STATESVILLE , N.C. (May 6, 2013) – Front Row Motorsports earned its fi rst NASCAR victory Sunday night at Talladega (Ala.) Su- perspeedway when David Gilliland pushed teammate David Ragan to the checkers in a dramatic last-lap surge to cap off a wild and rain-interrupted race. Ragan earned Bob Jenkins’ young team its fi rst Sprint Cup Series win and Gilliland fi nished second for the best – and most dramatic – fi nish in team history.

The ending came in the form of a green-white-checkered fi nish, in which Ragan and Gilliland restarted in 10th and 11th respectively. In two laps, the pair freight-trained through the traffi c in their Roush Yates-powered Ford Fusions to emerge at the front of the pack – seemingly out of nowhere and to the surprise and delight of the rain- soaked crowd.

The win is the second Sprint Cup victory for Ragan, and the runner- up fi nish ties Gilliland’s best career result. The milestone event put partners Farm Rich (No. 34) and Love’s Travel Stops (No. 38) in the spotlight in their fi rst season working with Front Row Motorsports.

“This is a true David vs. Goliath moment here,” Ragan said. “This is special to get Front Row Motorsports their fi rst win. It feels like I’ve never been in Victory Lane before, I’m so excited. We’re a small team. We build our own chassis, our own bodies, and it’s such a special mo- ment for our team and all of our partners. This is big.”

Parents We’re also preparing for Imperial Session in July, and International Shrine Awareness Day, which is June 6. We ask that you put some energy and creativity into honoring the founding day of the fraternity – use the materials and websites available to you – and think of ways to showcase your temple, and your personal involvement and commit- ment to Shriners International. 7th Annual We are all aware of the importance of increasing mem- bership, and we have all been asked to make member- ship our number one priority. Certainly, efforts need to increase at both the national and temple levels, but indi- vidual efforts are equally important. International Shrine Awareness Day might just be the perfect day to renew those individual commitments to put the fraternity and philanthropy at the top of your priority list. What would happen if each of you truly made a concerted, ongoing effort to share your story of why you became a Shriner and why this organization means so much to you and your family? Of course we also need to reach out to our lapsed, inactive brothers, listen to their concerns, rekindle their interest and bring them back in. We are all ambassadors and each one of us must be committed to sharing the story of our great fraternity and philanthropy.

Just as membership numbers are a priority, so is “speak- ing with one voice” and recognizing the strength of a sin- gle, unifi ed organization. We talk a lot about being a single system of health care, but too often the confusing variety of everything from taglines to boilerplates to websites that can be found without any effort at all says otherwise, and weakens both our organization and our message. As we prepare for the upcoming public relations seminar, it’s a good time to remember we all have the same goal – a strong health care system that is recognized, remembered and relied on by the public. To get there, we need to work together.

Telling the stories and history of both our great fraternity and our amazing philanthropy whenever and wherever you can, and speaking with a single, positive and unifi ed voice will increase the chance of attracting new nobles to our ranks, new donors to our cause and new patients to our hospitals.

There is much work to do, so let’s have some fun and get to it.

In 2008, Blue Ridge Shrine Club member Todd Trivette came up with an idea for a unique fund raiser. Having a love for riding motorcycles, he started the Mara- thon 4 Miracles Charity Ride. While most riding enthusiasts are familiar with the poker runs you see all the time, this event was created to be a bit more, shall we say, challenging.

The premise was simple. Ride a route encompassing over 1,000 miles and do it in less than 24 hours. Donors were solicited before the ride to make contributions and that fi rst year over $3,700 was raised!

The fi rst year Trivette and Noble Lyman Williams were the riders and endured terrible weather but because of the strong outpouring of support from the do- nors it was decided to make this an annual event.

In 2009 Noble Brent Higgins joined Trivette and Williams in the fun and the trio have to date, through the kindness and generosity of donors, raised over $42,000.

The 6th annual ride is scheduled for June 23rd and donations are being sought ASIS HRINE ALENDAR now. Robbinsville SHRINE CLUB

This last year for the Robbinsville Shrine Club was terrifi c. We felt the need to inform our broth- ers throughout the state of some of the unique achievements and acts of generosity by our members and ladies that took place in 2012. The hard work of many helped our club donate over $20,000.00 to the Shriners Children’s Hospital.

One couple that deserves to be recognized for their great work is Billy and Sue Clark. They are the proprietors of Smokey Mountain Amuse- ments and have supported the hospital with their carnival and their donations for over twenty years. Through their generosity directly we have donated over $7,000.00 to the hospital including checks totaling $3,100.00 in 2012.

Martin and Christine Oehler have also been spe- cial to us. They have been a big part of our an- nual Bar-B-Q for twenty years at the Robbinsville Shrine Club and are known to the attendees to serve the best baked beans around. The event was founded to honor the memory of Chris’ fa- ther Floyd Crisp. They have also generously sup- ported the hospitals with donations as well as a rifl e raffl e in 2012.

All of our members and ladies are so important to our shrine club and we appreciate their hard work. These are just two of the many exam- ples of our wonderful members who helped us achieve success.

Sincerely, OW Hooper Jr. Treasurer, Robbinsville Shrine Club PAGE 22 JUNE 2013 DESERT DUST S Memorials S S Holland’s Hope S
