Heraldry Arms granted to members of the MacNeil, McNeill, Macneal, MacNeile families The law of heraldry arms In Scotland all things armorial are governed by the laws of arms administered by the Court of the Lord Lyon. The origin of the office of Lord Lyon is shrouded in the mists of history, but various Acts of Parliament, especially those of 1592 and 1672 supplement the established authority of Lord Lyon and his brother heralds. The Lord Lyon is a great officer of state and has a dual capacity, both ministerial and judicial. In his ministerial capacity, he acts as heraldic advisor to the Sovereign, appoints messengers-at-arms, conducts national ceremony and grants arms. In his judicial role, he decides on questions of succession, authorizes the matriculation of arms, registers pedigrees, which are often used as evidence in the matter of succession to peerages, and of course judges in cases when the Procurator Fiscal prosecutes someone for the wrongful use of arms. A System of Heraldry Alexander Nisbet Published 1722 A classic standard heraldic treatise on heraldry, organized by armorial features used, and apparently attempting to list arms for every Scottish family, alive at the time or extinct. Nesbit quotes the source for most of the arms included in the treatis alongside the blazon A System of Heraldry is one of the most useful research sources for finding the armory of a Scots family. It is also the best readily available source discussing charges used in Scots heraldry . The Court of the Lord Lyon is the heraldic authority for Scotland and deals with all matters relating to Scottish Heraldry and Coats of Arms and maintains the Scottish Public Registers of Arms and Genealogies. -

These records were made by botanists, most of whom were amateur and some of whom were professional, employed by government departments or undertaking environmental impact assessments. This publication is intended to be of assistance to conservation and planning organisations and authorities, district and local councils and interested members of the public. Edinburgh Graveyards Project: Documentary Survey For Canongate Kirkyard --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Canongate 1.1. Background Canongate’s close proximity to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which is situated at the eastern end of Canongate Burgh, has been influential on both the fortunes of the Burgh and the establishment of Canongate Kirk. In 1687, King James VII declared that the Abbey Church of Holyroodhouse was to be used as the chapel for the re-established Order of the Thistle and for the performance of Catholic rites when the Royal Court was in residence at Holyrood. The nave of this chapel had been used by the Burgh of Canongate as a place of Protestant worship since the Reformation in the mid sixteenth century, but with the removal of access to the Abbey Church to practise their faith, the parishioners of Canongate were forced to find an alternative venue in which to worship. Fortunately, some 40 years before this edict by James VII, funds had been bequeathed to the inhabitants of Canongate to erect a church in the Burgh - and these funds had never been spent. This money was therefore used to build Canongate Kirk and a Kirkyard was laid out within its grounds shortly after building work commenced in 1688. 1 Development It has been ruminated whether interments may have occurred on this site before the construction of the Kirk or the landscaping of the Kirkyard2 as all burial rights within the church had been removed from the parishioners of the Canongate in the 1670s, when the Abbey Church had became the chapel of the King.3 The earliest known plan of the Kirkyard dates to 1765 (Figure 1), and depicts a rectilinear area on the northern side of Canongate burgh with arboreal planting 1 John Gifford et al., Edinburgh, The Buildings of Scotland: Pevsner Architectural Guides (London : Penguin, 1991). -

Scottish Missionaries and the Circumcision Controversy in Kenya 1900-1960
International Review of Scottish Studies Vol. 28 2003 Kenneth Mufaka SCOTTISH MISSIONARIES AND THE CIRCUMCISION CONTROVERSY IN KENYA 1900-1960 t the turn of the century, the British High Commis- sioner in East Africa set up various areas in which A Christian missionaries were allowed exclusive influence. Scottish missionaries served the largest and most politically astute tribe in Kenya, the Kikuyu. Scottish educa- tion, combining a theoretical base with vocational training, attracted the best and the brightest of Kikuyu youths. This type of education provided a basis for future employment in government and industry. Jomo Kenyatta and Mbui Koinanage, both future nationalist leaders of Kenya, were converts and protégés of Scottish missionaries. However, in 1929, a sudden rift occurred between the Kikuyu Christian elders and congregations on one hand and their Scottish missionary patrons on the other side. The rift came about when the Scottish missionaries insisted that all Kikuyu Christians should take an oath against female initiation. Two thirds of the Kikuyu Christians left the mission church to form their own nationalist oriented churches. The rise of nationalistic feeling among Kenyans can be traced to this controversy. The issue of female circum- cision seems to have touched on all the major ingredients that formed the basis of African nationalist alienation from colo- nial rule. This article argues that the drama of 1929 was a rehearsal of the larger drama of the Mau Mau in 1950-1960 that put an end to colonial rule in Kenya. Though initiation practices were widespread in Kenya and the neighboring Sudan, the Scottish missionaries were unaware of them until 1904. -

12 TWO ASPECTS OF GAVIN DOUGLASO Gavin Douglas was born to be conservative. Embedded in feudalism and the pre Counter Reformation church he was not the kind of person to cause a ripple in history. Literature gave him his fame. There single handed with his translation of Vergil's Aeneid he brought Scotland into the Renaissance. History robbed him of the influence he might have had. The manuscripts of his Aeneid were put away and forgotten, and by the time they were brought to light his language had become obsolete, so now a not infrequent response to the mention of his name is 'Who's he?'. 'He' was two years younger than James IV and finished his Aeneid translation in 1513, the same year as Flodden. Flodden was especially tragic because it came at a time when the nobles, of whom so many fell, were still very important to Scotland. In England and France feudalism might be looking at the beginning of the end because substitution of money for service was making barons no longer indispensable, but in Scotland not only was Lowland feudalism influenced by Highland clan ideals but the continual succession to the throne of minors had nobles playing an indispensable if not always concerted part in government. When Gavin Douglas was a boy feudalism was fighting fit. James III was the king who upset the nobles by preferring the company of a group of commoners to theirs. He more than upset them when he conferred a title on his architect friend Cochrane. Cochrane not only upgraded his attire and took to going round with a small entourage, which after all was only airs and graces, but he also interposed himself between the king and petitioners. -

Vision 2019 Updating you on the Greyfriars Community Welcome/Fáilte! It has been two years since the Greyfriars Review was first published. Much has been happening in the Greyfriars community and therefore there is a lot to report! ‘Vision 2019’ aims to give you an update on what we have been doing and to outline future plans. Worship, the arts and community outreach are centered at our three locations – Greyfriars Kirk (GK), the Grassmarket Community Project (GCP) and the Greyfriars Charteris Centre (GCC). They are managed independently, but key members are common to all three organisations so the Greyfriars ethos and ideals are maintained. With enlarged teams, we are taking on more work and responsibilities within the parish and wider community. As with any organisation we are very dependent on our dedicated members, congregation, volunteers and staff to make things happen and are therefore very grateful to them all. We welcome new faces to be part of our community and if you would like to get involved, we will find a place for you. The attribution to David I of the establishment of most of the Scottish episcopal sees has, if only through repetition, become a convention. Yet, while historians have bee generan ni l agreement about David's work, they have differed profoundly as to the details. A very recent writer has gone so far as to remark, "Before David's time St Andrews was the only bishopric Scotlann i d proper addedmorr e o h ; x esi probably eight." 1 Other modern historians have allowe r thredo thao e tw tsee s were founde e reigth nn i d of David's predecessor, Alexander I.2 The older historians and chroniclers were less confident about the extent of David's work.
