” together, we are professing that this is the Church’s faith that has been passed down through the generations. Yet in saying “I believe,” each of us also claims the Church’s faith as our own. PARISH NOTES OF INTEREST Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sung Mass vs. Solemn Mass: What and Why? (Transferred) You may have noticed that the 10:30 Mass has been “dressed down” a bit since Sunday, August 18 Fr. Heschlē’s retirement. This is because we have been celebrating it as a Sung Masses at 8:00 & 10:30 am Mass rather than a Solemn Mass. So what is the difference, and why the change? A Solemn Mass is the “highest” form of celebrating the Eucharistic liturgy. Blessing of the Backpacks There is more chanting, more incense, and more pomp and ceremony. A key Sunday, September 1 characteristic is that there are three “sacred ministers,” i.e. the Celebrant (priest), All children and youth are invited to bring their backpacks for a special a Deacon, and a Subdeacon. Centuries ago (and still today in the Eastern blessing during Mass. Orthodox tradition), a Subdeacon was a “minor order” in the church (distinct from the “major orders” of Bishop, Priest, and Deacon); today that role can be filled by a lay person, but it still requires some training and practice. Church School Begins Historically, the norm at St. Paul’s was to do a Sung Mass at 10:30 most Sundays, and to celebrate major feasts with a Solemn Mass.
