In its five-year history, the Jock Hobbs Memorial National Under 19 Tournament has become a much-anticipated event on the rugby calendar and has seen some of New Zealand’s most promising young rugby players get no- ticed. I hope that this year’s tournament will lead to more players taking the next steps in their rugby journey – it is always fantastic to see. Jock Hobbs was a very special man whose immense contribution to rugby can still be seen wherever you look in the game. Therefore, it is fitting that this tournament is named for him. He was a player, an All Black and a cap- tain, a coach and administrator at many different levels. Considering his love for the game and passion for securing its future, I am sure he would have been delighted to see this Tournament do so well. This tournament also gives us a great opportunity to recognise the incredible on and off field service to the game provided by Graham Mourie, Sir Michael Jones and the late Sir DJ Graham, through the trophies that carry their names and are on the line this week. Over 400 young players, match officials, coaches and team management will take part in this week-long rugby event, which features 24 games of rugby, development workshops and posi- tion-specific coaching clinics. I hope you all enjoy the experience, make new connections and get as much as you can out of what’s on offer. JOCK HOBBS SIR MICHAEL MEMORIAL JONES TROPHY NATIONAL FOR THE UNDER 19 CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT WINNER Better known as Jock, Michael Sir Michael Niko Jones James Bowie Hobbs was born was born in Auckland and in Christchurch and represented was identified as a strong Canterbury, Wellington and rugby talent at a young age, the All Blacks. The Tournament showcases the best up and coming talent in the country and provides a key talent identification opportunity for the New Zealand Under 20 programme. It has produced a host of players who have earned Provincial Union and Investec Super Rugby contracts, with a number moving on to even higher honours including All Blacks Jack Goodhue, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Rieko Ioane, Jordie Barrett and Asafo Aumua. 400 players from 16 teams will compete across two divisions, for the Graham Mourie Cup (premiership) and Sir Michael Jones Trophy (championship).
