Instructing the Ignorant

“And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation’” –Mark 16:15

Instructing the ignorant has been a crucial part of Christianity since its beginning. It is important to realize that while ignorant is typically used as a slur today, it can simply mean lacking the knowledge or awareness of a particular thing. Christianity was started when Jesus laid down His instructions by word and deed to a small group of disciples, who would in turn pass it on, as described in Acts, to people ignorant of what He had done for us. In this way the Faith has been passed from one culture to the next and one generation to the next, from Christian to heathen, parent to child, the story of Christianity could not progress without the instruction of the ignorant. It’s a little strange to think but, just as there is Apostolic Succession, where every Bishop, and the priests who have a share in his min- istry, has had hands laid on him by a man who had hands laid on him by a man who, etc. all the way back to the Apostles who were given their ministry directly from Christ, so have we all been evangelized by someone (be it parent or if we are cradle Catholics, or friend, spouse, book, etc. if we are converts or re- verts) who was evangelized by someone who, etc. all the way back to Jesus Christ who original brought and spread the Good News. We each have a kind of ‘succession of evangelization’ which reaches back through priests, parents, and friends all the way to Jesus handing down the Faith to His disciples.

So when we say instruct the ignorant it is important to remember that we are not only going out to counteract the loudest, most obnoxious people railing against the Faith, but going to meet anyone who has not heard the Good News, and doing our part to instruct them so they can get to where God calls them to be. Nearly everyone we will interact with in our lives today has heard of Jesus; it would be almost impossible not to. But a great majority of them have learned little or noth- ing of what He actually taught. Their entire experience of Christianity is filtered through the lens of media stories which are overwhelmingly negative, attacking anecdotal incidents of Christian hypocrisy and straw men. It is our to penetrate this negative barrier and, when possible, instruct those less knowledgeable about Christ’s saving deeds. To do this we must always be willing to learn more ourselves; always studying the faith, whether by doing good spiritual reading, doing a group study or going on a retreat, studying Scripture, or attending Mass.

Jesus tells us in many places to instruct the ignorant, in Mark 16:15 above and in near identical words in Matthew 28:19-20 where He adds, “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Also in Luke 24:44-49 where He opened the Apostles minds to understand the Scriptures before sending them to preach in His name to all nations. And again in John 20:21 where He says to them, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” St. Paul also gives us stirring and particu- larly prophetic advice in Timothy 4:1-5, “I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teach- ing. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evan- gelist; fulfill your ministry.” All the Apostles could be used as examples for this work of mercy, but someone closer to home for us who we can look to as a role model is Ven. (and hopefully soon to be Blessed) Fulton Sheen. Through his books and his work on the radio and in television he got the faith out to millions in a way no Catholic, especially in America, was ever able to before him. So many people who knew nothing but a Fundamentalist or mainline Protestant view of Christianity got a chance to see the beauty of the Catholic Faith through his energetic (and sometimes very dramatic) and persuasive talks. But he did not just speak to the masses, he would routinely, whether as a humble priest or an internationally famous bishop, go out to individuals in need of instruction and bring to them the truth and the teachings of Him who sets us free. IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints Jesus Instructs the Ignorant SPIRITUAL WORKS of MERCY: Instruct the Ignorant “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

The last words that Jesus left with His disciples was to share the Faith with everyone. Jesus knew that thousands of people would soon become Christians, all around the world! Within just a few decades, Christianity spread across the Roman Empire—Greece to northern Africa. Jesus told his disciples that they were to in- struct those new to the Faith.

Ignorant means lacking knowledge, information, or awareness about a particular thing. Thus, Jesus wanted to inform those new to Christianity who were unaware, or lacking knowledge, about the His love for His people! Jesus calls us to do the same—His message at the end of the Gospel of Matthew wasn’t just for the disciples. It’s for all Christians, even today!

Ways we can lovingly Instruct the Ignorant by: * Sharing our talents with others. * Telling stories you know from the Bible or Saints—share your Faith * Don’t think you are better than others because of what you In this series, color and cut out each picture to create know your Works of Mercy prayer book. SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, August 16: St. Roch—Confessor St. Roch was a governor’s son born in Montpellier, France in the year 1295. He was born with a red birthmark on his chest in the shape of a cross, believed to have been an answer to his barren mother’s prayers to have a child. He was devout in his faith and fasted regularly. When his parents died, he gave away his inheritance to the poor. Roch joined the Third Order Franciscans and traveled to Rome. On the way, he came across a city suffering from the plague, and began to care for the people there, many of whom were cured when he made a Sign of the Cross over them. He returned to Montpellier, where he was accused of being a spy and sent to prison by his own uncle who didn’t recognize him be- cause he disguised his appearance. Out of humility, Roch didn’t identify who he really was, and spent the last five years of his life in prison. Monday, August 17: St. Jeanne Delanoue— St. Jeanne Delanoue was born on June 18, 1666 in Saumur, France. Her family operated a religious goods store which she helped manage following the death of her father. After her mother passed away, Jeanne was visited by an elderly woman who encouraged her to care for the poor. Taking this message as a sign from God, she set out on doing just that. Soon she extended care to the sick and elderly as well. In 1704, some young ladies from the community offered assistance, and it was from this group that the Congregation of of Sainte-Anne de la Providence was formed. At the time of Jeanne’s death, the congregation had grown to include twelve communities and several homes for the poor and elderly. Tuesday, August 18: St. Helen—Empress St. Helen was married to Constantius Chlorus, an important Roman official who became emperor. Their son, Constantine, succeeded Constantius upon his death in 308. After Constantine experienced a victory under the symbol of the cross, his mother, Helen, upon whom he bestowed the title Empress, was converted to Christianity. Helen became devout in her faith, and regularly attended prayer of the divine office, financed the construction of many churches, and gave money to the poor. Helen traveled to the Holy Land and oversaw construction of churches at the site of Christ’s birth, His ascension, the agony in the garden, and upon Mt. Calvary. While excavating at Mt. Calvary, Helen discovered three crosses. A sick woman was brought in to touch the three crosses. After touching the third cross, she was miraculously healed. Helen discovered an inscrip- tion near that miraculous cross which indicated it was truly the cross of Christ. She died around 330. Wednesday, August 19: St. Ezequiel Moreno y Diaz—Bishop St. Ezequiel Moreno was born in Alfacro, Spain on April 9, 1848. In 1865, he joined the Augus- tinian Recollects in Monteagudo. He was sent to the Philippines to work as a missionary, where he labored for the next 15 years of his life. Ezequiel was ordained a priest in 1871. He was ap- pointed Bishop of Pinara and later Bishop of Pasto in 1895. In 1906, he returned to Spain where he passed away of cancer. Ezequiel is a patron of cancer patients, and numerous cures have been credited to his intercession. Thursday, August 20: St. —Bishop and Doctor St. Bernard was born into a noble family in Burgundy, France. Following the passing of his mother, Bernard en- tered the Cistercian Order. He was successful in encouraging his brothers and several friends to follow after him. His encouraged him to found a new monastery, which he did at the Abbey of Clairvaux where Bernard was named abbot. During his life, Bernard founded several monasteries and penned many works. At the time of the Second Crusade, Eugene III sent Bernard to go throughout France and Germany to inspire people to join the fight for the Holy Land. Quote: “Love is an affection of the soul, not a contract: it cannot rise from a mere agree- ment, nor is it so to be gained. It is spontaneous in its origin and impulse; and true love is its own satisfaction.” Friday, August 21: St. of Smolensk—Abbot St. Abraham was born in Smolensk, Russia in the mid-twelfth century to a wealthy family. Following the death of his parents, Abraham gave away his inheritance and became a at the Bogoroditskaya Monas- tery. He lived simply, cared for the sick and poor, and preached on the . His holiness drew the ire of his fellow which forced him to leave for the Monastery of the Holy Cross. He experienced problems there as well and was falsely accused of heresy and immorality. Following the clearing of his name, Abraham was appointed Abbot of the Mother of God Monastery where he remained until his death.

Saturday, August 22: St. Sigfrid—Abbot St. Sigfrid was born sometime during the seventh century in Northumbria, England. He served as a deacon at Wearmouth Abbey and was a good friend of St. Benedict Biscop. Dur- ing his time as deacon, he was well known for his great knowledge of the Scripture. He also suffered through poor health for much of his life. In 686, he was appointed coadjutor abbot of the Abbey. However, he passed away a couple of years later. STEWARDSHIP OF BECOME A PARISHIONER OUR TREASURES Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Conformation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain minimum re- quirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how we look upon them in relation to parish membership.

ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic COLLECTION FOR AUGUST 9, 2020 celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the REGULAR OFFERTORY Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance envelopes are the primary Loose Cash & Checks $412.00 way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket Envelope Cash & Checks $6,488.00 every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial con- tribution or donates online.
