I worked with him for about seven years and am very indebted to him for a wonderful learning experience. I feel lucky to have watched him do his research work and to have learnt much about teaching. I am very thankful for his support and guidance and the way he managed to offer me a relaxed and friendly working environment. There are a great number of people without whose support I could simply not have finished this work. The most direct contribution came from the staff of libraries and research centres; I am especially indebted to everyone working in the IISH in Amsterdam and TÜSTAV in Istanbul. In particular I would like to thank Zülfikar Özdoğan, the head of the Turkish collection, who not only helped me through the rich Turkish collection and brought to my atten- tion some of the rare or ‘forgotten’ material but kindly agreed to participate in an interview to complement the written material. I thank as well Mehmet Emin Yıldırım, who has very carefully and with dedication read the work and offered valuable questions and insights. Even though he does not share most of my opinions, he was always ready to offer his kind help. The interviews I undertook in the process of organizing this work were perhaps the most exhilarating aspect of the study. It has been a privilege and an honour for me to have had an opportunity to talk with Mihri Belli, Sevim Belli, Ertuğrul Kürkçü, Ruhi Koç, Nihat Sargın, Mehmet Emin Yıldırım, Suat Şükrü Kundakçı, Mustafa Yalçiner, Bozkurt Nuhoğlu and Zülfikar Özdoğan. I am very grateful to Fahri Aral, who organized most of these interviews and kindly offered his support and comments. Last, but definitely not least, I thank all my friends and relatives in Leiden, Boston (USA) and in Turkey and above all my parents, my sister Sıla and my husband Mete Karadağ for their encouragement, trust and support, always being there when I need them most. More enigmatic than the Islamic revolution itself were the aims of its supporters, although most of the opposition groups had explicitly stated their objectives in their publications long before the revolution. But the tightening censorship in Iran had forced the whole spectrum of the opposition to publish abroad. The evasive nature of dissident literature makes bibliographical control, and acquisition in general, extremely difficult. In the case of the Iranian revolution we are fortunate that "W.H. Behn has taken on the formidable task of listing (in his bibliographies) every publication of an anti-Pahlavi nature in Persian, or in other languages about Iran, published outside Iran between 1962 and the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979. The measure of his success is that he has amassed a total of some 800 books and pamphlets... [The ] work... will be an indispensable tool for anyone studying the recent history of Iran and the sources of the opposition to the Shah that led to the revolution of 1979" (Prof.

  • Celebrating the Centenary of the Communist Party of Iran
Celebrating the Centenary of the Communist Party of Iran Document of the Enlarged Plenary Meeting of Central Committee (Feb. 2020) Dear Comrades, June 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Iran. Although the seeds of the labour and social democracy movement in our homeland were planted and grown during the Constitutional Revolution (1906) - and had a decisive impact on its development and victory - the Iranian labour and communist movement in the form of an organised and cohesive party formally began in June 1920 with the founding of the Communist Party of Iran led by the prominent figure of the Constitutional Revolution, Haydar Amo-Oghli (also known as Haydar Khan). The history of the left and Marxist ideas in Iran dates back to the late 19th century and early 20th century. With the rapid growth of industry and the development of the capitalist mode of production, Marx’s teachings found their way to Iran. The social and political arena of that period could be summarised, within the historic development of Iranian society, as the transition from feudalism to capitalism. The nascent capitalism of that time was growing, albeit sluggishly, while in parallel the birth and formation of the working class was taking shape. In the late 19th century, under the influence and impact of progressive left-wing views, the anti- dictatorship struggle grew significantly, and a growing number of people began to join the revolutionary struggle. Abdolhossein Agāhi, our martyred comrade and a prominent historian, wrote in his book, “The History of [political]Parties in Iran”, about the growth of socialism in Iran: “For the first time in Iran, in [an edition Figure 1: Haydar Amo- Ogghli, Leader of the of] the newspaper “Iran” (March 1917) an article from Communist Party of Iran, 1920 “Akhtar” newspaper (printed in Istanbul) - [originally published] on the occasion of the 9th anniversary of the Paris Commune (March 18, 1871) - [was reprinted] in which socialist ideas were introduced [to Iran].

This study investigates the high-risk environments of the two notorious military prisons: Mamak and Diyarbakir Prisons between 1980 and 1985. These two military prisons: Mamak Prison, where Turkish revolutionaries were incarcerated and Diyarbakir Prison, where Kurdish revolutionaries were incarcerated, were infamous for the torture and level of repression implemented by the military junta. The aim of the military junta was to dissolve revolutionary organizations and military prisons were one of the state institutions that were used to realize this aim.

Moreover, the development of social movements other than the working class after the 1960s further sidelined traditional parties. The anti-capitalist movements in the 1970s and 1980s were looking for new political formations.

Not quite in, but via Europe. Russia and Turkey are both multicultural societies which border mainland Europe. Chal- lenged by European industrialisation and cultural achievements of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, intellectuals and elites in both countries reacted by initiating discus- sions on their own (under)development, its causes and potential solutions. This tradi- tion continued into the twentieth century as well. Fascination and rejection are two interwoven, characteristic features of Turkish and Russian century-long preoccupation with European ideas. Even Turkish-Russian bilateral relations and the reception of Rus- sian thought in Turkey cannot be read without awareness of the ‘European’ aspect. We argue that the French and English language was an important medium that enabled the cultural transfer from Russia to Turkey throughout the twentieth century.

This statement is also valid for this master thesis. In this research I had the help of Turkish artists, art historians, and friends, who informed me through conversations, invited me for performances and guided me through Istanbul while translating potential political statements. ! ! THE INTERFAITH INDUSTRY ! SAMUEL WESTROP" Stand for Peace © November 2013 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY “Over the next decade, religious extremists will, undoubtedly, continue to foster violence and hatred in Britain. It is alarming, then, that the proposed solution to such intolerance and bloodshed should be delegated to taxpayer-funded interfaith networks partly governed by the extremists themselves.”# ➡ Interfaith Extremism" Interfaith dialogue initiatives have been extensively infiltrated and exploited by extreme Islamist groups aligned with Jamaat-e-Islami and the Muslim Brotherhood. The former head of the MI6, Sir Richard Dearlove, has described the Muslim Brotherhood as being "at heart, a terrorist organisation”. A number of Jamaat-e-Islami officials in the UK, meanwhile, have been convicted in Bangladesh for their involvement in acts of genocide during the 1971 Independence War. Although Jamaat-e-Islami enjoys negligible support in Bangladesh, it has dominated Muslim representation within British interfaith activities. Consequently, moderate Muslims have been left without a !voice. Interfaith provides extremist groups with access to politicians and policy makers." ➡ Interfaith Exploited" Taxpayer-funded interfaith groups willingly provide extreme Islamists with a platform. Senior interfaith officials include Manazir Ahsan, who coordinated the riots against Salman Rushdie and directs the Islamic Foundation, a Taliban-linked publisher of radical Islamist tracts in the UK. Groups such as the Joseph Interfaith Foundation work closely with extremist
