Stakeholders in the travel and tourism as well as meetings industries are still trying to make sense of the impact of the outbreak on their business, as airlines continue to cut flights,more travel restrictions are set, and tradeshows deliberate their continuity plans. The Covid-19 outbreak has brought out a lot of good, bad and ugly in people, and their responses have no doubt impacted the travel, tour- ism and meetings businesses. Ugly – panic is feeding racism and xenophobia, resulting in stories of verbal and physical attacks on Chinese and Asians around the world. The fear of being targeted at home or abroad is weakening travel senti- ments as much as the worry of infection. Bad – the spread of sensational and fake news around the outbreak continues to influence travel decisions, strangling travel and tourism businesses and all others linked to it like retail, F&B and transportation. But wait, there is good too, and I’ve saved the best for last. Even as travel and tourism companies struggle to stay afloat, many have found it in their heart to support the external community and their own people. Shangri-La Hotel, Wuhan prepared and delivered over 1,000 meals every day to strained local healthcare workers, while Royal Caribbean Cruises and Fosun Holdings, which owns hospitality firms like Thomas Cook China and Club Med, donated medical supplies to the Chinese government and Chinese medical institutions respectively. As job security flounders, leaders have stepped in to take care of their folks. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts Singapore has programmes to ensure its staff continue to feel busy and secure about their employ- ment, while the CEO of Bespoke Travel Company, with operations in Beijing and Shanghai, worked to find alternative sources of income for her team. Love is also all around in Thailand. Local MICE stakeholders, who no doubt are facing difficulties themselves because of event cancellations and postponements, have offered to financially support the national CVB in its destination promotion campaigns. More importantly, I saw how sport can be a force for good as epitomised by through kin-ball.     7 Sport in Asia: Globalization, Glocalization, Asianization Peter Horton James Cook University, Townsville Australia 1. Introduction Sport is now a truly global cultural institution, one that is no longer the preserve of occidental culture or dominated and organized by Western nations, the growing presence and power of non-occidental culture and individual nations now makes it a truly globalized product and commodity. The insatiable appetite for sport of the enormous Asian markets is redirecting the global flow of sport, with the wider Asia Pacific region now providing massive new audiences for televised sports as the economies of the region continue their growth. This chapter will consider the process of sport’s development in the Asian and the wider Asia Pacific context through the latter phases of the global sportization process (Maguire, 1999). As the locus of the centre of gravity of global geopolitical power is shifting to the Asia Pacific region away from the Euro-Atlantic region the hegemonic sports are now assuming a far more cosmopolitan character and are being reshaped by Asian influences. This has been witnessed in the major football leagues in Europe, particularly the English Premier League and is manifest in the Indian Premier League cricket competition, which has spectacularly changed the face of cricket world-wide through what could be called its ‘Bollywoodization’(Rajadhyaskha, 2003). Perhaps this reflects ‘advanced’ sportization (Maguire, 1999) with the process going beyond the fifth global sportization phase in sport’s second globalization with ‘Asianization’ becoming a major cultural element vying with the previously dominant cultural traditions of Westernization and Americanization? This notion will be discussed in this paper by looking at Asia’s impact on the development of sport, through the three related lenses of: sportization; the global sports formation and, the global media-sport comple.

Wendy Chew Submitted 31 August 2006 2 Abstract My research seeks to understand ways in which English-educated Chinese women in cosmopolitan Singapore bolstered their identity while living under the influences of Confucian values, patriarchal nation-building and racial concerns. My thesis examines women who have themselves been lost in translation when they were co-opted into the creation of a viable state after 1965. Often women are treated as adjuncts in the patriarchal state, particularly since issues of gender are not treated with the equality they deserve in the neo-Confucian discourse. This thesis takes an unconventional approach to how women have been viewed by utilizing primary sources including Her World and Female magazines from the 1960s and 1990s, and subsequent material from the blogosphere. I analyze images of women in these magazines to gain an understanding of how notions of gender and communitarianism/race intersect. By looking at government-sponsored advertising, my work also investigates the kind of messages the state was sending out to these women readers.
