Translation of Material Culture Elements in Buket Uzuner's Novel

Because of this close relation between the two concepts; translation studies have recently put emphasis on the study of translation and culture. The aim of this study is to descriptively analyse translation of material culture elements in Buket Uzuner’s novel Uzun Beyaz Bulut-Gelibolu translated into English as The Long White Cloud-Gallipoli by Pelin Thornhill Arıner within the framework of domestication and foreignization strategies. The study focuses on determining how translation procedures by Peter Newmark that are used in translation of cultural elements affect the governing translation strategy, namely domestication and foreignization in translation of the selected novel.The procedures are divided into two strategies as domesticating and foreignizing strategies. Naturalization, Cultural equivalent, Functional Equivalent, Descriptive Equivalent, Synonymy, Modulation, Translation Label, Compensation, Componential Analysis, Reduction and Expansion and Paraphrase are analysed under domestication strategy while Literal Translation, Transference, Through Translation and Paraphrase, Notes, Additions are analysed under foreignization strategy. The results indicate that out of 75 material culture elements, domestication was used 39 times while foreignization was used 36 times and there is no prevailing translation strategy in the translation Keywords: translation, culture, Newmark, procedures, domestication, foreignization 1. -

Southwest Turkey A Greentours Trip Report 21st March – 2nd April 2010 Led by Başak Gardner Day 1 Journey to Antalya 21.03.10 I met the group at the airport and directly drove to the hotel. It was around 10 pm. Day 2 Journey to Ibradı 22.03.10 With good news from the meteorology the tour started. Alpine Swifts were flying around and Yellow-vented Bulbuls were singing from the roof as we were having our breakfast by the pool. A very short visit to the bank to change and get some money gave a chance for the group to take some pictures of the castle walls and gate. We even did some botanizing. The walls of the very old houses in the old town were almost covered by Cymbalaria longipes. We were on the road before 10 am and our first stop was by a graveyard where Pyrus serikensis, which is an endangered endemic pear tree, was in full bloom. But the main plant we were looking for was a bit over, however we managed to find some fresh reticulately-patterned Iris masia. Along with these were some Muscari comosum, Anemone coronaria and a single plant of Gladiolus italicus. Val spotted our first butterfly an Eastern Festoon and both Large White and Orange Tip were also seen as well as Danford’s Lizard. We made another stop both to have lunch and to look for some Ophrys. Along an old track by the picnic site we encountered many Ophrys mammosa spikes in good flower. We had a good lunch with some Turkish tea our driver prepared for us among the Bellis annua flowers. -
New Ten Varieties and Five Subspecies of Crocus Baalbekensis K. Addam & M

Bou-Hamdan (Iridaceae) endemic to Lebanon added to the Lebanese flora Abstract Volume 4 Issue 6 - 2019 Fifteen new world record Crocus baalbekensis var. decorus, fluctus, flavo-album, 1 2 makniensis, youninensis, rasbaalbekensis, rihaensis, shaathensis, shlifensis, tnaiyetensis, Khodr Addam, Mounir Bou-Hamdan, Jihad subsp. ahlansis, anthopotamus, fakihansis, harbatansis, and rassomensis, joined the Takkoush,3 Kamal Hout4 Lebanese flora and particularly the Iridaceae family. They were found in Baalbek-Hermel 1Head, Integrative and Environmental Research Center, AUL from North Baalbek to Hermel. All of them display C. Baalbekensis but vary in many Beirut, Lebanon 2 taxonomic details. The validation for the existence of these new Varieties and Subspecies Integrative Research and Environmental Center, AUL Beirut, were verified by illustrated morphologic descriptions and observations were based on fresh Lebanon 3 materials. Recently discovered fossils document their existence for at least 15 Ma. The last common ancestor of all orchids has been estimated to exist about 80 Ma ago (Ramirez et al. 2007, Gustafsson et al. 2010). Orchids are cosmopolitan, distributed on all continents and a great variety of habitats, ranging from deserts and swamps to arctic regions. Two large groups can be distinguished: Epiphytic and epilithic orchids attach themselves with aerial roots to trees or stones, mostly halfway between the ground and the upper canopy where they absorb water through the velamen of their roots. -

Rare Plant Fact Sheet PMORC2B0J0 Maine Department of Conservation Natural Areas Program Spiranthes lucida (H.H. Eat.) Ames Shining Ladies'-tresses Habitat: Alluvial or damp rocky shores and slopes, rich damp thickets and meadows. [Non- tidal rivershore (non-forested, seasonally wet); Open wetland, not coastal nor rivershore (non-forested, wetland)] Range: New Brunswick to Ontario, south to Virginia, upland North Carolina and Tennessee, Indiana, and Illinois. Phenology: Flowers June - July, earliest Spiranthes to flower in our region. Ladies-tresses are leafy stemmed orchids with small, mostly white, flowers borne in spiralled racemes. Family: Orchidaceae Illustration from Britton & Brown’s Illustrated Flora of the Northern United States and Canada, 2nd ed. Aids to Identification: Spiranthes lucida has 3-5 erect, oblanceolate to oblong, shiny green, basal leaves. Its short, compact floral spike has 3-4 ranks of flowers. A broad yellow spot on the protruding lip brightens the waxy white tubular flowers. The flowers appear late-June to mid-July, earlier than most other species of Spiranthes. Ecological characteristics: Spiranthes lucida seems to prefer circumneutral damp soil, and may often be found on calcareous gravelly shores. It may be locally abundant but seems infrequent throughout its range, perhaps because it is easily overlooked growing among taller grassy weeds. One author points out that it is usually found in disturbed areas where the water supply is plentiful, as in wet cow pastures growing on hummocks of mud thrust up beside deep cow prints. Another author reports that attempts to grow S. lucida in home gardens have often failed because it "soon falls prey to fungi and slugs which are especially fond of it". -

Die Abgrenzung von Gattungen oder anderen höheren Taxa erfolgt nach modernen Ansätzen weitestgehend auf der Rekonstruktion der Stammesgeschichte (Stamm- baum-Theorie), mit Hilfe von großen Daten-Matrizen. Wenngleich aufgrund des Fortschritts in der DNS-Sequenzierungstechnik immer mehr Merkmale in der DNS identiiziert werden, ist es mindestens genauso wichtig, die Anzahl der analysierten Planzen zu erhöhen, um genaue Zuordnungen zu erschließen. Die größere Vielfalt mathematischer Methoden zur Erstellung von Stammbäumen führt nicht gleichzeitig zu verbesserten Methoden zur Beurteilung der Stabilität der Zweige innerhalb der Stammbäume. Ein weiterer kontraproduktiver Trend ist die wachsende Tendenz, diverse Datengruppen mit einzelnen Matrizen zu verquicken, die besser einzeln analysiert würden, um festzustellen, ob sie ähnliche Schlussfolgerungen bezüglich der Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse liefern. Ein Stammbaum zur Abgrenzung höherer Taxa muss nicht so robust sein, wie ein Stammbaum, aus dem man Details des Evo- lutionsmusters -
