  • Mrs. Sidney Drew
Mrs. Sidney Drew Also Known As: Lucille McVey Drew, Lucille McVey, Jane Morrow Lived: April 18, 1890 - November 3, 1925 Worked as: co-director, co-producer, co-screenwriter, director, film actress, producer, screenwriter, theatre actress Worked In: United States by Casiana Ionita There were two Mrs. Sidney Drews. Both wrote for their husband’s films. The first wife, Gladys Rankin, was a dramatist who wrote under the name of George Cameron. Her play became the scenario for Sidney Drew’s first motion picture The Still Voice (1913). After the death of the first Mrs. Sidney Drew in January 1914, Sidney Drew married Lucille McVey the following July. The second Mrs. Drew, who also used the name Jane Morrow, began her career as a stage actress and then joined Vitagraph in early 1914. That same year she was part of Sidney Drew’s company of players. Sidney Drew was already established as an urbane and irreverent comedy actor-director, whose work is perhaps epitomized in the semi-scandalous race and gender-bending The Florida Enchantment (1914), which he directed at Vitagraph. The Drews (Lucille and Sidney) created their own style of domestic comedies, playing an on-screen couple, Polly and Henry, the woman towering over the man, poking fun at middle-class married life. Unlike the bawdy female partners played by Mabel Normand, Marie Dressler, and Alice Howell to make working-class couples look stupid, Mrs. Drew’s haughty matron helped to make middle-class couples look ridiculous. The extant Nothing to Wear (1917), for instance, is based on the premise that a woman with some money has entirely too much to wear, and her protest that she has “nothing to wear,” produces the inevitable exercise in comic futility for the brow-beaten husband seeking to please.

https://archive.org/details/bigpicturemoneyp00epst/page/14 So there’s not a whole lot on the notes front for this episode because I didn’t have a ton of time to write anything out but I have been reading through Wikipedia pages for a couple days and wrote a little bit. This one is going to be about the history of Hollywood or, more specifically, the history of major motion picture production companies. Also just for the record, or more just to tell you, for the vinyl episode and my future episode about the music industry Ehtisham and I alluded to I kind of set up the background information and then I’m going to bring it forward into today, but with this episode and its future companion episode I intend to do the opposite. In the film industry there is what are known as ‘The Big 5’ companies, (for the record depending on who you ask and what time period you are working in this could be the Big 4-6 so it gets tricky) these are the ones that produce an absolutely massive amount of the media we consume. According to Wikipedia this means companies that make 80-85% of the box office revenue made in the country. This concept is not too recent however, as the Big 5 as we know them today are the second iteration of the group. The original Big 5 were: MGM, Paramount, Fox, Warner Bros., and RKO. The current Big 5 are: Universal, Paramount, Warner Bros., Disney, and Columbia. I plan on just kinda going through the old Big 5 and then the new Big 5 one by one, following their beginning and rise and/or demise.

  • Mary Murillo
Mary Murillo Also Known As: Mary O’Connor, Mary Velle Lived: January 22, 1888 - February 4, 1944 Worked as: adapter, film company managing director, scenario writer, screenwriter, theatre actress Worked In: France, United Kingdom: England, United States by Christina Petersen In March 1918, Moving Picture World heralded British screenwriter Mary Murillo as a “remarkable example” of “the meteoric flights to fame and fortune which have marked the careers of many present day leaders in the motion picture profession” (1525). This was more than just promotional hyperbole, since, in just four years, Murillo had penned over thirty features, including a highly successful adaptation of East Lynne (1916) starring Theda Bara and the original story for Cheating the Public (1918), “which proved a sensation” at its New York debut according to Moving Picture World (1525). Murillo wrote or adapted over fifty films from 1913 to 1934 in the United States, England, and France, including slapstick comedies, melodramas, fairy tale adaptations, and vehicles for female stars such as Bara, Ethel Barrymore, Clara Kimball Young, Olga Petrova, and Norma Talmadge. As a scenarist, her range included several films focused on contemporary issues—gender equality, women’s suffrage, economic progressivism, and labor reform—while others, such as the child-oriented adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk (1917), seem to have been meant to appeal as pure escapism. In the latter half of her career, Murillo left the United States for England where she joined several ventures, but never equaled her American output. Born in January 1888 and educated at the Sacred Heart Convent in Roehampton, England, Murillo immigrated to the United States in 1908 at the age of nineteen (“Mary Murillo, Script Writer” 1525; McKernan 2015, 80).

Hollywood was producing these three different classes of feature films by means of three different types of producers. The Suburbs. Skip to main content. Further information: Sundance Institute. In , the same year that United Artists, bought out by MGM, ceased to exist as a venue for independent filmmakers, Sterling Van Wagenen left the film festival to help found the Sundance Institute with Robert Redford. While the kinds of films produced by Poverty Row studios only grew in popularity, they would eventually become increasingly available both from major production companies and from independent producers who no longer needed to rely on a studio's ability to package and release their work. Yannis Tzioumakis. Seeing Lynch as a fellow studio convert, George Lucas , a fan of Eraserhead and now the darling of the studios, offered Lynch the opportunity to direct his next Star Wars sequel, Return of the Jedi Rick marked it as to-read Jan 05, This change would further widen the divide between commercial and non-commercial films. Until his so-called "retirement" as a director in he continued to produce films even after this date he would produce up to seven movies a year, matching and often exceeding the five-per-year schedule that the executives at United Artists had once thought impossible. Very few of these filmmakers ever independently financed or independently released a film of their own, or ever worked on an independently financed production during the height of the generation's influence.

  • Mark Burnett Named President of MGM Television, Digital Group
Mark Burnett Named President of MGM Television, Digital Group 12.14.2015 Mark Burnett-executive producer of such hit shows as NBC's The Voice, CBS' Survivor and ABC's Shark Tank-has been named president of MGM Television and Digital Group, the company said Monday. He'll start his new job early next year and has a five-year contract. Burnett's appointment comes as part of an overall acquisition of United Artists Media Group, an entity that's jointly held by Hearst, Burnett and his wife, Roma Downey. Some 15 months ago, MGM took a 55% stake in the production company owned by Hearst, Burnett and Downey, and at that time revived the United Artists banner with Burnett serving as CEO. Downey will remain president of the faith and family unit, LightWorkers Media. Burnett and Downey together have produced such TV miniseries as History's The Bible and NBC's follow-up, The Bible AD. To acquire United Artists, MGM bought the remaining 45 percent stake in the company. Burnett and Downey will exchange their joint 23 percent interest in UAMG for 1.34 million shares of MGM stock, valued at $90 per share. Hearst will receive $113.5 million for its 22 percent interest in UAMG. Hearst, Burnett, Downey and MGM will separately go ahead with a planned over-the-top channel, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Downey will serve as chief content officer of that operation, reports Variety. Roma Khanna, who had headed the division, is departing. Burnett, who's used to being an independent producer in charge of his own company, will report directly to Gary Barber, chairman and CEO of MGM.
