An excerpt from Coach Will: A Story of Achieving Uncommon Sales Success by Todd Gehrke An Incredible Ride With Bob is my favorite chapter of the book A Story of Achieving Uncommon Sales Success. I think it tells a story that many people live through, finding themselves living in a way that is not in line with who they are. Regardless of your profession, if you feel that what you do is not congruent with who you are, success will be hard to achieve. You are left with a choice: find something else to do, or find out what it is in your current career that does fulfill your purpose.

The last decade has been turbulent in the mortgage industry. Over 70% of the mortgage competition has been swept away during this time of change. For many of the nation’s top producers, the consumers “flight to quality” has created a unique opportunity to grow market share in both purchase and refinance mortgages.

Mortgage Executive Magazine compiled the most comprehensive list of The Nation’s Top 200 Mortgage Originators as ranked by their total yearly mortgage volume. Entries cannot include loan volume of associate originators or junior originators that earn a commission on the same loan files. Mortgage Executive Magazine seeks to recognize and celebrate the service, dedication, and hard work that leading mortgage originators put into serving their clients.

I enjoy the networking dance, and the opportunity, expectations, chances, and wonder that come with it. Maybe you’ll meet a person with whom you can do business, or maybe you’ll meet someone who is destined to become a new friend. Maybe you’ll even meet someone with whom you will form an alliance. And, just maybe, that person will become your business partner in the future.

All it takes is making a few contacts or even one lasting connection. With networking, there are no limits. There are just limitless possibilities.

By definition, networking is “the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions; the cultivation of formative and productive relation- ships for employment or business.”

42 MORTGAGE EXECUTIVE • 2 0 1 8 Networking events often are sponsored by chambers of commerce, professional associations, and even civic and community organizations. They are specifically designed to bring people together in order to advance their business and professional purposes. People attend with the absolute intention of connecting with others with whom they might exchange reciprocal leads in the hope of generating either business or interest in their work. You must remember that the most important aspect about networking is that it is a two-way street. You cannot be there for your own self-interest only, or people will see right through you. To get something, you must be willing to give some- thing in return.

Strategic Alliances Strategic alliances can be extremely important to you, and are reserved for the very special people who you get to know very well over the course of a number of follow-up meetings. The purpose of the strategic alli- ance is for both parties to commit to sending business to each other. Be sure to keep a list of your strategic alliance partners’ contact information in your phone and a typed list on you as well. This will serve as a reminder for you to always think about the fortunate members in your strategic alliances, and it almost guarantees that you will be sending busi- ness their way regularly. Believe me, if they understand how this works, and if they are true, they will keep you in mind and send business your way as well. You should catch up with your strategic partners regularly, not to compare lead counts but simply to stay in tune and to advise one another of any impor- tant updates or new products that will help you better promote each other. If 12 months pass and you have sent five leads to one member, while that person has sent none, it’s definitely time for a meeting or reckon- ing to assess why and whether or not it makes sense to hold on to that partnership. This is not just about being on the receiving end. With a strategic alliance, it is vital to have the right partners because you do have good leads and value to offer, and some reciprocation is only fair. Not one for one, necessarily, but you must know that there is, at least, active consideration and concern on their part.

The Top 1% of Mortgage Originators Delivered Out- standing Results in a Challenging Mortgage Market

Mortgage Executive Magazine compiled the most comprehensive list of The Nation’s Top 1% of Mortgage Originators. The Top 100 Mortgage Originator list debuted in 1995 in Mortgage Originator Magazine. Mortgage Executive Magazine expanded the rankings to include the top 1% of the hundreds of thousands mortgage originators in the U.S in 2011.

The minimum eligibility criteria are a total “personal” production of at least $30 million in 2017. Entries cannot include loan volume of associate originators or junior originators that earn a commission on the same loan files.

Mortgage Executive Magazine seeks to recognize and celebrate the service, dedication, and hard work that leading mortgage professionals put into serving their clients during the home loan process.
