Roux Pretoria 2009 S T R E L I T Z I A This series has replaced Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa and Annals of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens which SANBI inherited from its predecessor organisations. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It sym- bolises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustain- able use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. Montes, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, E-2WO Madrid, Spain Received 23 January 1995, accepted 21 March 1995 Spores from two diploid taxa, Asplenium onopteris L. and A. cuneifolium Viv., and two allotetraploid taxa, A. adiantum-nigrum L. var. adiantum-nigrum and A. adiantum- nigrum var. silesiacum (Milde) Viane & Reichstein, were cultured in three different types of soil. Except for A. cuneifolium, the spores germinated after ten days. The general pattern of development for the gametophytes was similar in all four taxa, following the Aspidium-type. We found that the length and density of marginal hairs differ at the specific level. The formation sequence of the gametangia studied in the three Iberian taxa was the same, and is independent of the soil type. Our results indicate that the spores in this group of taxa are able to germinate and develop mature gametophytes in different kinds of soil, and that they can produce sporophytes. Twelve Pteridophyta species belonging to four families were recorded, Aspleniaceae being the most represented family with the largest number of species. Fern that was more sensitive to light and humidity than other plants was observed to grow preferentially in the mesic forests containing Fagus orientalis and Abies nor- dmanniana subsp. equi-trojani, on the calcerous, metamorphic schist rock and soil farmed from these rocks. In this study area, Asplenium scolopendrium ssp. scolopen- drium was the most selective species and had the narrowest distribution whereas Ceterach officinarum had the widest. Key words: distribution, ecology, forest destruction, ferns, Pteridophyta INTRODUCTION The ferns belong to a rather primitive group of vascular plants and also con- tribute significantly to the number of species in the flora of forest areas (Barrington, 1993). Even though those are considered as an important component of vegetation. In general, they receive relatively little attention from biologists when compared to herbaceous vegetation, shrubs and trees in the World (Lehmann et al., 2002). Although ferns are a notable feature of Turkey flora, there are little papers pub- lished either on their ecology or on regional patterns of diversity (Parris, Fraser- Jenkins, 1980; Kaynak, 1989; Kaynak, Tuyji 1991; Yıldırımlı, 1996; Türe, Ocak 1997). -

Accepted: October 19, 2005) ABSTRACT The Sudeten flora consists of some plants we can recognize as heavy metal accumulators. Between others the- re are: Thlaspi caerulescens, Arabidopsis halleri, Armeria maritima ssp. halleri s.l. and probably the endemic fern Asplenium onopteris var. silesiaca. The authors present the concentrations of some important heavy metals mea- sured in aboveground plant dry weight. The highest concentration of zinc was 8220 ppm (Thlaspi), nickel 3100 ppm (Thlaspi), lead 83 ppm (Armeria), copper 611 ppm (Arabidopsis) and cadmium 28 ppm (Thlaspi). The concentrations depend rather on species or population specification than on ore deposit quality. There are no typi- cal hyperaccumulator among plants we have examined, but some signs of hyperaccumulation of nickel, zinc and lead could be observed. There are no typical endemic taxa, only Asplenium onopteris var. silesiaca and Armeria maritima ssp. halleri may be recognized as neoendemic taxa, but still of unclear systematic position. During the study we tried to find out why some Sudeten vascular plants do not develop heavy metals hyperaccumulation and why they are rather latent hyperaccumulators. Finally, we suggest to protect some metallicolous areas in spite they are rather territories with low plant biodiversity.
