Burke, Svante Norrhem, and Merry Wiesner-Hanks This series provides a forum for studies that investigate women, gender, and/ or sexuality in the late medieval and early modern world. The editors invite proposals for book-length studies of an interdisciplinary nature, including, but not exclusively, from the fields of history, literature, art and architectural history, and visual and material culture. Consideration will be given to both monographs and collections of essays. Chronologically, we welcome studies that look at the period between 1400 and 1700, with a focus on any part of the world, as well as comparative and global works. We invite proposals including, but not limited to, the following broad themes: methodologies, theories and meanings of gender; gender, power and political culture; monarchs, courts and power; constructions of femininity and masculinity; gift-giving, diplomacy and the politics of exchange; gender and the politics of early modern archives; gender and architectural spaces (courts, salons, household); consumption and material culture; objects and gendered power; women’s writing; gendered patronage and power; gendered activities, behaviours, rituals and fashions. Vincent Wallace dtude biograPhique et critique), at Paris, and now out of print, no apology is needed for the present brochure. Strange as it may seem, it is none the less true that no English memoir of the Composer of " Maritana " has hitherto been attempted. On this account, the present centenary year of the birth of Wallace seems an appropriate occasion to supply this deficiency. I have therefore pieced together the tangled skeins in hisromantic biography, and have endeavoured to present the facts of his career in chronological order in the following pages. ~brmuch valuable help I must express my indebtedness to Mr. Edmund Downey, Mr. W. To this list must be added the name of William Vincent VJallace, whose centenary is about to be celebrated. -

When she came to the age of marriage she was sent out to many houses where her playing and ivory manners were much admired. She sat amid the chilly circle of her accomplishments, waiting for some suitors to brave it and offer her a brilliant life. But the young men whom she met were ordinary and she gave them no encouragement, trying to console her romantic desires by eating a great deal of Turkish Delight in secret. —“A Mother”(D 136) Would he never get a home of his own? ... He might yet able to settle down in some snug corner and live happily if he could only come across some good simple-minded girl with a little of the ready. —“Two Gallants”(D 58) In “A Mother,”Mrs. Kearney recalled her maiden expectation to have “some suitors to brave it”(D 136; my emphasis). The pronoun “it”in her romantic desires certainly referred to a marriage proposal. In “Two Gallants,”Lenehar wished to settle down and he meant a happy marriage. First, it was the marriage that these two female and male characters desired. Then, after the unions, they wished that the spouse could offer them “a brilliant”and “a little of ready”life. Over and over again, Joyce depicts the phenomenon that men and women have certain romantic expectations toward marriage and the good lives guaranteed by marriage in Dubliners. However, do the romantic expectations truly promise better living standards and wealth after marriage? The answer was actually “no.”Therefore, if Dubliners have expectations, theirs are certainly false ones rather than great ones. -

University Microfilms, Inc. PREFACE From a literary perspective, the first half of the nineteenth century was an era neither of great plays nor of great dramatists. It has often been assumed that because the dramatic literature was a derelict wallowing in the heavy swells of the times, the theatre itself was foundering and unworthy of more than a cursory glance. While there may be some truth to this judgment, it is a generalization that does not do justice to what is otherwise an exciting and complex period in the history of the theatre. There have been greater periods of dramatic writing, and perhaps of individual acting or of scene design. Without doubt, the theatre had been financially stronger in other times. But in no way should this negate either the importance or vitality of the theatre in the first half of the century. The period was one of con stant transition and adaptation to new social and economic conditions. -

The Irish Ring Cycle & its Victorian Popularity Jerry Nolan The Irish Ring entered the British musical repertoire as a result of the practice of Victorian operatic companies, who often presented three very popular operettas in sequence, during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. At first, the sequence was known as the English Ring, but gradually it became better known as the Irish Ring. The operettas brought together were Michael William Balfe’s The Bohemian Girl, William Vincent Wallace’s Maritana and Julius Benedict’s The Lily of Killarney. The composers of these works never envisaged anything like such a Ring Cycle, which nevertheless became popular with music-lovers in opera houses throughout the world, and continued to be frequently performed in Britain into the twentieth century by companies like the Carl Rosa Opera Company. The Bohemian Girl was first produced at Drury Lane Theatre on November 27, 1843 when Julius Benedict was the musical director there and had invited Michael William Balfe, a much travelled Dubliner, to conduct the first performance with stage direction by Alfred Bunn. Balfe’s operetta, using the bare bones of a story which can be traced back to Cervantes, was given a hurried and somewhat misleading title because the heroine was an Austrian who had been raised as a gypsy, a fact which the English title obscures with its mistranslation of the French term ‘bohemienne’, which means ‘Gypsy Girl’, (although the operetta’s setting was, indeed, Bohemia). In spite of some harsh reviews from the London critics, The Bohemian Girl ran for more than a hundred performances and that 1 success was quickly followed by German, Italian and French performances which ensured the European-wide and American popularity of The Bohemian Girl. -

The same year he was invited by The Royal Dublin Society to conduct the “Irish Ring” (Maritana, The Bohemian Girl and The Lily of Killarney). For the occasion he was commissioned by them to make a William Vincent new edition of the full score and orchestral material of The Lily of Killarney from manuscripts found in The British Library. In 1989 he was also appointed Music Director of Our Lady!s Choral Society, a position WALLACE he still holds. Since 2001 he has been conducting the Birthday Celebration performance of Handel!s Messiah in Halle, and in 2011 he was invited to conduct the first of a series of concerts to include the complete symphonies of Haydn with the Orchestra of St Cecilia. The choir performs up to seven concerts each year and broadcasts regularly on RTÉ lyric fm.
