Do People Who are More Aggressive Sustain More Injuries Than Their Less Aggressive Counterparts: A Study of Participants of Medieval Combat Games in the United States? Abstract Today people are being encouraged to be more active for the sake of their health, but in becoming more active people are getting more sports related injuries. There are many risk factors that may increase the likelihood of a sports related injury. Aggression in particular may be contributing factor to a higher likelihood of injury. The goal of this study is to look at the relationship between aggressive personalities

  • Live Action Role-Playing: Transcending the Magic Circle Through Play in Dagorhir
International Journal of Role-Playing - Issue 10 Live Action Role-Playing: Transcending the Magic Circle through Play in Dagorhir Abstract: Individuals interact with one another and develop themselves in accordance with these interactions. One group within this complex system is live action role-players (larpers). Larps are a variant of play that combine the “role-playing” of games, such as Dungeons & Dragons, with the “live action” aspects of sports. Using symbolic interactionism as its para- digmatic orientation, this study examines how the magic circle is reinforced and challenged through the development of in- game characters and their effect on the out-of-game self. The respondents of this ethnography participate in a larp called Da- gorhir (1977-), which puts an emphasis on live action combat rather than role-play. Participants are part of the Las Vegas realm of Dagorhir, Barad’Dun. Players view Dagorhir as a full contact sport mixed with martial arts; role-playing and charac- ter development is encouraged, but not necessary. I observed, interviewed, and participated with this group over the period of six months. Even in a combat-oriented larp like Dagorhir, players get to choose names, weapons, clothing, fighting techniques, and other ways to develop their in-game characters; this ability establishes a connection between leisure larps and edu-larps. The themes that emerged from coding show different aspects of self and social interactions that are affected through in-game character development: Larp Segregation, Reflection of Self, Critique of Self, and Evolution of Self. Players develop terms to label each other and other larpers, as well as create different social networks to further bonding within play.

Schmidt College of Arts and Letters in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Masters of Fine Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, FL May 2016 Copyright 2016 David Wichinsky ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The author wishes to express sincere gratitude to his committee members for all of their guidance and support, and special thanks to my advisor for his patience, persistence, and encouragement during the writing of this manuscript and production of this project. The author is grateful to the Dagorhir and other foam-fighting communities for their warmness in allowing me to pursue research into this niche sport. iv ABSTRACT Author: David Wichinsky Title: Foam Fighting: Technology and Culture Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Shane Eason, M.F.A Degree: Masters of Fine Arts Year: 2016 Foam fighting is a form of Live Action Role Playing (LARP) that focuses on mock combat and recreational battle, with role-playing aspects taking a less prominent role. It is sometimes referred to as a “poor man’s martial art”. While there does not appear to be any clear documentation concerning the origins, research on foam fighting suggests the sport began in Maryland in the 1970’s and slowly spread throughout the United States. This research will illustrate how the sport of foam fighting demands a level of critical thinking that takes both the participant and audience beyond the sight of a swinging stick. I plan to show how this sport provides an outlet for high levels of creativity, social interaction and strategic planning skills.

  • Fantasy Role-Playing Games
Beyond The Magic Circle Marinka Copier 1 Fantasy Role-Play: Code and Culture 36 Fantasy Role-Play: Code and Culture “Why do World of Warcraft players call monsters ‘mobs’?” inquired Richard Bartle during a lecture at the Waag Society in Amsterdam.8 “Because when I added monsters to MUD, I called them mobiles (for ‘mobile objects’).” Bartle is the co-designer of the first Multi User Dungeon (MUD1), the textual predecessor of online role-playing games (MMORPGs). During his talk he traced the history of World of Warcraft (WoW) back to MUD1 (1978), arguing how the code, design, and culture of MMORPGs is always directly or indirectly inherited from its parent virtual world. Bartle concluded by explaining that “be- cause there were no virtual worlds before MUD1” he and his co-designer Roy Trubshaw were inspired by the possibilities of networked computer technology and the pen-and-paper Fantasy role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons (D&D, 1974). At the time in the mid-1970s they were computer pro- gramming students at Essex University in England. In other words, WoW did not appear and develop in an historical vacuum, its “code and culture” is simply the latest incarnation of Fantasy role-play. The aim of this chapter is to provide an under- standing of MMORPGs in the context of previ- ous computer-mediated and analogue Fantasy role-playing games. I believe that the contested relationship between instrumental play and role-play in WoW can be traced back through- out the code and culture of these games. Furthermore, I show that the code and culture of Fantasy role-play came into being in the context of what sociologist Manuel Castells called the network society; a shift from hierarchies to networks in all sectors of society from the 1960s onwards.
