UMI 300 North Zeeb Road Ann Arbor, M l 48103 Copyright by Adonica Ann Sendelbach 1 99 7 ABSTRACT This dissertation demonstrates that mirroring as both a structure and a concept appears in Boris Pasternak’s first well- known cycle of poetry, Cecrpa m o s —x h g h b (My Sister—Life), and continues in his culminating work, SoKTop )KHBaro (Doctor Zhivago). Scholarship on Pasternak’s use of the mirroring motif has been limited to the study of imagery and/or phonemics as found in selected poems from Cecrpa. As this dissertation demonstrates, however, the motif is all-pervasive. Moreover, the significance of mirroring lies in the fact that in Pasternak’s world it reveals the interconnection and unity between all living beings across various boundaries and divisions. In order to emphasize this philosophical concept, Pasternak includes mirroring on different levels, i.e., mirroring structures, from the phonemic to the syntactic, from the image to the narrative, so that the various levels of mirroring, in fact, mirror each other. Thus, structure emphasizes concept and vice versa. Sources of influence on Pasternak’s use of mirroring as a structure and concept include 11 Vladimir Solovyov’s theories on sexual love as found in his treatise “The Meaning of Love” and Andre Gide’s device of mise en abyme, the duplication or mirroring of a work within itself. In addition, mirroring in the visual arts may have contributed to Pasternak’s use of the motif. Mirroring not only permeates various levels but also unites the whole of C ecrpa as the motif appears throughout the collection. The mirroring motif so prevalent in C ecrpa not only continues but also grows more complex in JKHBaro both as structure and as concept: these two works, one early and one late, are mirrors of each other. In his native Russia, Pasternak's anthology My Sister Life, is one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. Furthermore, Pasternak's theatrical translations of Goethe, Schiller, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, and William Shakespeare remain deeply popular with Russian audiences. Outside Russia, Pasternak is best known for authoring Doctor Zhivago, a novel which spans the last years of Czarist Russia and the earliest days of the Soviet Union. Banned in the USSR, Doctor Zhivago was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year, an event which both humiliated and enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In the midst of a massive campaign against him by both the KGB and the Union of Soviet Writers, Pasternak reluctantly agreed to decline the Prize. In his resignation letter to the Nobel Committee, Pasternak stated the reaction of the Soviet State was the only reason for his decision. By the time of his death from lung cancer in 1960, the campaign against Pasternak had severely damaged the international credibility of the U.S.S.R. He remains a major figure in Russian literature to this day. Furthermore, tactics pioneered by Pasternak were later continued, expanded, and refined by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and other Soviet dissidents. <b>Early Life</b> Pasternak was born in Moscow on 10 February, (Gregorian), 1890 (Julian 29 January) into a wealthy Russian Jewish family which had been received into the Russian Orthodox Church.

I told Fediakhin about the quotas the Decembrists were assigned at Ner­ chinsk according to the "Memories of Maria Volkonskaia," - three poods 1 of , ore per worker. - And pow much would our quota weigh, Vasilii Petrovich? - Fediakhin ~~ . I did a calculation - it was about eight hundred poods. - Well, Vasilii Petrovich, look how the quotas have gone up....2 If one was to choose a single quotation that defines Shalamov's manifold rela-: . tionship with Dostoevsky it will probably be this one, the passage where Dosto­ evsky's name is not even mentioned. And yet it neatly captures the nature of the distance between the House ofthe Dead, Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, and the -Kolyma Tales. The production quotas have been increased 266.666666666(6) times. This radical change in the limits of human experience sets the framework within which Shalamov sees Dostoevsky's philosophical ideas and creative de- vices. : Here I would like to say·that in my opinion the whole scope of Shalamov's Dostoevsky connections cannot be covered within the boundaries of a single arti-. cle or even a series of articles. Therefore the aim of this article is to define several interesting aspects of the problem and tentatively suggest the ways, along which those aspects might be explored.

    chapter eleven THE ‘KHAZAR’-‘VARANGIAN’ DIALOGUE IN DMITRY BYKOV’S ZhD: SOME PSYCHOANALYTICAL OBSERVATIONS Andrei Rogatchevski (University of Glasgow, Glasgow) Dmitry Bykov (b. 1967) is a proli c writer and media personality, whose two dozen books or so include poetry (Poslednee vremia [The End-time], 2006), ction (such as the prize-winning novels Orfograia [Orthography], 2003; and Evakuator [The Evacuator], 2005) and journalism (e.g. Blud truda [Lust for Labour], 2003; and Khroniki blizhaishei voiny [The Annals of the Imminent War], 2005), as well as the biographies of Boris Pasternak and Bulat Okudzhava. Bykov’s ZhD1 is an alternative history novel, published in Moscow in 2006. It took Bykov ten years to complete. According to his interview to Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty of 29 October 2007, Bykov considers ZhD his favourite undertaking, which includes ‘everything that [he] knows and understands’. At the same time, the novel’s blurb characterises it as ‘the most politically incorrect book of the new millennium’. ZhD claims that ‘any interpretation of history is acceptable’ because ‘no one knows what really happened’ and ‘all the sources have been falsi ed to some degree’.2 Russian history is depicted in ZhD as an on-going struggle between two ethnic entities, the ‘Varangians’ and the ‘Khazars’ (I prefer to introduce and keep these terms in inverted commas because they do not 1 ZhD is an abbreviation with multiple meanings. One of them assumes that the letters stand for zhivye dushi (living souls), in acknowledgement of Gogol’s epic Dead Souls (1841) that has inspired Bykov’s book (following Gogol’s example, Bykov calls ZhD a poema).

    HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION AS THE OUTCOME OF HUMAN RIGHTS MOVEMENTS Uta Gerlant “THE LAW IS OUR ONLY LANGUAGE”: SOVIET DISSIDENTS AND HUMAN RIGHTS “Adhere to the Soviet Constitution!” was one of the slogans on the banners waved at the independent Moscow demonstration on December 5, 1965 on behalf of the arrested authors Yuli Daniel and Andrei Sinyavsky. Dan- iel and Sinyavsky had published writings under pseudonyms abroad and stood accused of “anti-Soviet propa- ganda.” With the knowledge that the state had unlimited power to “violate the law behind closed doors,” some 200 protesters demanded that the trial be open to the public.1 This demonstration became an annual event. In 1977, the demonstration was moved from December 5, the anniversary of the Soviet Constitution, to December 10, the international day of human rights. Ludmilla Alexeyeva later called this the “birthday of the human rights movement.”2 The 1965 demonstration in front of the Pushkin memorial was organized by the mathematician Alexander Esenin-Volpin, who became one of the mentors of the human rights movement.3 As Vladimir Bukovsky later remembered, “Alik was the first person who met with us, who spoke to us in a serious way about Soviet law.
