Kindergarten Charles County Public Schools Elementary Reading Information for Families

By the end of kindergarten, students are typically able to do the following:

 Use the meaning of the text, picture clues, and beginning letters to read a new word.  Monitor his or her reading for understanding.  Make self-corrections when something does not make sense.  Read and write about 30 words.  Hear and write the beginning, middle, and ending sounds of CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words (like bug, dog, sit).  Point to words when reading and follow two lines of print.
