Political Life and Prisons in Turkey: A Research on the ‘Operations Back to Life’, Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2018. Political crime is a nonconcurrent concept that is entirely dependent on time, venue and conjuncture. In this sense, the sanctions applied to political criminals have been circumstantial and accordingly, incarceration techniques in Turkey varied. Military coup administrations, during which the number of political criminals peaked, have been the turning points of incarceration practices of political prisoners. Isolation started in ward - type prisons ended up with incarceration in F - type prisons. Transition to F type prisons had repercussions both in prisons and in public, which resulted in protests and death fasts against isolation. Finally the Operations ‘Back to Life’ conducted on 19 December 2000 have been the last phase of the transition to F type prisons. This study aims to clarify the operations conducted on prisons, hunger strikes, death fasts, and other resistance in prisons, as well as the ones against isolation in the process of the Operations ‘Back to Life’. Keywords Operations ‘Back to Life’, prison, jail, F type prison, political crime, political prisoner, hunger strike, death fast, operation, incarceration vii İÇİNDEKİLER KABUL VE ONAY……………………………………………………………………………....i BİLDİRİM………………………………………………………………………………………..ii YAYIMLAMA VE FİKRİ MÜLKİYET HAKLARI BEYANI..............................................iii ETİK BEYAN..................................................................................................................iv TEŞEKKÜR……………….………………………………………………………….………...v ÖZET……………………………………………………………………………………………vi ABSTRACT…………………………………………………………………………………....vii İÇİNDEKİLER………………………………………………………………………………...viii KISALTMALAR DİZİNİ…………………………………………………...…………………..xi GİRİŞ…………………………………………………………………………................….…1 1.BÖLÜM : KOLEKTİF POLİTİK ŞİDDET VE FEDA………………...…………..………5 1.1. This study investigates the high-risk environments of the two notorious military prisons: Mamak and Diyarbakir Prisons between 1980 and 1985. These two military prisons: Mamak Prison, where Turkish revolutionaries were incarcerated and Diyarbakir Prison, where Kurdish revolutionaries were incarcerated, were infamous for the torture and level of repression implemented by the military junta. The aim of the military junta was to dissolve revolutionary organizations and military prisons were one of the state institutions that were used to realize this aim.

  • The Formation of Socialist Masculinities in Turkey in the 1970S
BETWEEN DISSIDENCE AND HEGEMONY: THE FORMATION OF SOCIALIST MASCULINITIES IN TURKEY IN THE 1970s By Sercan Cinar Submitted to Central European University Department of Gender Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of European Master in Women’s and Gender History Supervisor: Professor Francisca de Haan CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2016 ABSTRACT This thesis analyzes the formation of a specific mode of masculinities, which I call socialist masculinities, in the period of the socialist movement’s explosive growth in Turkey between 1974 and 1980. It discusses the gender politics of the socialist movement in relation to the formation of political masculinities among socialist men. Additionally, the thesis investigates the ways in which socialist men appropriated a hegemonic form of masculinity while addressing the oppression of women as part of socialism’s political agenda. I take two radical left-wing organizations in Turkey during the 1970s as my case studies: the first one is named Devrimci Yol [Revolutionary Path] whose ideology was based on Marxism-Leninism but can be also defined as ‘left populism,’ and the second one is Türkiye Komünist Partisi [The Communist Party of Turkey, TKP], a pro-Soviet Union party that espoused the Marxism- Leninism advanced by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The sources I used included secondary literature, 1970s political publications, and oral history interviews. This thesis argues that large-scale contemporary political violence encouraged male bonding among the male socialist activists. Moreover, it points out the implications of the populist discourse, which reinforced hegemonic notions of gender differences, on the formation of socialist masculinities in Turkey in the 1970s.
