    INFO 588 BENI SLIMANE « Non au 19 mars » BENI SLIMANE Dans le centre algérien et culminant à 584 mètres d’altitude le village de BENI SLIMANE est situé à 21 km au Sud- ouest de TABLAT ; à 40 km à l’Ouest de BIR RABALOU sur la RN 18 et à 70 Km de MEDEA. Nous donnerons à l'ensemble des montagnes au Nord et au Sud de la vallée de BERROUAGHIA, le nom de monts du TITTERI du nom de l'ancien beylick, dont MEDEA était le chef-lieu. Ce nom que l'historien arabe Ibn-KHALDOUN donne au KEF LAKHDAR, situé à moitié distance de BOGHAR et d'AUMALE, n'est plus guère usité; mais il nous a paru d'autant préférable au point de vue synthétique, qu'entre les termes locaux le choix est singulièrement embarrassant. Au-delà des montagnes abruptes et ravinées qui dominent au Sud la plaine de la MITIDJA, le plateau argileux et nu, de MEDEA, au relief tourmenté, découpé par les profonds sillons des rivières qui s’éloignent vers l’Ouest, le Nord et l’Est, a de nombreuses sources et qui n’est pas dépourvu de terres propices aux céréales. Il forme un passage, d’ailleurs assez difficile, entre la vallée du CHELIFF et les trois plaines des BENI SLIMANE, des ARIB et de BOUIRA, qui se suivent de l’Ouest à l’Est, représentant une ancienne vallée, à une altitude de 600-500 mètres. La première, qui nous concerne BENI SLIMANE, souffre de la sécheresse. On traverse ensuite la plaine des ARIB, très bonnes terres, mais peu cultivées; la route passe par les Frênes, BIR RABALOU, LES TREMBLES, petits villages de colonisation, pour pénétrer dans la cuvette dont AUMALE occupe le centre.

Abad A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy Graduate Department of Classics University of Toronto @ copyright by John Elmer Abad (2018) John Elmer Abad Doctor of Philosophy Department of Classics University of Toronto 2018 Abstract This dissertation examines the strategies employed by Tertullian in the construction and articulation of Christian identity in the pluralistic Roman North African society. The focus will be the apologetic works of Tertullian, the Ad Martyras, the Ad Nationes and the Apologeticum written around 197 A.D. Popular biases against Christians, the Romanizing tendencies of local elites in North Africa, the marginalization of sub-elites, the influence of cultural and intellectual revolution known as the Second Sophistic Movement, and the political ideologies and propaganda of emperor Septimius Severus – all these influenced Tertullian’s attempt to construct and articulate a Christian identity capable of engaging the ever changing socio- political landscape of North African at the dawn of the third century A.D. I shall examine select areas in antiquity where identities were explored, contested and projected namely, socio- cultural, religious, and political. I have identified four spheres which I refer to as “sites” of identity construction, namely paideia, the individual, community and “religion”. Chapter One provides a brief survey of the various contexts of Tertullian’s literary production. It includes a short description of the socio-political landscape during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus, a brief history of Christianity in Roman North Africa, an introduction to the person of Tertullian, and his place within the “apologetic” tradition.
