Classic Poetry Series Boris Pasternak - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Boris Pasternak(10 February 1890 - 30 May 1960) Boris Leonidovich Pasternak was a Russian language poet, novelist, and literary translator. In his native Russia, Pasternak's anthology My Sister Life, is one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. Furthermore, Pasternak's theatrical translations of Goethe, Schiller, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, and William Shakespeare remain deeply popular with Russian audiences. Outside Russia, Pasternak is best known for authoring Doctor Zhivago, a novel which spans the last years of Czarist Russia and the earliest days of the Soviet Union. Banned in the USSR, Doctor Zhivago was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year, an event which both humiliated and enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In the midst of a massive campaign against him by both the KGB and the Union of Soviet Writers, Pasternak reluctantly agreed to decline the Prize. In his resignation letter to the Nobel Committee, Pasternak stated the reaction of the Soviet State was the only reason for his decision. By the time of his death from lung cancer in 1960, the campaign against Pasternak had severely damaged the international credibility of the U.S.S.R. He remains a major figure in Russian literature to this day. Furthermore, tactics pioneered by Pasternak were later continued, expanded, and refined by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and other Soviet dissidents. <b>Early Life</b> Pasternak was born in Moscow on 10 February, (Gregorian), 1890 (Julian 29 January) into a wealthy Russian Jewish family which had been received into the Russian Orthodox Church. -

Griffith Prepared for the Fifth International Conference on World Politics Noordwijk, Netherlands September 13-18, 1965 MuM mrsm - - m- -io m - m THE REVIVAL OF EAST EUROPEAN NATIONALISMS The slow but sure revival of nationalism in Eastern Europe can best be analyzed by considering its two major causes. first, changes in external influences and, second, domestic developments. T The primary external influence in Eastern Europe remains the Soviet Union. One of the resualts of the Second World War was that Eastern Europe fell into the Soviet sphere of influence; and, al- though to a lesser extent, it continues there until this day. At first, under Stalin, Eastern Europe increasingly became something close to a part of the Soviet Union. One of the tasks of his suc- cessors was to begin an imperial readjustment, in which Eastern Europe was the lesser problem; China, we now know, was the major one. Paradoxically, it was largely not in spite of but because of the 1956 Polish October and Hungarian Revolution that by the late nineteen fifties Jrushchev seemed. to be doing quite well in Eastern Europe. (We did not know then what we do now: he was already doing badly with China,) Khrushchev's program of de-Stalinization probably strengthened the Communist regime, at least for the pres- ent, within the Soviet Union, and it to some extent helped the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe. Lez In Varlam Shalamov's story "The Funeral Oration" two political prisoners heaving stone in a Kolyma goldmine compare their lot to that of the Decembrists sent to the Siberian mines more than a century ago. I told Fediakhin about the quotas the Decembrists were assigned at Ner chinsk according to the "Memories of Maria Volkonskaia," - three poods 1 of , ore per worker. - And pow much would our quota weigh, Vasilii Petrovich? - Fediakhin ~~ . I did a calculation - it was about eight hundred poods. - Well, Vasilii Petrovich, look how the quotas have gone up....2 If one was to choose a single quotation that defines Shalamov's manifold rela-: . tionship with Dostoevsky it will probably be this one, the passage where Dosto evsky's name is not even mentioned. And yet it neatly captures the nature of the distance between the House ofthe Dead, Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, and the -Kolyma Tales. The production quotas have been increased 266.666666666(6) times. This radical change in the limits of human experience sets the framework within which Shalamov sees Dostoevsky's philosophical ideas and creative de- vices. : Here I would like to say·that in my opinion the whole scope of Shalamov's Dostoevsky connections cannot be covered within the boundaries of a single arti-. cle or even a series of articles. Therefore the aim of this article is to define several interesting aspects of the problem and tentatively suggest the ways, along which those aspects might be explored. -

The Sealed Train A century later, historians still disagree about what caused the Russian Revolution. By Sophie Pinkham On February 23, 1917, an unseasonably warm day, women at the Vyborg cotton mills in the Russian city of Petrograd (formerly St. Petersburg) marked the recently created International Women’s Day. The meeting became a mass walkout; as the women headed for the Neva River, other people—men and women—joined their ranks. By noon, about 50,000 protesters were participating in a spontaneous strike. The police boarded streetcars, expelling anyone with calloused hands, and blocked the bridges across the frozen river, but the workers walked across the ice. The next day, nearly 75,000 people were on strike. Tsar Nicholas II sent Cossack horsemen to put the rebellion down, but they simply cantered through the crowds without using their swords or whips; they had chosen not to fight the people. Workers flocked into Petrograd for a three-day general strike. Demonstrators in homemade helmets and padded jackets waved red banners demanding an end to Russia’s involvement in the world war. When police arrived, the Cossacks defended the protesters. Revolutionary organizers were convinced that it was time to stop the strikes, believing that such action could never succeed without the support of the army. They were surprised by a mutiny in the elite Pavlovsky Regiment, whose cadets rebelled when they heard that their fellow soldiers had shot civilians. Mutiny in several other regiments ensued, with the mutineers killing their officers. By February 27, an estimated 25,000 garrison troops had defected. -

I will not Reason & Compare: my business is to Create (William Blake) During the 19th century, anarchism has develloped as a result of a social current which aims for freedom and happiness. A number of factors since World War I have made this movement, and its ideas, dissapear little by little under the dust of history. After the classical anarchism of which the Spanish Revolution was one of the last representatives a new kind of resistance was founded in the sixties which claimed to be based (at least partly) on this anarchism. However this resistance is often limited to a few (and even then partly misunderstood) slogans such as Anarchy is order , Property is theft ,... Information about anarchism is often hard to come by, monopolised and intellectual; and therefore visibly disapearing.The anarchive or anarchist archive Anarchy is Order ( in short A.O) is an attempt to make the principles, propositions and discussions of this tradition available again for anyone it concerns. We believe that these texts are part of our own heritage. They don t belong to publishers, institutes or specialists. These texts thus have to be available for all anarchists an other people interested. That is one of the conditions to give anarchism a new impulse, to let the new 2 anarchism outgrow the slogans. This is what makes this project relevant for us: we must find our roots to be able to renew ourselves.
