As an educator I feel strongly that principal Membery should be commended for not only constructively addressing the house names of his school with an objective view of history, but also for maintaining the controversial O-Tawhao carvings and using them as a teaching point. Art is always up for scrutiny, which is why it is one of the best ways to promote the lost skill of critical thinking in New Zealand schools. It is all too easy to be swept up in a juvenile American-style ‘cancel culture’ where any trace of history that can be interpreted as offensive by anyone, is aggressively swept under the rug. Denying history promotes a type of ignorance and lack of individual resilience that is ultimately more divisive for a society. Rather than succumb to this trend and promote a victim mentality amongst young people, Te Awamutu College seems committed to doing what all excellent schools do . . . educating. The challenge for schools is always to remember that a commitment to biculturalism (‘bi’ meaning two) as demanded by the government, is a commitment to identifying, promoting and celebrating the positive aspects of both British and Tangata Whenua Ma¯ori cultures together. A dignified step forward, well done Te Awamutu College. Dan Bair

Plan meeting attendance

What would you consider as being the two most important issues in an elected councillor’s term? I would consider it; firstly, being their election campaign; regardless of whether they uphold or break their promises to ratepayers; secondly, being the development and administration of the Long-Term Plan that drives the district and Wall to Wall WOW Factor sets the rating impact. So it should go without saying that attendance by elected councillors to public meetings on the Long-Term Plan should be mandatory for all — since this is ultimately the key document that drives the district and sets at a WOW price of $89 out rates. There is no plausible excuse to be absent from the Long-Term Public meetings, except to unprofessionally renege on their obligated duty to the ratepayer and ignore what they have to say. Who can beat that? So, it angers me to hear that elected councillors’ attendance to a meeting at a marae to discuss Ma¯ori wards is mandatory — when on the other hand ratepayers were lucky enough to only get a sprinkling attendance of one to three elected councillors for meetings on the Long-Term Plan . . .
