In this article, I explore the relationship between larp and its representation within the medium of documentary/non-!ction !lm, paying particular attention to tropes that build sympathy with the viewer. A"er explaining certain aporias of larp !lm representation, I look into the history of this representation in !lm and classify distinct sub-genres of LARP !lmmaking. Murray Smith’s (see 1995) “structures of sympathy” apparatus is then employed to demonstrate how Delirium: #e Second State of Will (dir. Viij Nissinen, 2010) and Darkon (dir. • Live Action Role-Playing: Transcending the Magic Circle Through Play in Dagorhir
International Journal of Role-Playing - Issue 10 Live Action Role-Playing: Transcending the Magic Circle through Play in Dagorhir Abstract: Individuals interact with one another and develop themselves in accordance with these interactions. One group within this complex system is live action role-players (larpers). Larps are a variant of play that combine the “role-playing” of games, such as Dungeons & Dragons, with the “live action” aspects of sports. Using symbolic interactionism as its para- digmatic orientation, this study examines how the magic circle is reinforced and challenged through the development of in- game characters and their effect on the out-of-game self. The respondents of this ethnography participate in a larp called Da- gorhir (1977-), which puts an emphasis on live action combat rather than role-play. Participants are part of the Las Vegas realm of Dagorhir, Barad’Dun. Players view Dagorhir as a full contact sport mixed with martial arts; role-playing and charac- ter development is encouraged, but not necessary. I observed, interviewed, and participated with this group over the period of six months. Even in a combat-oriented larp like Dagorhir, players get to choose names, weapons, clothing, fighting techniques, and other ways to develop their in-game characters; this ability establishes a connection between leisure larps and edu-larps. The themes that emerged from coding show different aspects of self and social interactions that are affected through in-game character development: Larp Segregation, Reflection of Self, Critique of Self, and Evolution of Self. Players develop terms to label each other and other larpers, as well as create different social networks to further bonding within play.

FOAM FIGHTING: TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE by David Wichinsky A Thesis Submitted to the faculty of The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Masters of Fine Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, FL May 2016 Copyright 2016 David Wichinsky ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The author wishes to express sincere gratitude to his committee members for all of their guidance and support, and special thanks to my advisor for his patience, persistence, and encouragement during the writing of this manuscript and production of this project. The author is grateful to the Dagorhir and other foam-fighting communities for their warmness in allowing me to pursue research into this niche sport. iv ABSTRACT Author: David Wichinsky Title: Foam Fighting: Technology and Culture Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Shane Eason, M.F.A Degree: Masters of Fine Arts Year: 2016 Foam fighting is a form of Live Action Role Playing (LARP) that focuses on mock combat and recreational battle, with role-playing aspects taking a less prominent role. It is sometimes referred to as a “poor man’s martial art”. While there does not appear to be any clear documentation concerning the origins, research on foam fighting suggests the sport began in Maryland in the 1970’s and slowly spread throughout the United States. This research will illustrate how the sport of foam fighting demands a level of critical thinking that takes both the participant and audience beyond the sight of a swinging stick. I plan to show how this sport provides an outlet for high levels of creativity, social interaction and strategic planning skills.
