!e !eory and Practice of Larp in Non-Fiction Film Evan Torner Keywords Aesthetics, Documentary, Film, Larp, Narrative, Role-playing Documentaries recording the participatory art form of live-action role-playing (larp) for posterity have recently come into their own. In this article, I explore the relationship between larp and its representation within the medium of documentary/non-!ction !lm, paying particular attention to tropes that build sympathy with the viewer. A"er explaining certain aporias of larp !lm representation, I look into the history of this representation in !lm and classify distinct sub-genres of LARP !lmmaking. Murray Smith’s (see 1995) “structures of sympathy” apparatus is then employed to demonstrate how Delirium: #e Second State of Will (dir. Viij Nissinen, 2010) and Darkon (dir. Andrew Neel, Luke Meyer, 2006) responsibly deal with the core tensions suggested while attending to the tropes of their respective sub-genres. #e article ends with a notion of a possible comparative larp non-!ction sub-genre that may prove the most useful in providing a clearer portrait of the hobby’s internal dynamics. The author is grateful to the Dagorhir and other foam-fighting communities for their warmness in allowing me to pursue research into this niche sport. iv ABSTRACT Author: David Wichinsky Title: Foam Fighting: Technology and Culture Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Shane Eason, M.F.A Degree: Masters of Fine Arts Year: 2016 Foam fighting is a form of Live Action Role Playing (LARP) that focuses on mock combat and recreational battle, with role-playing aspects taking a less prominent role. It is sometimes referred to as a “poor man’s martial art”. While there does not appear to be any clear documentation concerning the origins, research on foam fighting suggests the sport began in Maryland in the 1970’s and slowly spread throughout the United States. This research will illustrate how the sport of foam fighting demands a level of critical thinking that takes both the participant and audience beyond the sight of a swinging stick. I plan to show how this sport provides an outlet for high levels of creativity, social interaction and strategic planning skills. -

Beyond The Magic Circle Marinka Copier 1 Fantasy Role-Play: Code and Culture 36 Fantasy Role-Play: Code and Culture “Why do World of Warcraft players call monsters ‘mobs’?” inquired Richard Bartle during a lecture at the Waag Society in Amsterdam.8 “Because when I added monsters to MUD, I called them mobiles (for ‘mobile objects’).” Bartle is the co-designer of the first Multi User Dungeon (MUD1), the textual predecessor of online role-playing games (MMORPGs). During his talk he traced the history of World of Warcraft (WoW) back to MUD1 (1978), arguing how the code, design, and culture of MMORPGs is always directly or indirectly inherited from its parent virtual world. Bartle concluded by explaining that “be- cause there were no virtual worlds before MUD1” he and his co-designer Roy Trubshaw were inspired by the possibilities of networked computer technology and the pen-and-paper Fantasy role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons (D&D, 1974). At the time in the mid-1970s they were computer pro- gramming students at Essex University in England. In other words, WoW did not appear and develop in an historical vacuum, its “code and culture” is simply the latest incarnation of Fantasy role-play. The aim of this chapter is to provide an under- standing of MMORPGs in the context of previ- ous computer-mediated and analogue Fantasy role-playing games. I believe that the contested relationship between instrumental play and role-play in WoW can be traced back through- out the code and culture of these games. Furthermore, I show that the code and culture of Fantasy role-play came into being in the context of what sociologist Manuel Castells called the network society; a shift from hierarchies to networks in all sectors of society from the 1960s onwards.
