She told us their album, a five-year long process, started when the Swedish band members met at a party and immediately started writing music. “Sometimes you make up stories,” Jawo said about the songwriting process. The duo co-wrote most of the on the album. “Sometimes you have to re-experience things Aino Jawo (left) and Caroline Hjelt and usually when you write, you go though an emotional make up the Swedish duo Icona journey. Romantic love is purely surface on “I Love It.” The confronts, with fists raised high, an emotional breakup between two lovers, and the intensity provides fans with the delicious lines: “I crashed my car into the bridge. I watched, I let it burn. I threw your sh#t into a bag and pushed it down the stairs.” Wouldn’t repeating that mantra help anyone who has broken up with a loved one? The song has enough infuriation and rocker-mentality for men to feel comfortable yelling, and it has a familial recognition to be sung in a hairbrush by women of all ages. “A lot of the songs we write are about ourselves, our friends, or someone around us,” Jawo continued. “We also love to watch people. We had more time before, but you get to make up stories in your head.” It is also refreshing to hear a playful twist on female friendships in “Girlfriends,” which samples Tupac’s “Me And My Girlfriends,” using the iconic lines: “All I need in this life of sin is me and my girlfriend/Down to ride till the happy end, is me and my girlfriend.” The single was produced by Norwegian producers Stargate, who created four No. 1 singles for Rihanna and worked with Beyonce, Wiz Khalifa, Selena Gomez, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo and Alexis Jordan. “There have been a lot of people involved. We worked with a lot of amazing producers: Patrik Berger, Elof Loelv, Shellback (Karl Johan Schuster), Knuckles and Stargate,” added Jawo. Overall, the album’s sound feels the way Icona Pop dresses – ready for the weekend, edgy and future forward. Their go to color of choice when coordinating outfits is black – close behind is gray and white – which is odd considering how lively the duo is. However, it could be more about “the look” and not the substance. But it also may have something to do with absence or being “un-pregnant” after completing their album. “It’s awkward when you finish an album. It’s like, ‘Oh, that’s it.’ There is so much stress before you finish up an album. It’s not like, ‘I’ve written these 12 songs, and they’re going in, and we have an album.’ We changed a lot of the songs at the Co urtesy o f B ig eat last minute, because the studio didn’t think the songs expressed what we were feeling enough. Thrilling action... gripping and exhilarating “ - MovieExclusive.com ” STARTS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 o f Son y P ictures C lassics © R az o r F ilm , Co urtesy To bias Ko w n atzki LAEMMLE NOHO - 5240 LANKERSHIM BLVD, NORTH HOLLYWOOD Wadjda is the story of 10-year-old Wadjda, a girl dreaming to break conformity. AMC ATLANTIC TIMES SQUARE - 450 N ATLANTIC BLVD, MONTEREY PARK Don’t underestimate 10-year-old Wadjda. Even though she’s a little girl living in a AMC ORANGE 30 - 20 CITY BLVD W, ORANGE country that doesn’t necessarily view men and women as equals, she will stop at nothing to get what her heart desires. Director and writer Haifaa Al Mansour has created a beautiful drama with her film Wadjda. Set in a suburb of Riyadh, the capitol of Saudi Arabia, Wadjda tells the story of a slightly rebellious little girl trying to raise money to buy a bike, even though her mother, principal and the rest of INDOOR society believe a girl riding a bike is inappropriate. Immediately, you are curious about where this film is going. In the opening scene, Wadjda (played by Waad Mohammed) is asked to recite words to a religious song. Dressed in an all-black KART RACING cloak, called a “awrah,” like all of her (female) classmates, Wadjda stands out because of her shoes; the other girls wear simple black ones, while she dons a pair of beat-up Chuck Taylor sneakers. Okay, this girl has spunk. It’s not surprising when Wadjda sets her mind to buy a shiny green bike so she can beat her best friend, who is a boy, in a race. Her mother won’t give her the money, so she comes up with harmless moneymaking schemes to raise the funds herself: selling bracelets at school, delivering forbidden messages for classmates – Wadjda is going to get herself a bike. When she gets caught with her contraband, Wadjda then decides to join the religious club and enter a Koran recitation competition that would reward her the money. Her journey to her dream bike is only an arm’s reach away…or is it? The film does an excellent job of giving viewers an (I assume) accurate portrayal of what ARRIVE & DRIVE . ADULTS AND JUNIORS 48” AND UP life is like in Saudi Arabia for women: they must cover virtually all parts of their body except for their eyes, their voice must not be too loud for men to hear (a woman’s voice is her “nakedness,” says Wadjda’s principal), women should not be with men who are not family, they should leave their location if they are in other men’s view, girls as young as 10 years old can be married off to a 20-year-old man and so much more. The difference between American culture and Saudi Arabian culture is evident, which is why audiences can’t help but chuckle when Wadjda says or does something that is so “westernized.” Mohammed is a joy to watch on screen. At 12 years old, she has a strong acting presence and maturity. This role was made for Mohammed; the little actress even came into her audition with the same defiant, rebellious attitude that Wadjda embodies along with a pair of Chuck Taylors. PROFESSIONALLY GREAT FAMILY FUN! DESIGNED TRACKS SPACIOUS LOBBIES Wadjda may be the main character of the film, but her mother has a significant role. She wanted him to play baseball. Her father, Sam, had been a promising second baseman decades ago, eventually signing with the Cleveland Indians organization. In 1963, he set the record for stolen bases at Pasadena City College. A yearbook picture captures him swiping home plate. Even his godmother, Melinda Helms — who shared his love for the gridiron — preferred that he play basketball. Riley never doubted his future. He never had the patience for standing at first base. He loved basketball, but it didn’t call to him with equal fervor. He belonged in pads and a helmet, his first — a San Francisco 49ers costume set — bought for $50 when he was three years old. There’s a picture of him wearing them, crouching down in a three-point stance. He always played with the older kids. Shortly after he hit his growth spurt in eighth grade, he became a legitimate prospect. During his sophomore year at St. Francis High, USC gave him his first offer. Over a dozen followed. He was named to all-star teams by nearly every local newspaper, and Rivals.com rated him the No. 9 safety in the country. Swayed by Rick Neuheisel and the promise of a rising program, he signed with UCLA. He says God watched over him that night at the Rose Bowl.
