The close of the fifteenth century is an epoch in the history of the East, and especially of Persia, of which but little is known. The blast of Timour's invasion had swept over that historic land and left it deso- late. These four Accounts of Travels by Europeans are, therefore, especially interesting in a geographi- cal and historical point of view, and will, with the books of Barbaro and Contarini, which are in Ilamusio's collection, complete the series of Italian voyages about that period. In order clearly to un- derstand the facts brought forward, it will be neces- sary to glance at the motives of policy which started the embassies, and the historical changes which in- fluenced their results. In Eastern Europe the Byzantine empire had, after a long and gradual decline, at length crumbled into ruins beneath the power of the Ottomans, which threatened to be as great a scourge to Europe as that of Timur (or Tamerlane) had been to Asia, while the stability and vitality of their empire oifered a great contrast to the ephemeral charac- A 11 A NARRATIVE OF ter of Timur's dominion.

  • On the Origins and the Meanings of Levantine Objects in Early Modern Venice Elizabeth Rodini
Mobile Things: On the Origins and the Meanings of Levantine Objects in Early Modern Venice Elizabeth Rodini An elaborate brass wine-cup in the collection of Victoria and Albert Museum, London (plate 1) exemplifies the analytic complexities this essay will explore: incised and inlaid with silver in the Levantine manner known as damascening and marked with the coat of arms of the Priuli family of Venice, the cup is a cultural composite that challenges modern art-historical and museological classifications, specifically those based on a geography of origins.1 The V&A’s own cataloguing points to the problem at hand. Although the cup resides in the European galleries, the museum’s on-line description lists place of origin as ‘Syria (possibly, made); Damascus, Syria (probably, decorated); Egypt (possibly, made)’, while also speculating that the cup was likely fabricated in the Middle East, the foot in Venice, and the whole sent to Syria for decoration in a single workshop.2 Such geographic contortions are not unique to the Priuli wine-cup. Many objects associated with the affluent mercantile culture of early modern Venice are fusions – whether literal or conceptual – that inhibit a clear identification of origins, and this is particularly true of damascened brassware. For as the Venetian market for Levantine pieces flourished in the later fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, local craftsmen laboured hard to duplicate prized imports and take their share of the profits.3 The resulting objects ‘demonstrate a deliberate attempt to emulate Levantine originals in design and technique’.4 Like the composite wine- cup, these imitative wares have complicated subsequent scholarship, and many so- called ‘Veneto-Saracenic’ objects continue to defy association with a particular site of production.5 This circumstance frustrates curators and other scholars for whom an object’s site of production is a critical, even the most vital piece of historical data.

  • Roger Short Memorial Fund Newsletter an Introduction from Lucy Fisher - Short Traveller 2009
May 2016 Roger Short Memorial Fund Newsletter An Introduction from Lucy Fisher - Short Traveller 2009 This year Turkey has been thrust into an increasingly central role in some of the most challenging global problems of this century so far: the Syrian civil war and the related migration crisis. Set in that context, the work of the Roger Short Memorial Fund – which has now sent over 60 Univ students to the nation and surrounding region – is more important than ever. It has been a great pleasure to read both the excerpts from the travel diaries of last year’s Short Travellers, as well as peruse the ambitious plans of this year’s cohort, which extend from mapping the migrant crisis to visiting the war graves of Gallipoli and exploring the wonders of Cappadocia. Since my first trip to the nation in 2009 – as a Short Traveller – when fellow classicist Alice Morton and I spent a summer clambering through sun-dappled oleander groves to marvel over ancient ruins, my interest in Turkey has tilted towards the geopolitical. This January, in my role as a political journalist, I accompanied the Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond on an official visit to Ankara and Adana province in the south east. In the capital he met with President Erdogan before travelling on to Saricam, a clean and well-equipped camp that is at present home to 12,000 refugees. The trip also took in a civil defence training centre for the Syrian “White Helmets”. This Turkish-led initiative prepares Syrian volunteers who act as an emergency response service after devastating airstrikes decimate their towns.

  • CHAPTER ONE: a HISTORICAL BACKGROUND the Venetian State
On the Knowledge of Persia in the Republic of Venice 7 CHAPTER ONE: A HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The Venetian state developed first as an overseas colonial empire and only later became a continental power, maintaining a strong vocation for international trade virtually until the last days of the Serenissima. Trade and shipping were openly acknowledged as the pillars of Venice’s might and wealth, and trade included Persia as well as lands which were connected to Persia, to a various degree and extent, by a number of historical, political, economic, cultural and linguistic ties. The Venetian merchants residing in Persia at any given time must have been always less numerous than those living in Byzantine Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire, or the Black Sea basin and the Crimea at the heyday of Venetian power, but their presence was not a negligible one. Thus, it is not surprising that a steady flow of information on Persia arrived to Venice, and that much of this information was produced or at least conveyed by traders. At an iconographic level, the inhabitants of Persia and of the lands surrounding it were (and still are) represented in the very political, ceremonial and symbolic heart of Venice, the Palazzo Ducale (which was the seat of the nominal head of the State, the Doge, as well as that of many government bodies, including those which were the expression of the paramount role of Venetian nobility and through which the nobility actually ruled the Republic, namely, the Maggior Consi- glio and the Senato) and the adjacent Basilica di S. Marco (which was the private chapel of the Doge).

• Venice As an "Eastern City" Deborah Howard
Venice as an "Eastern City" Deborah Howard or medi eval Europe, the lands ro the east embodied a range of material and spiritual asso ciations, as the source of exotic and precious commodi ti es and the perceived location of FParadise. From at least the 9th century, Venice's political and economic viability depended on commercial li nk; with the East, and over the centuries th e city came to acquire a hybrid idemiry infused with Eastern characteristics. As John Ruskin wrote in The Stones a/Venice, "the Venetiam deserve especial note as the only European people who appear to have sympathized ro the ful l with the great instinct of the Eastern races." In contraSt with most other European powers of the Middle Ages, the members of the Venetian ruling elite were not great feudal landowners but imernacional merchants. Inhabiting a group of marshy islands in a shallow lagoon, they had no natural resources except for fish and salt, and only gradually acquired a hinterland. Thus the city's livelihood depended on long-dis tance rravel and daring trading ventures. The theft of St. Mark's body from Alexandria in 828 was only possible because the appearance ofVenecian merchants in the Egyptian parr caused no surprise. In the same year th e testament of Doge Giustiniano Parrecipazio revealed that he himself had huge investments in ove rseas uading voyages.! Over the centuries, Venice strug gled ro achieve supremacy over her rivals in Levantine (fade, especiall y Pisa and Genoa. By the 15"' century, however, it had achieved undeniable dominance in the import of Eastern merchandise into Europe.

Notes Introduction: Reading Persia in Renaissance England 1. Chartered in 1555, its origins lie in the failed 1553 Willoughby and Chancellor voyage to the northeast passage, and the company was founded as the Mystery and Company of Merchant Adventurers to New Found Lands. 2. ‘The voyage to Cathaio by the East is doutlesse very easie and short’, the geogra- pher Gerardus Mercator wrote to Richard Hakluyt, ‘and I haue oftentimes mar- velled, that being so happily begun it hath bene left of[f], and the course changed into the West, after that more then half of your voyage was discovered’. Fifteenth-Century Burgundy and the Islamic East Darren M. Smith 2016 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Diploma of Arts (Hons) in History, University of Sydney 1 2 Acknowledgements I was fortunate to have had two supervisors across my project, albeit each for half a year. First was Dr John Gagné, for whose enthusiasm, ever-inspiring lectures, creativity, and encouragement to look deeper I am most grateful. Second was Dr Hélène Sirantoine, whose classes on medieval Iberia and Mediterranean first introduced me to the possibilities of cross- cultural perspectives on the Middle Ages. Her guidance in navigating Christian–Muslim relations in the Middle Ages was valuable, as was her enthusiasm for the topic. I acknowledge the assistance of Associate Professor David J. Wrisley (American University of Beirut) for his advice on accessing a dissertation by Yvon Lacaze relating to one of my sources, as well as his own contributions to the field this thesis covers. I also acknowledge Dr Andrew Brown (Massey University, New Zealand) for forwarding his article on Castilians in Bruges, as well as Noel Geirhardt (Head Archivist, City of Bruges and curator of the Adorno Family Estate in Bruges) for his assistance accessing a source. Many thanks too to Dr Julie Smith (University of Sydney) for her valuable feedback on my thesis prospectus. One of the challenges of working in a non-anglophone historical context, and dealing with non-anglophone sources and scholarship, is accessing primary and secondary material, much of which is located in the northern hemisphere. I want to give special mention to Aleksandra Nikolic, Tam Dao, and others in Fisher Library team who helped track down materials outside the library’s own collection and overseas.

Downloaded by [University of Oregon] at 09:45 06 November 2017 The Colonies of Genoa in the Black Sea Region This book focuses on the network of the Genoese colonies in the Black Sea area and their diverse multi-ethnic societies. It raises the problems of con- tinuity of the colonial patterns, reveals the importance of the formation of the late medieval/early modern colonialism, the urban demography, and the functioning of the polyethnic entangled society of Caffa in its interaction with the outer world. It offers a novel interpretation of the functioning of this late medieval colonial polyethnic society and rejects the widely accepted narrative portraying the whole history of Caffa of the fifteenth century as a period of constant decline and depopulation. • The Castle of Silifke, a Neglected Hospitaller Fortification in Cilicia
CASTELOS DAS ORDENS MILITARES Castelos das Ordens Militares Atas do Encontro Internacional Edição Direção-Geral do Património Cultural (DGPC) Coordenação Científica Isabel Cristina Ferreira Fernandes (GEsOS – Município de Palmela) Lisboa, março de 2014 227 The Castle of Silifke, a neglected Hospitaller fortification in Cilicia MATHIAS PIANA Augsburg he modern town of Silike is located in Cilicia Tracheia, where the river Göksu, the ancient Kalykadnos, leaves the Taurus Mountains and enters into an alluvial plain before reaching the coast. It covers the site of its ancient predecessor, founded in the Hellenistic Period and thriving during the Roman and Byzantine epochs. he castle lies immediately to the west of the town, on an isolated hill of oval shape, 185 m above sea level (Fig. 1). Between the hill of the castle, most probably the location of the ancient acropolis, and the town proper an elevated terrace is located, which is thought to have been the site of the Hellenistic polis. History Founded by Seleukos I Nikator in the early 3rd century BC, Seleukeia later became the centre of a Roman province and in the Early Byzantine period the seat of a metropolitan1. During the Byzantine-Arab Wars of the 9th and 10th centuries, Selekia, as it was called then, seems to have been in Byzantine hands throughout2. Whether there was an early castle, built at that time to protect the town and the new coastal theme of the same name3, remains doubtful. It is more probable that the town with its walls constituted the principal fortiication in this 228 IV – FORTIFICAÇÕES DA ORDEM DO TEMPLO E DA ORDEM DO HOSPITAL period, as there is evidence that the walls of the ancient town were rebuilt by the Byzantines (see below).
