The period covered includes pre-Qin through the Sui dynasty. This work is the product of over forty years of my study of classi- cal Chinese literature. During my career I have accumulated a large num- ber of notes and bibliographies on various Chinese literary figures, genres, works, and the like. Much of this work has been provided to students of a history of Chinese literature that I have taught at the University of Wash- ington since 1972. I also have given copies of these materials to colleagues and friends some of whom have urged me to publish them. This book is also the byproduct of another project in which I was involved for some years. In 1994, Dr. James Peck approached me about the possibility of compiling a handbook for classical Chinese literature. The entries were to be written by Chinese literature specialists in China. Tai ping Chang and I were entrusted with overseeing the translation of these entries into English. The English version of the handbook was to be published by Yale University Press as part of their Culture and Civiliza- tion series. Through the largess of a generous grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, we made good progress on this project. However, in 2004, the focus of the Culture and Civilization project changed to focus on the arts, and it was no longer possible to include the handbook in this series. Shortly thereafter, Taiping Chang proposed to compile a reference guide based on my materials. She prepared a list of proposed entries, and we began to compose individual entries. We discovered in the process that there were gaps in our coverage. Taiping Chang and I along with several of our graduate students wrote the missing entries. We envision this book as an aide to scholars and students who wish to obtain information about ancient and medieval Chinese literature. We also hope that Chinese scholars and students will also find this work useful, for there is an increased need in this age of internationalization of scholarship for Chinese scholars to know what has been written about classical Chinese literature outside of China. This reference guide contains some 800 entries that provide important information about literary figures, genres, literary trends, dating, literary schools, and where pertinent, technical terms. The entries are based on a variety of sources. We have relied to a limited extent on the unpub- lished entries prepared for the original Companion volume, but the bulk of the entries have been written through consultation of primary Chinese viii introduction sources and where available, authoritative modern scholarly studies in Chi- nese, Japanese, and Western languages. There are two entries that we have preserved from the unpublished Chinese project: the entry on the Han fu by the late Cao Daoheng 曹道衡 (1928–2005), the premier world author- ity of his generation on Han through Sui dynasty literature, and the entry on Tao Yuanming by Yuan Xingpei 袁行霈 of Peking University, who has written extensively on this important writer. We thought the inclusion of these two entries was important as a means of introducing the best of modern Chinese scholarship to a Western readership. We have attempted to emulate the format of the Brill biographical dic- tionaries compiled by Michael Loewe and Rafe de Crespigny. Many of the entries contain biographies of literary figures, some of whom are also treated in the Loewe and de Crespigny volumes. However, since our emphasis is on literature, we provide new information about literature that is often not included in the Loewe and de Crespigny works. Format The work is arranged in alaphetical order based on the Romanized form of a name, work title, literary genre, or literary period name. Examples: Guo Pu, Lunyu, qiyan poetry, Jian’an literature. For literary figures, we provide the following information in the heading: Surname and personal name, dates (if known), and zi (style or courtesy name). Within the entry itself, we give in the first sentence information about the person’s natal and/or ancestral place. We have attempted as much as possible to provide information about family background and the persons connection with other literary figures from that same family. We hope that this information will be useful to students of literary sociology. Although the entries provide detailed information about a person’s career, because the emphasis of this work is on literature, we have tended to focus more on events that pertain to literary matters. Nevertheless, many of the biographies, especially those from the period from the Wei to the Sui dynasties, can stand on their own as a supplement to the Loewe and deCrespigny dictionaries. We provide dates for all persons upon the first occurrence in each entry. We have heavily relied on the careful dating done by Cao Daoheng and introduction ix Shen Yucheng in Zhongguo wenxuejia dacidian and their Zhonggu wenxue shiliao congkao. For official titles, we have mostly used the equivalents given in Charles Hucker’s A Dictionary of Official Titles in Imperial China. However, one of our innovations is “professor” for boshi 博士. We have also devised the rendering “Eastern Institute” for Dongguan 東觀. We have tried to be meticulous about identifying all place names upon first occurrence in an entry. We repeat this information for each occurrence in subsequent entries. Our primary sources for geographical information are the standard history dictionaries published by the Shandong jiaoyu chubanshe. Because this is a guide to literature, for some figures and works that are important for other than literary reasons (e.g., politics, thought, or religion), we have not provided full discussion or bibliography, but have tended to focus on literary matters. Thus, although we include entries for such works as Lun yu, Laozi, Han Feizi, or Shen Dao, we have not devoted as much detail to them as we have in most of the more “literary” entries. In the bibliographies we do not pretend to be exhaustive. They are basically what I have accumulated over a forty-year period. There are undoubtedly many omissions.     ROMANIZATION AND SOME CILICIAN CULTS By HUGH ELTON (BIAA) This paper focuses on two sites from central Cilicia in Anatolia, the Cory­ cian Cave and Kanhdivane, to make some comments about religion and Romanization. From the Corycian Cave, a pair of early third-century AD altars are dedicated to Zeus Korykios, described as Victorious (Epinikios), Triumphant (Tropaiuchos), and the Harvester (Epikarpios), and to Hermes Korykios, also Victorious, Triumphant, and the Harvester. The altars were erected for 'the fruitfulness and brotherly love of the Augusti', suggesting they come from the period before Geta's murder, i.e. between AD 209 and 212. 1 These altars are unremarkable and similar examples are common else­ where, so these altars can be interpreted as showing the homogenising effect of the Roman Empire. But behind these dedications, however, may lie a re­ ligious tradition stretching back to the second millennium BC. At the second site, Kanhdivane, a tomb in the west necropolis was accompanied by a fu­ nerary inscription erected by Marcus Ulpius Knos for himself and his family, probably in the second century AD. Marcus then added, 'but if anyone damages or opens [the tomb] let him pay to the treasury of Zeus 1000 [de­ narii] and to the Moon (Selene) and to the Sun (Helios) above 1000 [denarii] and let him be subject to the curses also of the Underground Gods (Kata­ chthoniai Theoi). ' 2 When he wanted to threaten retribution, Knos turned to a local group of gods. As at the Corycian Cave, Knos' actions may preserve traces of pre-Roman practices, though within a Roman framework.

Dynamics of Disintegration: The Later Han Empire (25-220CE) & Its Northwestern Frontier Abstract As a frontier region of the Qin-Han (221BCE-220CE) empire, the northwest was a new territory to the Chinese realm. Until the Later Han (25-220CE) times, some portions of the northwestern region had only been part of imperial soil for one hundred years. Its coalescence into the Chinese empire was a product of long-term expansion and conquest, which arguably defined the egionr 's military nature. Furthermore, in the harsh natural environment of the region, only tough people could survive, and unsurprisingly, the region fostered vigorous warriors. Mixed culture and multi-ethnicity featured prominently in this highly militarized frontier society, which contrasted sharply with the imperial center that promoted unified cultural values and stood in the way of a greater degree of transregional integration. As this project shows, it was the northwesterners who went through a process of political peripheralization during the Later Han times played a harbinger role of the disintegration of the empire and eventually led to the breakdown of the early imperial system in Chinese history.

All those who have touched upon Han studies must acknowledge an immense intellectual debt to his work. I have had the great privilege of being his student at Cambridge back in the early 1980s while I was writing my doctoral thesis on He Xiu and the Later Han “jinwen jingxue վ֮ᆖᖂ.” Along with his vast ۶ٖ knowledge about the Han period, he has kept giving me much more over the years: his unfailing support, his human warmth, and wisdom. All this, alas, has not transformed me into what I ought to have be- come: a disciple worthy of the master. The few general considerations I am about to submit about what it meant to be a ru ᕢ in the Han pe- riod call forth an immediate analogy. I would tend to view myself as a “vulgar ru,” as opposed to authentic ones such as the great sinologists who have taught me. Jacques Gernet, who is also one of them, asked me once half teas- ingly whether one could actually talk about an existing Confucianism as early as the Han. His opinion was that what is commonly called Neo-Confucianism from the Song onwards should actually be consid- ered as the earliest form of Confucianism. Conversely, in an article on ᆖ, Michael Nylan and Nathan Sivinخ֜ Yang Xiong’s ཆႂ Taixuan jing described the new syntheses of beliefs prevalent among leading think- ers of the Han as “the first Neo-Confucianism,”1 meaning that “what sinologists call the ‘Confucianism’ of that time decisively rejected cru- cial parts of ‘Confucius’s Way.’ Its revisionism is as great in scope as that of the Song.”2 I here thank the anonymous referees for their critical remarks on my paper and apologize for failing, due to lack of time and availability, to make all the necessary revisions.

Vol. 32.2: 113-151 thomas j. mazanec How Poetry Became Meditation in Late-Ninth-Century China abstract: In late-ninth-century China, poetry and meditation became equated — not just meta- phorically, but as two equally valid means of achieving stillness and insight. This article discusses how several strands in literary and Buddhist discourses fed into an assertion about such a unity by the poet-monk Qiji 齊己 (864–937?). One strand was the aesthetic of kuyin 苦吟 (“bitter intoning”), which involved intense devotion to poetry to the point of suffering. At stake too was the poet as “fashioner” — one who helps make and shape a microcosm that mirrors the impersonal natural forces of the macrocosm. Jia Dao 賈島 (779–843) was crucial in popularizing this sense of kuyin. Concurrently, an older layer of the literary-theoretical tradition, which saw the poet’s spirit as roaming the cosmos, was also given new life in late Tang and mixed with kuyin and Buddhist meditation. The mythical figure of Siegfried from Xanten (Colonia Ulpia Traiana), the greatest hero of the Germanic and Nordic sagas, is based on the real Gallic emperor Victorinus (meaning “the victorious”), whose name can be translated into Siegfried (Sigurd etc.), which means “victorious” in German and the Scandinavian languages. The reign of Victorinus is conventionally dated 269-271 AD. He is one of the leaders of the so-called Gallic Empire (Imperium Galliarum; 260-274 AD), mostly known from Historia Augusta (Thayer 2018), Epitome de Caesaribus of Aurelius Victor (Banchich 2009), and the Breviarum of Eutropius (Watson 1886). The capital city of this empire was Cologne, 80 km south of Xanten. Trier and Lyon were additional administrative centers. This sub-kingdom tried to defend the western part of the Roman Empire against invaders who were taking advantage of the so-called Crisis of the Third Century, which mysteriously lasted exactly 50 years (234 to 284 AD). Now what is called womanly virtue need not be brilliant ability, exceptionally different from others. Womanly words need be neither clever in debate nor keen in conversation. Womanly appearance requires neither a pretty nor a perfect face and form. Womanly work need not be work done more skilfully than that of others. (Ban Zhao, Lessons for Women, chapter IV; translated by Nancy Swann) Ban Zhao (c. 45–120) was the first woman historian of China. She is known for her contributions to a masterpiece of Chinese historical writing, Han Shu (History of the Former Han Dynasty) and to an extant classic of Chinese women's education, Nü Jie (Lessons for Women or Admonitions for Women). Her works became standard reference for the education of daughters from Han China through the Qing period and, along with her other literary and educational accomplishments, won her the respectful traditional title of the "Venerable Madame Cao."1 Despite her scholarly contributions to Han China and to succeeding dynasties, Ban Zhao has not attracted much attention from Western scholars. Nancy Lee Swann wrote a much reprinted biography of Ban Zhao in 1932, but only recently has her career found its way into several publications in English.2 According to Paul Goldin, this revival of interest is attributable to the increasing importance of Chinese gender studies as a field of academic inquiry in general.3 If so, this current wave of interest is typical of the fluctuations in appreciation of her work over the centuries.

In a typical book of Chinese literary history in any language, little, if anything, is said about Wu and Shu. This article argues that the consider- ation of the literary production of Shu and Wu is crucial to a fuller picture of the cultural dynamics of the Three Kingdoms period. The three states competed with one another for the claim to political legitimacy and cultural supremacy, and Wu in particular was in a position to contend with Wei in its cultural undertakings, notably in the areas of history writing and ritual music.

Coetzee, Waiting for the Barbarians ike the prose- poetic fu, historiography became a medium through L which Han writers challenged or reformulated the classical ideal of tributary empire. In the paradigm enshrined in the Book of Documents (“Tribute of Yu”), the ruler’s foreign and domestic subjects symbolically enacted the hierarchical po liti cal order through the annual exchange of material tribute. While the fu was embroiled in the Han politics of things (e.g., related to lavish spending, tribute, exotica), historiography introduced a new politics of persons. Both ancient and modern scholars have understood Han historiography as a way of introducing new dis- cursive subjects into Chinese literature. Th ose groups perceived by clas- sicists to pose the greatest threat to the Han dynasty tributary order— commercial profi teers at home and the enemy Xiongnu confederacy abroad— were identifi ed as new types of people through historiography’s innovative style of sustained historical, geo graph i cal, cultural, and bio- graphical description. Th is chapter re- examines the repre sen ta tion of these occupants of Han frontiers and markets in the Han dynasty’s two historiographies: Sima Qian’s Shiji, composed before and during Emperor 144 Genres Wu’s activist reign in the Former Han period; and Ban Gu’s Hanshu, composed during the po liti cal establishment of classicism in the Later Han period.1 As addressed in chapters 1 and 2, classical scholars traditionally as- sumed that literary works had a moral or po liti cal function.
