A message from the Festival Director

Brethren we now start our third year full of optimism on the back of a very successful 2017. Where the MCF successfully distributed £3,000,000 to 300 charities as part of the Tercentenary community grants of which £79,000 was distributed to charities in our Province. Currently in Durham over 100 freemasons and their families are currently supported by our Masonic Charity. If you think they may be able to help you or someone you know please make the call or contact your Almoner or Benevolent Representative. This can be done confidentially by the enquiry line: 0800 035 60 90.

This month will see the launch of the Grand Raffle with over £8,000 in money; also, the sweetie tubes are back and available at the Charity Stewards Conference, Shiney Row on February 17th. We have lots of opportunities to support our Festival, so please get involved and make a difference.

Get behind the Weight Loss Challenge Several of the members of Spirit of Rugby Lodge are taking on a sponsored weight loss challenge in joint aid of the Masonic Charitable Foundation and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. The challenge has been set for conclusion in June 2018.

The success of the Durham Festival will be vital to the funds available for the Trust in 2021 via the Masonic Charitable Foundation.

“He Just went for a ride” Christmas certainly arrived early at the Masonic Temple in Chester le Street, when Malcolm Barlow, the Master of Cestria Lodge, presented David Hanson, the East Area Festival Director, with a cheque for £2600 for the 2021 Festival. That magnificent amount was raised by Malcolm’s Motorcycle Charity Ride from Land‘s End to John O’Groats. 603 miles as the crow flies or 874 miles by road. This is no mean feat, however, as Malcolm put it, “he went for a ride on his bike”.

The evening continued at the festive board and, after enjoying good food, John Arthur thanked Trinity for their hospitality that evening. He then went on to praise Simon Atkinson for getting 50% of the lodge members to sign up to the dripping tap Continuous Giving scheme leading to the lodge getting its Gold Award that evening. A brilliant evening, enjoyed by all.

RMTGB Grand Patron Certificate The RMTGB have begun distributing Grand Patron certificates, these are awarded to brethren who have donated at least £1200 (excluding Gift Aid) to the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys. Brethren from the Province of Durham who have contributed via Continuous Giving since 2010 or those who have contributed to our Festival will be eligible assuming they have given the full amount of £1200. Please find below a list of the events for 2018 which have been arranged so far. If you fancy taking part we strongly urge you to register without delay. Some of the events have limited places and we know they are going to be popular. Fees for the events can be paid by the individual or even by the lodge. The committee will support you throughout the process with online and paper donation methods.
