The Superlative Artistry of Japan
The Superlative Artistry of Japan gikou_fix.indd 1 2018/02/28 21:41 Foreword The Japan Foundation is a specialized public agency, which was established in 1972 with the goal of promoting international understanding through cultural exchange. The foundation organizes a variety of projects in three primary areas of activity: arts and cultural exchange, Japanese-language education abroad, and Japanese studies and intellectual exchange. In the field of visual arts, part of our arts and cultural exchange program, we strive to introduce Japanese art through reciprocal exchanges between Japan and other countries. As part of these activities, we have regularly organized traveling exhibitions, which tour the world. These events are made up of works from the foundation’s own collection and deal with a diverse range of subjects including crafts, painting, photography, architecture, and design. Some 20 exhibitions are constantly underway and are held at some 100 cities every year. On this occasion we are pleased to present “The Superlative Artistry of Japan”, a traveling exhibition that presents a cohesive collection of works and materials from various different genres that each place great emphasis on highly skilled techniques, ingenious expressions and concepts, and a high level of perfection that take viewers by surprise. Introducing elaborate Meiji era (1868 – 1912) kogei works that played a significant role in initiating the Japonism trend in 19th century Europe as a starting point, the exhibition in addition to numerous contemporary works of superlative artistry, also comprises capsule toy figures and food samples that illustrate a strong commitment to craftsmanship. Through this exhibition we intend to introduce the outstanding techniques of each work as well as the worlds of expression that even serve to surpass such skill and finesse, in hopes that viewers will be able to appreciate this specific part of Japan’s creative culture that honors craftsmanship and has constantly shown a thorough sense of meticulousness and devotion towards production processes. -
Powerful Warriors and Influential Clergy Interaction and Conflict Between the Kamakura Bakufu and Religious Institutions
UNIVERSITY OF HAWAllllBRARI Powerful Warriors and Influential Clergy Interaction and Conflict between the Kamakura Bakufu and Religious Institutions A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'I IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN HISTORY MAY 2003 By Roy Ron Dissertation Committee: H. Paul Varley, Chairperson George J. Tanabe, Jr. Edward Davis Sharon A. Minichiello Robert Huey ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Writing a doctoral dissertation is quite an endeavor. What makes this endeavor possible is advice and support we get from teachers, friends, and family. The five members of my doctoral committee deserve many thanks for their patience and support. Special thanks go to Professor George Tanabe for stimulating discussions on Kamakura Buddhism, and at times, on human nature. But as every doctoral candidate knows, it is the doctoral advisor who is most influential. In that respect, I was truly fortunate to have Professor Paul Varley as my advisor. His sharp scholarly criticism was wonderfully balanced by his kindness and continuous support. I can only wish others have such an advisor. Professors Fred Notehelfer and Will Bodiford at UCLA, and Jeffrey Mass at Stanford, greatly influenced my development as a scholar. Professor Mass, who first introduced me to the complex world of medieval documents and Kamakura institutions, continued to encourage me until shortly before his untimely death. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to them. In Japan, I would like to extend my appreciation and gratitude to Professors Imai Masaharu and Hayashi Yuzuru for their time, patience, and most valuable guidance. -

The Abode of Fancy, of Vacancy, and of the Unsymmetrical
The University of Iceland School of Humanities Japanese Language and Culture The Abode of Fancy, of Vacancy, and of the Unsymmetrical How Shinto, Daoism, Confucianism, and Zen Buddhism Interplay in the Ritual Space of Japanese Tea Ceremony BA Essay in Japanese Language and Culture Francesca Di Berardino Id no.: 220584-3059 Supervisor: Gunnella Þorgeirsdóttir September 2018 Abstract Japanese tea ceremony extends beyond the mere act of tea drinking: it is also known as chadō, or “the Way of Tea”, as it is one of the artistic disciplines conceived as paths of religious awakening through lifelong effort. One of the elements that shaped its multifaceted identity through history is the evolution of the physical space where the ritual takes place. This essay approaches Japanese tea ceremony from a point of view that is architectural and anthropological rather than merely aesthetic, in order to trace the influence of Shinto, Confucianism, Daoism, and Zen Buddhism on both the architectural elements of the tea room and the different aspects of the ritual. The structure of the essay follows the structure of the space where the ritual itself is performed: the first chapter describes the tea garden where guests stop before entering the ritual space of the tea room; it also provides an overview of the history of tea in Japan. The second chapter figuratively enters the ritual space of the tea room, discussing how Shinto, Confucianism, Daoism, and Zen Buddhism merged into the architecture of the ritual space. Finally, the third chapter looks at the preparation room, presenting the interplay of the four cognitive systems within the ritual of making and serving tea. -

Medieval Kyoto • Medieval Japan — Creative Energies in the “Dark Ages” — KCJS James L. McClain Spring 2017 WF 1:10~2:40 In the Western imagination, the terms “middle ages” and “medieval” often conjure up images of backwardness and stagnation. In contrast, Japan pulsated with political, economic, and cultural creativity during its chūsei epoch (中世時代) from the end of the twelfth century to the middle of the sixteenth. This course will use Kyoto as a focal point to explore key topics central to Japan’s medieval revolution: (•) the construction of new forms of political authority, namely the samurai-led shogunate that shared power with the Heavenly Sovereign and court aristocracy, (•) the advent of fresh cultural norms, centering on warrior values and the ethos of the detached hermit, (•) the appearance of Zen and popular Buddhist religious sects, (•) the intersection of noh performances and the innovative “Zen arts” (specifically the tea ceremony, landscape gardening, ink painting, and flower arranging) with samurai governance as an expression of rule through “soft- power,” (•) the emergence of commoners as wielders of economic and cultural influence, and (•) the destruction of Kyoto and its subsequent resurgence in the sixteenth century as a city shared by aristocrats, warriors, merchants, and artisans. In addition to expanding our knowledge of the medieval period — especially as expressed in the centrality of the urban experience to the unfolding of Japanese history — this course embraces the following overarching goals: • To deepen our -

THE WIND OF VIRTUE OVER THE REALM: THE CONCEPT OF FENG AS A LEGITIMIZING MEDIUM IN HANAZONO’S PREFACES TO THE FŪGAWAKASHŪ by Yoon-Kyung Kim B.A., The University of British Columbia, 2002 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2017 © Yoon-Kyung Kim, 2017 Abstract This thesis explores the political messages contained in the seventeenth imperial anthology of Japanese poetry (waka), the Fūgawakashū (1346). Through reaffirmation of values presented in previous anthologies, imperial waka anthologies served as a source of mutual legitimization for the commissioning regime and the compiling poets. I examine how Retired Emperor Hanazono (1297-1348, r. 1308-1318), as the head of the Jimyōin faction and the guardian of the Kyōgoku school of poetry, establishes ties between the Fūgawakashū and canonical texts of Japan and China to legitimize his Kyōgoku-Jimyōin faction against the rival Nijō-Daikakuji faction. I argue that Hanazono uses the Confucian concept of feng (風, J. fū) as the organizing principle for his claims in the Fūgawakashū. I discuss the origin of the title “fūga,” which pays homage to the Chinese anthology, the Shijing 詩經 (c. 600 BCE). In the two prefaces composed in kana and mana in the fashion of Kokinwakashū (c. 905) and ShinKokinwakashū (1205), Hanazono identifies governance through the virtue of great men, or feng, as the true function of poetry. By reiterating some arguments from the Kokinwakashū and ShinKokinwakashū prefaces and omitting some aspects to which the Nijō school adheres, Hanazono weaves a poetic lineage that connects the Shijing, Kokinwakashū tradition, and the Fūgawakashū. -
